Welcome to Giving Tuesday!

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable giving season. Coming just after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it was created in part as a response to the commercialism and consumerism of those days. It was started in 2012 at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that has focused on values such as service and giving since its founding in 1874. The Belfer Center partnered with the United Nations Foundation in the days' creation. The day has been sustained by the founders, as well as a team of influencers, including CEOs from various companies, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has provided leadership support. On the day, a diverse group of individuals and organizations—nonprofit, civic, business, and corporate—celebrate by donating and giving their time, talents, and resources. Thousands of organizations now participate in the day worldwide, in almost 100 countries.

Is Syracuse basketball's game at Ohio State already a must-win for NCAA resume? PS; Waters)

The season is still young, but Syracuse faces a must-win game at Ohio State on Wednesday.

That might seem like an overstatement. After all, Syracuse is scheduled to play 31 regular-season games and Wednesday's tilt at Ohio State is just the sixth of the year for the Orange.

But history and Syracuse's 3-2 record, which includes a glaring 0-for-2 trip to New York York in the 2K Classic, tells a harsh truth. And that is that, even though it's still November, Syracuse has put itself in a precarious position.

Should Syracuse lose to the 16th-ranked Buckeyes, the Orange would have three non-conference losses on its resume.

Syracuse has suffered three non-conference losses just six times in the last 27 years. In five of those years, Syracuse didn't go to the NCAA tournament.

Syracuse went to the NIT in 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2017. In 2015, Syracuse lost four non-conference games before the school imposed a postseason ban in response to NCAA violations. The Orange finished the regular season with an 18-13 record, which would have made an NCAA bid unlikely.

Shooting struggles holding Syracuse back early in the season (DO; DiSturco)

With all five starters returning from a Sweet 16-run, Syracuse’s offense was expected to improve.

Tyus Battle worked on his jumper this past summer with NBA skills coach Drew Hanlen. Oshae Brissett and SU assistant coach Adrian Autry Sr. fine-tuned the former’s 3-point shot. The Orange even added sharpshooting transfer Elijah Hughes and freshman guard Buddy Boeheim, who’s shot was compared toKlay Thompson’s by SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara.

Yet five games into the season, Syracuse’s field-goal and 3-point percentage has decreased from 2017. The Orange (3-2) has fallen out of the Top 25 after back-to-back losses at Madison Square Garden, a byproduct of the offensive struggles. Despite a blowout win over Colgate last week, when SU shot over 50 percent from the field and 3 in the second half, there’s still a clear need for shot improvement

“It’s not what we can do,” SU head coach Jim Boeheim said on Nov. 21 after defeating Colgate. “I think we can do better. Hopefully it will come”

Syracuse men’s basketball preview: What to know about No. 16 Ohio State (DO; Gutierrez)

The only true road game of Syracuse’s nonconference slate comes Wednesday night at Value Center Arena in Columbus, Ohio, where the unranked-Orange face No. 16 Ohio State. The Buckeyes enter the game undefeated at 6-0, handling their early season tune-ups with relative ease before their first legitimate challenge in Syracuse, which will have had a full week of rest following a blowout victory over Colgate. Rested and reloaded, Syracuse should offer on Wednesday a clear indicator of where it stands after the first month of the season.

Here’s what you need to know about the matchup, part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

All-time series: Ohio State leads, 5-2

Last time they played: On March 24, 2012 in the Elite Eight, Syracuse lost to OSU, 77-70. Point guard Brandon Triche scored 15 points for the Orange, who were also led by Scoop Jardine, Rakeem Christmas, CJ Fair and Kris Joseph. Jared Sullinger had a game-high 19 points for OSU.

The teams first met in 1911, but they didn’t play again until the Jim Boeheim era was underway, in 1982. Their last two games came in the 2007 and 2012 NCAA Tournaments, both Ohio State wins. SU hasn’t won since Nov. 24, 2000, when Deshaun Williams scored 24 points.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange heads to Ohio State on Wednesday (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad is set for its first true road tilt of the 2018-19 campaign, as the ‘Cuse travels to nationally ranked Ohio State this week.

The SU hoops outfit is back in action after an extended Thanksgiving holiday break.

Last Wednesday, Syracuse (3-2) finally got its offense going in the second half of a 21-point win versus Colgate inside the Carrier Dome. Equally as important, the Orange saw the much-anticipated return of senior point guard Frank Howard.

ACC Roundup - A Split In Day One Of The ACC-Big Ten Challenge (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Opening night of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge went exactly opposite the way we expected (big surprise) as Nebraska took Clemson, barely, and Boston College beat Minnesota handily.

What the hell got into Nic Popovic?

He’s been a promising player who has never quite got there. Well he pretty well got there in the second half, shooting 9-9 and finishing with 18 points.

If you’d bet someone that Popovic would have outscored Ky Bowman, you could have done a lot of money, but no one other than his mother or girlfriend would have made that bet.

He was really good for BC.

Bowman finished just 3-13 for 12 points but he did grab 12 boards and that’s pretty good for anyone 6-1.

He also had one eye popping dunk that will have NBA scouts shaking their heads.

We thought, given BC’s weak bench support so far, that the starting Eagles would wear down and little Ricky, aka Richard Pitino, would do the family thing and run them into the ground.

At the end though, BC got some reasonable bench help and actually looked fresher and certainly better coached.

Snow, high winds could make travel tough in Central NY; alert issued (PS; Coin)

Heavy snow and high winds could make driving difficult today and Wednesday in Central New York.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Cayuga, Madison, Onondaga and Oneida counties from 3 p.m. today through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the weather service said. "Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact commutes this evening and Wednesday morning."

Five to eight inches of snow could fall, and winds could gust as high as 35 mph.

A mix of rain and snow will fall this morning, and some wet snow is already accumulating on hills and to the south and east of Syracuse, where temperatures are a few degrees lower. As temperatures drop this afternoon, snow will start accumulating across Central New York. The heaviest snow will fall tonight through Wednesday morning, with snow still blowing around through the day Wednesday.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for Western New York and the North Country, which will get more lake effect snow as west winds blow across lakes Erie and Ontario. Up to 20 inches of snow is possible in the southwest corner of the state.
