Welcome to Levi Strauss Day!

Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman born in Bavaria on February 26th, 1829, who came to the United States with his family the mid-1800s when he was 18 years old. Strauss began as a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco, California, where he sold various items such as clothing, bedding, bags and handkerchiefs to settlers, many of whom had arrived in California to take part in the gold rush.

Needless to say, the hard physical labor required of the miners of the day and those building new railroads made it difficult for them to find clothing that would last for more than a few months without falling apart at the seams. One day in 1870, one of Strauss’ clients, a tailor named Jacob W. Davis was approached by a woman who needed a pair of exceptionally strong working pants for her husband, a woodcutter. Her request prompted Davis to make a pair of pants from the denim he’d bought at Strauss’ shop that he then strengthened with copper rivets to reinforce the stitching. Word of the new article of clothing and its endurance spread fast, and soon Davis was not able to keep up with the demand for his invention, nor did he have the resources to open a larger tailor shop or obtain a patent.

Syracuse basketball betting line: Orange open as big road underdog against North Carolina (PS; Carlson)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team opened as a 12.5-point underdog in its road game at North Carolina, according to the website VegasInsider.com. The teams are scheduled to meet in Chapel Hill at 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Syracuse has been a bigger underdog just once this season. The Orange won that game, a memorable 95-91 overtime victory at Duke.

The Tar Heels (22-5, 12-2) are tied for first-place in the ACC with Duke and Virginia, and enter the game off a week in which they beat both Duke and Florida State. Syracuse (18-9, 9-5) is tied in the loss column with both Florida State and Virginia Tech as the three teams fight to finish in fourth place in the league and earn the final double bye for the ACC Tournament.

UNC vs. Syracuse: Three Things to Watch Hood)

Life comes at you fast in the ACC. Just like Carolina couldn’t relax and enjoy their Duke win before focusing on Florida State, now Syracuse and their 2-3 zone roll into Chapel Hill. Coach Jim Boeheim brings his squad in after suffering a close loss to Duke on Saturday, and they are looking to build their resume as the NCAA Tournament inches closer.

So what are three things to look for as Carolina plays Syracuse?

The infamous 2-3 zone
Perhaps no other coach has become as defined by a defense as Boeheim has with his 2-3 zone. As most players grow up playing against man-to-man, the one time they have to face zone defense usually manages to confound teams simply because it’s different.

Carolina hasn’t been one of those teams.

Since the Orange joined the league in the 2013-14 season, Syracuse has gotten a grand total of one win against the Tar Heels. One. That win was the first time they met in 2014, meaning UNC has seven straight against Boeheim, including three straight in 2016. The results speak for themselves: Roy Williams and his coaching staff know how to prepare his teams for this defense.

Fox News contributor, Fox Nation commentator and former ESPN reporter Britt McHenry is no stranger to controversy. But remarks she made on Twitter about basketball fans showing support for Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim haven't been received well by some.

Boeheim received a loud ovation from the crowd at Syracuse's game Saturday against Duke. He was not charged after a fatal car accident in which he struck and killed a man along an interstate highway earlier in the week. He issued a public apology and insisted that Jorge Jimenez's death "will be with me for the rest of my life."

McHenry's tweet:

@BrittMcHenry
Wait. I’m sorry. Missed the memo that we’re supposed to cheer Jim Boeheim for playing in a game after...killing someone?! You people cheering for this are SICk.

Right now Syracuse is an 8 seed on most bracketology sites. That seems fair when you look at the updated resume after a huge win over Louisville (first ranked win at home this year) and a respectable showing against number one Duke.

(18-9) (9-5 ACC) T-5 in ACC. Florida State holds tiebreaker though.

Home: 13-5
Road: 5-2
Neutral: 0-2
Quality Wins: @Duke, Louisville, @Ohio State
Other Decent Wins: Clemson, @Pittsburgh, @Boston College, Georgetown
Bad Losses: Georgia Tech, Old Dominion, UCONN (MSG), Oregon (MSG)

The Rankings

NET: 44 (*Insert corny Syracuse joke here about how fitting it is they are ranked 44*)
BPI: 34
RPI: 39 (RPI is basically irrelevant but here it is anyways)
KenPom: 39

We’d like to welcome Scott Rich as a DBR contributor. In the past, Scott contributed to the Duke Chronicle and we think you’ll agree that he’s a smart and insightful writer.

Coaches at all levels of basketball will tell you there are two primary ways to beat a 2-3 zone: either make it move side-to-side enough to create seams, or make it collapse in order to open up the baseline and corners.

In prior incarnations of the fledgling Duke-Syracuse rivalry, the Blue Devils relied upon stellar three-point shooting to do the former. But given the result of the teams’ prior meeting this season, and the well-documented three-point shooting woes of this year’s Duke team, it was clear entering last night’s game that the Blue Devils would have to find a way to do the latter to break down Jim Boeheim’s vaunted zone defense.

The gameplan was clear early on: get the ball to R.J. Barrett at the high-post and allow him to operate in the paint. This was initially successful, as Barrett scored six of Duke’s first nine points utilizing his stellar ability to score through contact at the rim, and also displayed a soft touch with floaters in the lane. It’s worth noting that one of the biggest side-effects of the absence of Tre Jones for a majority of the first Duke-Syracuse matchup of the season (combined with Cam Reddish’s absence) was that Barrett was forced to initiate the offense from the top of the key and was less able to operate from the middle of the zone.

With only a few games to go for most teams, the ACC race appears to be shaping up mostly as expected - Duke, North Carolina and Virginia are your top three, clearly, and everyone else is fighting for that No. 4 spot. And by everyone else, I mean four teams with either five or six ACC losses.

Updated ACC:

1. Duke 12-2 (2-1)
2. UNC 12-2 (1-1)
3. UVa 12-2 (1-2)
4. VT 10-5
5. FSU 9-5 (1-0 vs. Cuse)
6. Cuse 9-5
7. UL 9-6
8. NCSU 8-7
9. Clemson 6-8#TuesdayInCharlotte
10. BC 4-10 (1-0 vs. The U)
11. The U 4-10
12. GT 4-11
13. WF 3-11 (1-0 vs. ND)
14. ND 3-11
15. Pitt 2-12

Considering its schedule, NC State probably has an outside shot of sneaking into that top 4 - but it would take a lot. Louisville would have to lose two more since the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker, although I mean, considering the way Louisville has been playing lately? That's ... not out of the realm. Even with only three games to go.

Louisville is 13 of 49 on 2-pointers in the past two games, which 26.5%. Really struggling getting into the lane and beating guys off the dribble. Really struggling scoring out of the post.

Lobsters are a big seller for Valentine’s Day, and to prepare, Wegmans stocks its tanks with bigger choices in early February for lovers planning a romantic evening.

But this year, a different couple ended up at the grocery store in DeWitt.

A few days before Feb. 14, an unusually large male and female arrived. The male weighed 10.78 pounds, the female 9.08 pounds.

“The minute we got them people started taking photos,” the store’s seafood manager, Kevin Eldred, said.
Romantic rumors blossomed, as did photos on social media. Talk spread that the male might be 100 years old. Fans of “Friends” noted lobsters mate for life.

Someone, the East Side Moms of Syracuse posted on Facebook, ought to buy the old guy and keep him as a pet.

I am with you buddy. I have adult PDA, which is what you had. Mine is considered too small to bother to repair. In that regard I am lucky, but I have passed out, in slow motion swoon form, 3 times over the last 70 years. I can relate to your story. The good news is that I have never had any after effects and I live a very physically active life.
