Welcome to Football National Letter of Intent Day!

Signing on the dotted line of the National Letter of Intent means three things:

Your student-athlete has committed to one year at the university. They do not need to sign an NLI after their first year. The school is required to let student-athletes know if their scholarship is being renewed after the first year.
The university is promising to provide an athletic scholarship for that year. The NLI and financial aid package are two separate documents. Your student-athlete will need to sign both.
Your student-athlete’s recruiting journey is over. No other schools can continue to recruit them.

An NLI is a legal, binding contract. So, it is something you are going to want to fully understand before signing it. Your athlete’s new coach and representatives from the school can help answer your questions or concerns when it comes to signing the NLI.

Syracuse basketball loses to Florida State 80-62: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

Seminole Surge
Let's say you changed channels after the Syracuse University men's basketball team trailed by 22 points in the first half of Tuesday night's game against Florida State.

A check of the final score, an 80-62 victory by the Seminoles, would likely cause you to shrug and say you didn't miss much, but that wasn't really the case on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse did trail by 22 points (36-14) at one point, but cut the Seminoles lead down to one by a score of 46-45 in the second half.

Syracuse ultimately couldn't keep up with Florida State as the Orange seven-man rotation was outlasted by a Seminoles team that has 10 players average 11 minutes or more per game.

FSU went on a 12-0 run in the second half, one of several runs it made in the game, and put the Orange away.

“You can’t give a team 20 and think you’re going to come back,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said. “We made, probably, the best effort we made all year long to get back in the game. We had to give too much to get back."

The press defense didn't save the day but it did save a little face for Boeheim and the Orange.

"If it wasn’t for the press, we would have lost by 30, 35 points," Boeheim said. "The press helped us a little bit. It got us back in the game. They’re really good and that happens. You’re going to have those games. We just have to regroup. It doesn’t matter who you play, you hav to be ready. It’s going to be tough. We have to play 40 minutes. It’s not going to be easy.”

No. 22 FSU snatches huge win at Syracuse (tomahawknation.com; Minnick)

It’s often said (though less often true) that Florida State struggles against the zone. That was not the case tonight. FSU turned a three-game ACC win-streak into four with a road demolition of Syracuse, 80-62.

There was a heat wave in Syracuse with temperatures topping 60 degrees this week, and FSU seemed right at home, as Seminole shooters came out scorching from beyond the arc. M.J. Walker got things started with two quick threes, but for the first 10 minutes of the game shots were pouring in from seemingly everyone wearing a ’Nole uniform. In fact, FSU shooters made 7 of their first 9 three-point attempts.

Combine that with some quick hands on defense and some missed open shots by Syracuse, and Florida State stormed out to a 36-14 lead midway through the first half.

But basketball is a game of runs, and the Orange sure had one in them.

Tyus Battle, as pure a scorer as there is in college basketball, started doing what he was born to do. The lead quickly evaporated from 22 to 13. Florida State’s shooting touch disappeared at the other end, and when the Seminoles got chances to run off of turnovers, sloppy passing led to empty possessions. With the lead cut all the way to eight, Terance Mann finally broke the drought with a deep three, but Battle came back and answered with one of his own. Mann hit a running bucket with 0.1 seconds left, but it was waived off due to a dubious charge. In all, it was a 17-4 run by the Orange, so FSU went to the locker room up just eight, 39-31.

FSU pushed it to nine early in the second half, but shots continued to clank and fouls started to mount. With 11:55 to go, the Seminoles clung to a precarious 51-49 lead.

The teams traded blows for a couple minutes, leading to a Leonard Hamilton timeout.

Instant Juice: Syracuse 62, Florida State 80 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse’s disappointing 80-62 loss to Florida State on Tuesday evening at the Carrier Dome:

WHAT HAPPENED: After three free throws from Elijah Hughes with 10:11 left pulled Syracuse to within 55-52, the Seminoles scored 12 unanswered points. By the time Phil Cofer made a pair of free throws to cap the run, FSU extended to a 15 point lead with 6:25 left, and Syracuse could never threaten from there. SU was in trouble nearly immediately, with Florida State racing out to a 33-12 lead. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim employed a full court press and the Orange rallied to cut the deficit to 39-31 heading into half.

