Welcome to Bubble Gum Day!

Today is Bubble Gum Day. On this day, kids bring 50 cents to school, and donate it to a good cause. In exchange, they can chew bubble gum in school on this day. The school selects in advance, what cause the donations will go to. Ruth Spiro, the creator, wanted to have a day where kids can simply participate in donating, without constantly selling things. She says that since its creation, Bubble Gum Day has become a sweet success!

Bubble Gum Day was originally established for schools. But, libraries, clubs and community groups can and do participate. Even businesses are encouraged to hold a Bubble Gum Day event.

The date of this event was established on the first Friday of February, rather than a set date. This is so it will occur on a school day. Some websites, who have not researched this day, erroneously report it on a fixed date.

We hope you have a successful fundraiser on Bubble Gum Day.

Syracuse recruit Joe Girard III can score, but how good is he? (Mike's Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

Q: We all know Joe Girard scores a lot of points. Was wondering what his shooting percentage was and, in particular, for 3-pointers.

Bill M.

Mike: Joe Girard III, the Syracuse recruit from Glens Falls, N.Y., does indeed score a lot of points. This past Sunday, he scored 52 points in a 78-74 win over Amsterdam and in doing so scored his 4,000th career point.

And Girard was having an “off’’ night. He went 18-for-35 overall from the field (51 percent), an uncharacteristic 3-for-14 on 3-pointers and 12-for-17 on free throws (he was 11-for-13 in the second half).

Glens Falls doesn’t have individual player’s shooting numbers, but Girard’s father told me that he’s making about 50 percent of his field goal attempts and just under 40 percent of his 3-point shots for the season.

Last summer, Girard played on the Nike EYBL circuit with the Albany City Rocks. In 16 games, Girard averaged 12.2 points (second on the team to Isaiah Stewart), made 40.8 percent of his shots and 36.6 percent (40-for-109) of his shots from 3-point range.

Q: In your article today, you mentioned that Paschal Chukwu will turn 23 in April. Do you know who was the oldest player ever to play on the Syracuse basketball team?

Paul B.

Mike: This is a very interesting question and, while I wasn’t able to find a definitive answer, I did come up with a likely candidate.

After having his Syracuse career interrupted by World War II, Billy Gabor was 25 years old during his senior year. Gabor came to Syracuse in 1942 and averaged 12.1 points as a freshman. He then joined the Army Air Corps where he served as a bombardier.

He returned to Syracuse where he played three more seasons from 1945 to 1948. He finished his career with 1,344 points.

Syracuse Orange v. Pittsburgh Panters Predictions (2/2/19) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse finishes its three-game road swing at Pitt on Saturday at 6 p.m. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Jim Stechschulte and Brad Bierman give their predictions below.

BRAD BIERMAN (Season Record: 2-1): Before the season started and we told you Syracuse would have only two losses (7-2) in the ACC at the halfway point of conference play would you have been happy?

I think the majority in Orange Nation would have taken that record, with a road game at Duke amongst those nine games, and that’s exactly where the Orange will sit if they can defeat Pittsburgh for the second time in 14 days Saturday night (6:00 p.m. ET / ESPN2) in front of what’s expected to be a near sellout crowd at the Petersen Events Center, the culmination of an unusual three game ACC road swing.

Pittsburgh’s lost four straight games, and 16 straight ACC road games, so playing in front of the home crowd at “The Pete” and scheduled to wear 1980s throwback gold uniforms should create a frenzied atmosphere, but that won’t faze the ‘Cuse.

Winning at Cameron Indoor Stadium already as well as Notre Dame and Boston College, along with a consistent turnout of orange-clad fans away from the Dome certainly helps, but so does Tyus Battle. As he demonstrated in Wednesday’s win at B.C with 31 points. and in the previous win over the Panthers in which he had a game-high 22 points, Battle is again the X factor against a young Pitt team, along with the SU zone that limited the Panthers to a 22-for-65 shooting game (34%).

Panthers Back at Home to Face Syracuse Saturday - University of Pittsburgh Athletics (pittsburghpanthers.com)

The Opening Tip

• Pitt (12-9, 2-6) returns home for #PittRetro weekend to host Syracuse (15-6, 6-2) Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. with ESPN2 broadcasting the contest. The Panthers will wear new retro gold jerseys for the contest.

• The Panthers have played the most difficult conference schedule in the country through eight ACC contests according to the KenPom.com conference strength of schedule rankings. Five of Pitt's eight ACC contests have been against ranked opponents, including four games against AP Top 15 teams.

