Welcome to Yom Kippur!

Yom Kippur (/ˌjɒm kɪˈpʊər, ˌjɔːm ˈkɪpər, ˌjoʊm-/;[2] Hebrew: יוֹם כִּיפּוּר‬, IPA: [ˈjom kiˈpuʁ], or יום הכיפורים‬), also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism.[3] Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with an approximate 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services.

Orange Watch: Syracuse should schedule these teams before Jim Boeheim retires - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: In less than a week, the Syracuse basketball team begins pre-season practice, minus an injured Frank Howard early on, for a highly anticipated season. It also marks the beginning of the final stages of Jim Boeheim’s Hall of Fame career as he now coaches his sharp-shooting son Buddy Boeheim (donning jersey No. 35 to honor his Dad) for likely the next four seasons through the 2021-22 campaign.

The college basketball season keeps starting earlier and earlier with preseason practice for the Orange getting underway Sept. 25, the first exhibition game one month later on Oct. 25, and the season opener against Eastern Washington on the earliest opening date – Nov. 6.

We certainly acknowledge that the coaching staff and athletic department have the non-conference portion of the basketball schedule down pat to go along with 18, and soon to be 20 conference games with the launch of the linear ACC Network in less than a year.

Mixing in an early season tournament of some sort, an appearance at Madison Square Garden against a “name” program or two, the Big Ten challenge series, and other home games for financial reasons against a myriad of programs with various power rankings among the now 353 Div. I programs, SU annually puts itself in a position to have its won/loss record stacked up with strength of schedule to give itself a best shot at annual NCAA Tournament berths.

With the upcoming tougher road through the ACC and two less non-league games, the last thing Coach Boeheim would likely want to entertain over his last three seasons is adding a tough non-ACC matchup at the Dome, but that is exactly what we are proposing as a way to “honor” his unbelievable run as one of the best-ever coaches in college basketball.

Among the top 21 all-time most victorious Div. I programs, there are only seven teams that have not been the ‘Cuse opponent in a Dome game coached by Boeheim, topped by the obvious team we want to finally see play on campus – Kansas, second to Kentucky on the most wins list.

The other six are Brigham Young, Utah, Illinois, Texas, and Western Kentucky, obvious winning programs but lacking glamour names to Syracuse fans (despite the 2003 Final Four win over the Longhorns), and the other obvious choice for a Dome date – Washington and Mike Hopkins, number 21 on the all-time wins list.

So we’re proposing a home-and-home series in this order; BYU, Utah, or Texas in 2019, Kansas in 2020, and Washington and Mike Hopkins in 2021, with the return road games staggered to be absorbed by both Boeheim and his successor.

Miami Basketball schedule will benefit team in transition (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The 2018-19 Miami basketball team is one in transition. They will have a few new key players in the rotation. The schedule this season benefits a good start at the beginning of the non-conference and ACC schedule.

Bruce Brown, Ja’Quan Newton and Lonnie Walker will be replaced by Zach Johnson, Miles Wilson and Anthony Mack. The Miami basketball team also returns key players Dewan Huell, Chris Lykes, and Anthony Lawrence. Those three are the Hurricanes only returning starters

The ACC announced the conference schedule last week. The Miami basketball team began their ACC Schedule with road games at Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech last season. That created a month away from the Watsco Center. This season Miami will be home for over a month.

After playing a road game at Pennsylvania December 4 the Hurricanes don’t play away from home until they play at Louisville on January 6. That is followed by a trip to Tallahassee to play Florida State. The Hurricanes then play four of their next five at home. That will give Jim Larranaga and his staff nearly two months of practice time.

Although the Hurricanes didn’t sign any players out of high school the transfers that will play this season give Miami experience in big games. Both Johnson and Wilson played in the NCAA Tournament at their former schools.

Chris Mack Has The 4th Best Recruiting Class In College Basketball - The Cardinal Connect (thecardinalconnect.com; Kurtz)

Re-recruiting the roster he inherited and adding a few pieces for his debut season was priority number one for Chris Mack. Once that was taken care of, the entire staff went all in on assembling their 2019 recruiting class.

With three commitments from recruits ranked in the top 100, 247Sports.com ranks Louisville’s 2019 class as the fourth best in the country.

I’m sure we’ll see programs like Kentucky, Duke and Kansas ranked towards the top once elite recruits make their decision. With that said, with three top 100 commits and the potential to add a few more, Louisville’s class will certainly be ranked much higher than most expected.

Show-cause ruling concerns Pac-12 commish (espn; Bonagura)

In response to a California judge's tentative ruling that show-cause order provisions in the NCAA bylaws violate California law, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott filed a written declaration stating his belief that the ruling "would threaten the NCAA membership of the Pac-12's California schools."

He based that belief on the premise that all NCAA member schools must compete on a level playing field, as laid out by the NCAA Division I Manual, which includes compliance with show-cause provisions.

"If California law prevents institutions in that state from honoring such commitments, it is hard to see how the Pac-12's Member Universities in California could continue to meet the requirements of NCAA membership," Scott wrote.

Scott's declaration was included as part of the NCAA's response to Judge Frederick Shaller's ruling that came last month as part of former USC assistant football coach Todd McNair's civil lawsuit vs. the NCAA. In May, a jury in Los Angeles voted 9-3 in favor of the NCAA following a three-week defamation trial stemming from McNair's involvement in the Reggie Bush extra-benefits scandal.

In 2010, the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions issued a report that concluded McNair "knew or should have known" that Bush was engaged in violations with a would-be agent while playing for USC and McNair "provided false and misleading information to the enforcement staff."

America's last flatware maker: Trump tariffs on China boost Upstate NY firm (PS; Weiner)

President Donald Trump's new tariffs on Chinese imports could fuel record growth at a Central New York factory that has become America's last maker of stainless steel flatware, the company's co-founder said Tuesday.

"It could be a game changer," said Greg Owens, CEO of Sherrill Manufacturing in Oneida County. "Certainly, a 10 percent tariff will have everyone's attention."

Trump on Monday night announced the U.S. would impose tariffs on an additional $200 billion in Chinese imports, affecting consumer products from air conditioners to forks and knives.

The 10 percent tariff, effective Sept. 24, will increase to 25 percent in the new year, Trump administration officials said.

A 194-page list of items subject to the tariff includes sets of Chinese-made stainless-steel flatware and higher-grade stainless-steel forks that have some nickel content.

More than 70 percent of flatware imports to the United States come from China, Owens said, increasing chances that some producers will look to bring manufacturing back to the United States.

This is not an insignificant issue. At all. This could cause major dominoes to fall.
