Syracuse loss exposes Louisville basketball's weaknesses at prime moment (courier-journal.com; Lerner)

At the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night, Louisville coach Chris Mack saw something he had rarely seen from his team.

It wasn't just that what should have been a 10th Atlantic Coast Conference win and a confidence boost ahead of Saturday's matchup with No. 3 Virginia instead turned into a nightmarish ordeal as Louisville was smothered by Syracuse's zone defense in a 69-49 loss.

Or that the Cardinals' worst scoring and shooting game of the season was also their first 20-point loss to an unranked team since a 90-59 loss at Providence on Jan. 10, 2012.

No, this was an anomaly for a different reason.

"We haven’t been that team that’s let offensive struggles or missed shots, for the most part, affect our defensive energy and effort," Mack said, "but it did tonight."

Lack of effort seems like an unfortunate yet easy enough problem to fix, but the timing — on the heels of an embarrassing loss to Duke and a sketchy win over Clemson — is as puzzling as it is potentially disastrous.

Louisville's backloaded schedule was always destined to grow tougher as season went on, but the hope was that the team would as well. Instead, the Cardinals (18-9, 9-5 ACC) seem trapped in a dark downward spiral as Selection Sunday draws near.

Through its first 11 ACC games, before the Duke loss, Louisville was shooting 46.7 percent overall and 38 percent from beyond the arc. Both those figures ranked third in the conference.

In the three games since, the Cards are averaging 34.2 percent overall and 28.7 percent from 3-point range. They've also been outscored off turnovers 40-22.

Is Mack concerned this could be a Duke hangover effect?

Louisville decked by Syracuse in worst loss of the season (courier-journal.com; Lerner)

This is a trend Louisville basketball wants no part of.

Four days after scoring just 56 points in a one-point win over Clemson, Louisville turned in its lowest-scoring game of the season Wednesday night and succumbed to Syracuse, 69-49, at the Carrier Dome.

Louisville, ranked 22nd in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, had a miserable night from 3-point range and could not overcome Syracuse's patented zone defense.

"It was an ugly game for us on the offensive end, really, for 40 minutes," said Louisville coach Chris Mack. "Out of 27 games, I have been disappointed with our effort in maybe one other game, and you can put that in that column."

Nearly 26 minutes elapsed between Louisville's first 3-pointer by Jordan Nwora in the opening half and its second by Ryan McMahon.

The Orange got off to a slow start and only shot 38 percent in the first half, but the Cards' shooting was even worse. Even with a decent effort on the boards, Louisville shot a pitiful 23 percent from the field and trailed Syracuse 35-23 at the break.

The second half didn't start much better as Louisville missed seven of its first eight shots. The Cards were forced to execute a full-court press in an ineffective attempt to score some transition points and keep the deficit from growing.

Louisville at one point found itself down by 21 points, its largest deficit of the season.

The loss dropped the Cards to (18-9, 9-5 ACC) on the season, their first loss at the Carrier Dome since 2015.

Louisville's top three scorers, Nwora, Dwayne Sutton and Christen Cunningham, combined for just 20 points. Elijah Hughes led Syracuse with 18 points.

Here are some quick takeaways from the game:

Not in the zone

The Cards started off sticking Nwora at the high post near the free-throw line to combat the Orange's 2-3 zone defense, but Syracuse made it difficult to complete post entry passes and Louisville was forced to rely on dribble penetration or, for the most part, swing the ball around the perimeter.

Syracuse beats No. 18 Louisville 69-49 (si.com; AP)

Syracuse desperately needed a game like this and slumping Louisville obliged.

Elijah Hughes scored 18 points and Oshae Brissett had 16 to lead four players in double figures as the Orange beat the 18th-ranked Cardinals 69-49 on Wednesday night.

The Orange, who had lost two of three, got back on track after being off for a week, and their third win this season over a ranked team was paced by their 2-3 zone defense.

“Louisville has been a really good road team... they’ve been very, very good on the road, so a good win,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “I thought the week off helped us. I thought we were able to do some things practice-wise that helped us.”

ACC Basketball Roundup - State Survives BC, Syracuse Wins A Key Game & Georgia Tech Tops 70 Points (DBR; King)

Duke-UNC sucked up most of the oxygen, as usual, but there were other ACC games Wednesday night.

Syracuse got little trouble from Louisville, winning 69-49, NC State needed overtime 89-80 and Georgia Tech beat Pitt 73-65.

Jose Alvarado broke out of his slump, scoring 29. He also had six rebounds, five assists and two steals. James Banks had a nice game too with seven points, 10 points and five blocks.

Tech has had real trouble scoring lately so 73 must have seemed really good.

Pitt went with four guards and 6-9 Kene Chukwuka and he scored just two points. We reiterate: the Panthers desperately need front court help but can’t get it until next year.

As we suggested Tuesday, BC has proven to be a gritty lot and they nearly pulled off an upset at NC State, losing in overtime 89-80.

State had a significant second half lead but couldn’t hold it. The Pack went nearly nine minutes without scoring (Hokie Gremlins struck again?)

BC played again without Wynston Tabbs and Jordan Chatman re-aggravated a finger injury and didn’t play after half-time. We really admire the heart this team has shown.

When Duke hosted Syracuse January 14, the bone crushing charge of Zion Williamson through Marek Dolezaj was a blow felt by everyone in the stadium, but really, how powerful was it? We asked Syracuse Physics Lab manager Sam Sampere to lay it out.

How do you pronounce that?

For anyone new to the Central New York area, we want you to be able to find your way around town, without butchering our street and village names. Salina Street is Sah-LIE-na, not Sah-LEE-na. (Take a hint, Siri.)
