Welcome to National Apple Betty Day!

An apple betty—or apple brown betty—is similar to an apple pie, but has buttered and sweetened crumbs instead of a crust. Bettys may also be made with other fruits such as berries or pears, and their main seasonings are sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. They are often topped with a lemon sauce or whipped cream. The apple betty is American as apple pie, having been eaten during colonial times, mentioned in print in 1864, and eaten by Ronald and Nancy Reagan while they were in the White House—being one of their favorite desserts.

National Apple Betty Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on October 5th.

SU News

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball program already received news on the recruiting front this week when 2019 big man John Bol Ajak announced his commitment to SU. But last night, Quincy Guerrier trimmed his recruitment down to three schools and Syracuse made the cut along with Oregon and Illinois. Guerrier is a 6-foot-7 wing out of Thetford Academy in Quebec. He visited Oregon in the beginning of September and will take another official to Illinois this upcoming weekend.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange are a top 15 team according to Athlon Sports (itlh.com; Patrick)

Athlon Sports is the latest publication to include the Syracuse basketball team in their preseason rankings for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

There is not much time left to wait until the Syracuse basketball team kicks off their 2018-19 season. The Orange will play their first of two exhibition games on October 25 and then begin their regular season at home against Eastern Washington on November 6.

By that time, everyone will know what Syracuse’s official ranking will be both in the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll. But for now, predictions have to be made based on preseason rankings from a number of different publications.

The Orange have already been included in preseason rankings from CBS, ESPN, and the Sporting News among others. And now Athlon Sports is the latest to come out with their own preseason top 25 poll for the upcoming 2018-19 college basketball season.

Released on Tuesday, Syracuse comes in at No. 14 in Athlon’s preseason rankings. The Orange are one of five teams from the ACC in the top 15 which also includes Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

The ranking from Athlon is actually one of the highest for Syracuse so far this year. Cleary the Orange’s experienced roster and legendary head coach was enough for Athlon to regard the school as one of the best in the nation heading into the season.

As for when the first official college basketball polls will be released, expect the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll for Week 1 to be revealed by the end of October.

The Adidas Trial Turns Emotional (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

A human element was injected into the first Adidas trial on Thursday as Brian Bowens father, Brian Sr., testified under immunity about the family’s experiences with young Brian’s development and recruitment.

Oklahoma State came up, not for the first time of course, but it is the first time we can recall anyone mentioning Texas, which Bowen alleged offered housing. We think Creighton has come up previously (it’s getting hard to keep up) and allegedly offered upwards of $100,000 and find him a good job.

Bowen Sr. discussed several times when either grassroots sources or college coaches (all assistants unless we missed something) made offers and to us, that’s significant.

Our presumption up to this point has been that any head coach would have been aware if an assistant was spending tons of money for recruits and furthermore, where would the money come from? Surely they’re not spending their own money.

We wondered out loud specifically about Louisville where assistant Andre McGee spent thousands on escorts.
