Welcome to National Bagel Day!

National Bagel Day is devoted to bagels, and bakeries and stores often offer discounted or free bagels on the day. It is unknown exactly how bagels got their start. One story says they were invented in Krakow, Poland, where they appeared in the city's community regulations in 1610. This account says they were given as gifts to women in childbirth. Another story says a Viennese baker created bagels to commemorate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. This account says the bread was formed into the shape of a "buegel"—or stirrup—because the liberated Austrians had clung to the king's stirrups as he had ridden past.

Bagels became a part of the Polish diet, and then part of the Slavic diet in general. By the mid-nineteenth century, they could be found in London, and they were first mentioned in English print, in 1892, as "beuglich." They likely found their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland, and were eaten by them especially during Sunday breakfasts. They were first mentioned in American print as "bagels" in 1916. The production and sale of bagels became significant in New York City.

Syracuse basketball defeats No. 1 Duke 95-91: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

Down Goes Duke

If you had the Syracuse University men's basketball team splitting a two-game set with Georgia Tech and Duke, you were right.

If you had it going down with Syracuse losing to Georgia Tech by 14 points in one of its worst offensive performances of the year, then turning around and scoring 95 in an upset of the No. 1 Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium, then you need to stop reading this and go buy a lottery ticket.

Syracuse's stunning 95-91 victory over Duke was one of the most entertaining college basketball games of the season, a back-and-forth affair that had it all.

The game was played at a fast, hectic pace with lots of scoring after Syracuse looked lost in falling behind quickly by a score 14-2. A 75-foot shot by Elijah Hughes ended the first half. Zion Williamson did Zion Williamson things with 35 points. Tyus Battle nearly matched him blow-by-blow with 32 points.

Paschal Chukwu and Frank Howard emerged from the shadows of inconsistency to give Syracuse a needed surge.

Syracuse got a little help in that Duke's Cam Reddish sat out the game with an illness and point guard Tre Jones left the game with a shoulder injury.

That said, Duke's fully stocked cupboard of McDonald's All-Americans should have been able to handle a Syracuse team that went 7-of-34 from 3-point range against Georgia Tech.

Instead, Duke said "hold my beer" and shot an abysmal 9-of-43 from beyond the arc against the Orange.

Frank Howard scores 16 second-half points in win over Duke: ‘I’m definitely back’ (PS; Ditota)

During one stretch of Syracuse’s second half battle with Duke, Frank Howard dominated the Orange offense.

He scored 12 of SU’s 13 points during that stretch with a combination of penetration and shooting.

He drained a 3-pointer to trim the Blue Devils’ lead to 67-62. He drove the lane and lobbed a pass to Paschal Chuwku, who was awarded two free throws on the play. He reached the rim on the bounce and was awarded two points on a Duke goaltend to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 70-65. Next came a 15-footer, another 3-pointer and a long jump shot just inside the 3-point arc.

Howard, mired in first-half foul trouble, did not score in the first 20 minutes of SU’s win over the Blue Devils. He saved all of it – all 16 of his points – for the second half, when the Orange outscored Duke 47-42 and emerged with a 95-91 overtime win over the nation’s top team.

He was asked, afterward, whether he would describe that second-half performance as vintage Frank Howard.

“Felt good getting to my spots, making plays,” Howard said. “Still a few plays I wanted back, a few shots I thought I should hit. But just gotta get back in the gym, continue to work. But it felt like that for me, yeah.”

Syracuse-Duke: 3 takeaways from the Orange's upset of the No. 1 Blue Devils | NCAA.com (ncaa.com; Boozell)

Syracuse upset No. 1 Duke by a score of 95-91 on Monday night. The Blue Devils were missing Cam Reddish the whole game, and Tre Jones for most of it.

Here are three takeaways from Syracuse's surprising win.

FINAL DUKE VS. SYRACUSE STATS

Jones is crucial on both ends. But he's especially impactful on defense.

Jones left the game early in the first half with a shoulder injury and didn't return. He was a menace on defense when he played, notching four steals in six minutes. Duke was in control when Jones was in the game.

Syracuse's guards erupted once he left. Alex O'Connell, his primary replacement, played well on offense. He went 4-for-8 from 3-point range and finished with 16 points. But there was a clear defensive dropoff, as Tyus Battle scored 32 points and Frank Howard chipped in 16. Battle would have been Jones's assignment; the latter is arguably the best perimeter defender in the country.

Syracuse had the toughest of tasks Monday: The unranked team headed south to take on No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. But the Orange managed to pull off a shocker that included a first-half buzzer beater from well beyond half court.

The long-range heave, all the way from the foul line extended area of Syracuse’s side of the court, was tossed up by the Orange’s Elijah Hughes. Somehow the ball went in, cutting Duke’s lead to just one and sending Syracuse to the locker room with a major morale boost before it finished off the upset in overtime, 95-91.

Down two starters, No. 1 Duke suffers overtime loss to Syracuse (newsobserver.com; Wiseman)

No.1 Duke got freshman standout Zion Williamson back from an eye injury put lost two other freshman starters while losing its first ACC game of the season on Monday night.

Playing without Cam Reddish (illness) and Tre Jones (shoulder injury), the Blue Devils struggled with perimeter shooting and dropped a 95-91 game in overtime to Syracuse.

Duke (14-2, 3-1 in ACC) made just one shot -- an Alex O’Connell 3-pointer -- over the first three minutes of overtime and Syracuse built a 93-88 lead.

ACC Roundup - Pitt Pulls Off A Major Upset (DBR; King)

When we looked at the Pitt-FSU game we put forth two contradictory ideas:

Pitt’s front court wasn’t enough to overcome Florida State’s athleticism

Florida State, historically, is not the smartest program in the world

As it turns out, 2>1.

Back in the early days of Coach K’s Duke program, Duke, lacking the athleticism of some ACC rivals, neutralized it by getting to the line as often as possible where, obviously, no one was guarding them.

Pitt did this against Florida State, getting to the line 46 times and hitting 38.

The Panthers held FSU to 34.5% overall and 9.1 from deep.

Mfiondu Kabengele, so terrific against Duke, fouled out in just 11 minutes. Terance Mann also fouled out but got 27 minutes. Trent Forrest and PJ Savoy both had four.

We didn’t see how Pitt could neutralize the athletic advantage FSU had but Jeff Capel remembered his Duke training and lore.

After the game, Capel said that “If we fight and we can play with some semblance of intelligence, we’ll have a chance. There are teams we’ll play against that are more talented than us. That’s the reality. But that doesn’t mean they’re better teams.”

Total lunar eclipse visible this weekend in Upstate NY (PS; Coin)

A total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon, will be visible in Upstate New York skies Sunday night.

The moon will be completely blocked by the earth’s shadow for about an hour, starting just before midnight. Lunar eclipses are also called “blood moons,” because they appear orange as sunlight bends through the earth’s atmosphere and hits the moon’s surface.

“Usually the full moon is very white and very bright, but in this eclipse we’re going to get a dim red moon because it will be just that tiny bit of light that trickles around the earth," said Walter Freeman, a Syracuse University physics professor.

So little light trickles around the earth that the moon will be just 1/10,000th as bright as usual, Freeman said.

This month’s eclipse also happens during a “super moon,” when the moon, at its closest point in its orbit to earth, appears slightly brighter than normal.