• Four of Pitt's top five scorers are newcomers with first-year players accounting for 67.2 percent (1046-of-1557) of the team's scoring. Freshmen Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au'Diese Toney account for 52.6 percent (819-of-1557) of the team's scoring.

• Nine different players have scored in double figures for Pitt this season with freshmen Xavier Johnson (19) and Trey McGowens (13) combining for 32 double-digit scoring efforts, including 10 games with 20 or more points scored.

After promising start, Pitt taking its lumps in ACC play (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

Early in the season, the Pitt men’s basketball team could do no wrong.

Okay, that may be going a bit too far. But there was no doubt the team was not only meeting expectations, but exceeding them.

Pitt got off to a blistering 6-0 start before losing a one-point heartbreaker on the road to a ranked Iowa team. And despite a couple of more non-conference losses, the Panthers still finished with a 10-3 record. The ten wins, by the way, was already two more than they had all of last year.

In ACC play, the team even proved it belonged. After being outgunned against North Carolina, Pitt rebounded for its first ACC win since 2017 by defeating a now-ranked Louisville team. The Panthers then narrowly lost against ranked NC State but then came back to knock off No. 11 Florida State, winning by double digits. Pitt was about as impressive in those four games as they have been unimpressive in the last four, which have all resulted in losses.

At 12-5, there was even talk of sneaking into a postseason tournament. Now? Not so much.

Pitt still technically has a winning record but the team has undoubtedly cooled. The Panthers have lost their last four games and, while the competition has been good, the results have been particularly bad. Pitt has lost each game by double digits and while the margin of victory in any hasn’t been greater than 15 points, those final scores have been a little deceiving.

Syracuse Basketball: Road warrior skills will take SU deep in tournament (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad managed to escape Boston College with a victory, thanks to an absolutely monster effort from Tyus Battle.

The ‘Cuse hoops outfit took a punch in the gut last weekend, losing to then-No. 10 Virginia Tech in its most-lopsided defeat of the 2018-19 campaign. The Orange followed up that debacle with a gritty performance at Boston College on Wednesday evening, an outcome that really impressed me and should please our entire fan base.

In besting the Eagles by six points at the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass., Syracuse rode stellar performances from junior wing Tyus Battle and freshman guard Buddy Boeheim to improve to 4-1 in true road duels during the present term. That kind of mark away from the Carrier Dome is what SU (15-6, 6-2) will need for its Big Dance resume as this stanza continues onward, given its lackluster showing prior to Atlantic Coast Conference competition commencing.

After allowing BC to secure a nine-point edge early in the first half, the ‘Cuse collected 14 in a row to go up by five. The Orange headed to the break with a seven-point advantage, on the strength of tremendous shooting. Following intermission, Syracuse quickly boosted its lead to 11, but the Eagles (11-8, 2-5) responded by trimming the deficit to just two.

From there, the ‘Cuse got separation to the tune of nine points, and Boston College ultimately would get no closer than six. Battle, who finished with 31 points, took over. His variety in scoring proved virtually unstoppable, whether mid-range jumpers, driving to the hoop, or connecting on 3-pointers. Boeheim, meanwhile, chipped in 13 points, including three baskets from beyond the arc.

Syracuse Drops Men's Basketball Behind Battle's 31 | BANG. (bcgavel.com; Demerlis)

Tonight felt like déjà vu for the Eagles in multiple facets. Jordan Chatman hitting catch-and-shoot threes in transition. Ky Bowman hitting a double clutch three-pointer with the shot clock winding down. Steffon Mitchell dominating in the rebounds and assist column. Jared Hamilton pump faking and driving by the defender for the two-handed baseline slam—well, usually that’s Jairus.

This night had all the makings for a resounding win that would push the Eagles further up the conference standings. Yet, in a rocking Conte Forum swarmed with a sea of maroon and gold (and at least a little bit of orange), the Eagles came up short.

Challenged by the infamous 2-3 Syracuse zone and NBA prospect Tyus Battle, the Boston College men’s basketball team (11-8, 2-5 ACC) could not pull off the upset against the Syracuse Orange (15-6, 6-2 ACC), losing 77-71 Wednesday night.

Off his recent three-game hot streak, Chatman was strong from the tip-off. In the first 2:52, Chatman recorded a layup, two free throws, and a three pointer to send the Eagles on a 10-2 run.

Jared Hamilton was the Eagle’s first substitution of the game. Right away, he provided a spark for Head Coach Jim Christian and co., taking a tough drive to the basket and drawing a foul. Hamilton’s intensity continued throughout this game and kept the Eagles neck and neck with the Orange down the stretch.