ANALYSIS: Syracuse’s loss can be attributed to three main stats: (1) 5-20 from beyond the arc; (2) 14-23 free throw shooting; and (3) an unsightly 18 turnovers. The Orange generated decent looks for their outside shooters, but only Elijah Hughes (4-9 from 3-point land) was able to take advantage. Buddy Boeheim, who had made at least one 3-pointer in his last seven games, went 0-6 from downtown. Oshae Brissett (4-8) and Frank Howard (0-3) were the biggest culprits from the charity stripe. And Tyus Battle and Hughes each had four turnovers in a forgettable night.

HERO: Mfiondu Kabengele and Terance Mann combined for 40 points, including a perfect 6-6 from 3-point land. Battle led the Orange with 23 points.

ZERO: Syracuse squandered an opportunity for a potential Quad 1 win, with Florida State currently sitting at 31 in the NET rankings (a Quad 1 win is awarded at home for a top 30 win). Aside from an upcoming home game against Quad 3 Boston College and a later road game against Wake Forest, SU matches up in all Quad 1 games. It’s make or break time for SU’s NCAA resume.

Taking a Glimpse at the Future of Syracuse Basketball – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz/net; Shults)

Syracuse is in the midst of another promising basketball season, where anything could happen if the Orange make March Madness. But let’s take a look at what the future has in store for SU.

Next year Jim Boeheim has to replace Frank Howard, and will likely need to replace Tyus Battle too. He already has Howard’s replacement on the roster, in Jalen Carey. The point guard was electric to start the season, but has since regressed significantly. He hasn’t had an injury, but it looks like he’s lost all confidence in his abilities. Right now he can barely keep from dribbling the ball off his foot.

This could be due to Boeheim’s coaching. Howard has struggled with similar confidence issues throughout his career. Carey seems so scared of being pulled after turning the ball over, that he’s afraid to make a play. He needs to get back to his slashing, dynamic style of basketball that can switch momentum in the blink of an eye. With Joe Girard or Buddy Boeheim on the court next season, Carey will have room to get to the bucket whenever he wants. He just needs to regain his confidence. An offseason in the program, where he directs the offense should help him find his lost swagger.

Cam Shafts The Eagles (DBR; Sumner)

Duke overcame what could charitably be described as a lackluster first half Tuesday night to defeat visiting Boston College 80-55.

The win gives Duke an 8-1 record in the ACC, 20-2 overall, while dropping Boston College to 2-7, 11-10.

This time it was Cam Reddish who led the freshman parade for Duke, a game-high 24 points, half of them clustered around a crucial seven-minute stretch spanning both halves.

BC beat Duke last year and they didn’t back down from the favored Blue Devils. But if Duke had payback on their minds, they took their time showing it.

A lot of it was some really bad shooting. The Blue Devils were 1-for-15 on 3s in the first half. It was a collective effort. Six different Blue Devils gave it a try.

“Their zone really messed us up,” Mike Krzyzewski said. “We were really out of sync. We didn’t communicate well. No one was talking. Even when we said something to run on offense, we didn’t run it. We were kind of fortunate to be down only two at the half.”

Brownlow: Lesson learned, North Carolina is refusing to settle :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Brownlow)

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams doesn't much care for losing at all, so it makes since that he has never been much of a believer in a 'good loss'.

It's why, even after a record-setting 113-96 win over NC State to sweep the season series, he visibly bristled at the notion of the 21-point beating his team took in that same building to Louisville less than a month earlier being a good thing.

"I'm one of those guys that I don't believe you need to lose to have good things happen. We could've played crappy and won on a 55-foot shot and I would've been much happier," Williams said. "But it did one very positive thing - that's the last time we've had crappy practices a day before or two days before a game. Since then, the preparation and focus immediately before a game has been really good."

North Carolina has won six straight ACC games, tying its longest streak from last season and almost certainly giving itself a chance to equal its 8-game streak in 2016 with beleaguered Miami coming to town on Saturday for No. 7.