After the hot start by the Eagles, the Orange responded with a run of their own. Back-to-back threes by Syracuse’s Elijah Hughes and a transition layup by Battle cut a nine-point lead to just one. A monster dunk by Oshae Brissett added to a 14-0 run by the Orange to take a three-point lead against the Eagles halfway through the first half.

Syracuse great Preston Shumpert raises sons to choose own basketball paths (PS; Curtis)

Preston Shumpert is silently sitting in the bleachers, taking mental notes.

Shumpert, one of the leading scorers in Syracuse basketball history, appreciates the moment. He’s watching his sons, Payton and Preston Jr., playing basketball for Jamesville-DeWitt’s varsity team. He’s whispering, making hand signals and using halftime to share what he observed.

At 6-foot-6, Preston towers over almost everyone, but that doesn’t prevent him from having a conversation with anyone who approaches him. He loves to talk about his kids, and he talks about how he wants them to continue to improve at the game that gave him the opportunity to travel the world.

“You just want to support them, you know what I mean,” Preston said. “I’m not going to be crazy on the sidelines screaming and hollering. We make eye contact and I kind of give them pointers here and there, but they gotta go out there and learn on their own. They’re good about that stuff. They don’t need me to always tell them something.”

Leading Off

No. 2 Duke steps out of conference play for the final time this regular season, welcoming St. John’s to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils have won 146 consecutive non-conference home games -- the longest active streak in the NCAA. Duke last dropped a non-conference home game on February 26, 2000 -- 83-82 to St. John’s.

Duke has won four straight overall and in a three-way tie atop at the ACC at 7-1 -- it marks the Blue Devils’ best ACC start since beginning the 2010-11 season 12-1.

RJ Barrett, who leads the ACC in scoring at 23.6 points, needs 30 points to reach 10th place on the single-season Duke freshman scoring list. He’s 223 points shy of Marvin Bagley III’s freshman record 694 points.

Barrett is this week’s ACC Freshman of the Week, earning the award for the third time this season. He averaged 25.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of ACC wins last week over Pitt and Georgia Tech.

Zion Williamson -- the nation’s only player averaging 20.0+ points and shooting .600+ from the field -- is second in the ACC in scoring at 22.0. He and Barrett are the only teammates each averaging 20.0+ points this season.

Tre Jones is the nation’s only player averaging 5.0+ assists (5.56), 2.0+ steals (2.0) with a 5.0+ assist-turnover ratio (5.56). His assist-turnover ratio is second nationally.

Duke completed the month of January with a 7-1 record, its best record in the month of January since going 7-1 in the 2008-09 season.

UNC-Louisville matchup headlines this weekend in the ACC (centredaily.com; AP; McCreary)

A look at the upcoming week around the Atlantic Coast Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND

No. 9 North Carolina at No. 15 Louisville. Two of the four one-loss teams atop the ACC standings meet, and revenge figures to be on the minds of the Tar Heels (16-4, 6-1) after the Cardinals (16-5, 7-1) handed their only conference defeat — in historic fashion, no less. Louisville's 83-62 thumping in Chapel Hill marked North Carolina's worst home loss under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams. The Cardinals have the longest active winning streak in the league at six games and are beginning a run of games against four consecutive Top 25 opponents.

Super Bowl Sunday And ACC Basketball (DBR; Jacobs)

A few ACC traditions endure. At least we’ve still got an ACC game on Super Bowl Sunday, although the conference and its TV partners are remarkably quiet on the subject.

The league and our national football holiday have shared a rich link since an undefeated NC State squad led by David Thompson edged a comparably gifted Maryland team 87-85 in January 1973. A late score by Thompson, the ACC’s greatest player -- a tip of a missed shot at the buzzer -- sealed the outcome in an unusual national telecast of a college game in that pre-cable, pre-dunk era.

Given the formidable stature of the opponent, the Wolfpack’s win also marked a crucial step in maintaining the second and last unblemished season in conference history.

The ACC contest brimmed with drama, in sharp contrast with the lackluster 14-7 Super Bowl that followed. The Miami Dolphins handily won Super Bowl VII despite the close final score, concluding the only undefeated NFL season (17-0) since the 1967 advent of the Game Of Multimillion Dollar Commercials.

The most memorable, and comic, play in that Super Bowl came when a 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked late in the game. The Dolphins’ left-footed kicker, Garabed “Garo” Yepremian, recovered and tried to pass the ball, only to have it intercepted and run back for a touchdown. That was it for scoring by Washington.

Last season, shortly after Boston College went to overtime to defeat Georgia Tech, New England, an NFL team from Boston, fell to Philadelphia, another city rife with insurgents resistant to the status quo during our uncivil revolution.
