Celebrating-Language-UN-English-Language-Day.jpg
Welcome to English Language Day!

English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN). In February 2010, the UN created six language days "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization." The days were also created "to increase awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community." The creation of the days was part of the 2010 International Mother Language Day. Besides English, there are days that honor the Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Spanish languages. Events are held at the UN Headquarters each year, and the day is celebrated at other UN locations—known as duty stations—around the world.

April 23 was chosen for the holiday's date because it is the observed birthday and death date of William Shakespeare, who is seen by many as the greatest writer of the English language. True to its name, the language originated in England. Similar in form to Frisian, Dutch, and German, it is a West Germanic language and is part of the Indo-European language family. English is known as a "world language" because it is so widely spoken; about 2 billion people—close to a third of the world's population—can speak it. It is the main language used in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some island nations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is an official language in some other countries, including South Africa, India, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Syracuse basketball deep dive: The zone, 2nd halves, good, bad and ugly (PS; Ditota)

The Syracuse men's basketball season ended in an arena in Salt Lake City, a swift, decisive culmination of a year that looked a lot like SU's last four seasons.

SU has finished in the middle of the ACC in each of the last five years. It has averaged about 20 wins and 14 losses. It has finished as high as a tie for sixth in the conference (this season) and as low as tied for 10th (last year). It has resided squarely in the middle of the ACC pack over these past five years, despite a conference schedule that includes at least two dates each with conference cellar-dwellers Pittsburgh and Boston College.

We've taken a deep statistical look at this year's SU squad, where it worked, where it failed. Dive in with us.

The zone

Perhaps nothing rouses the SU basketball fan base like the 2-3 zone.

Those fans seem to reside in three categories: The never-zoners, the sometimes zoners and the zealous zoners.

Some facts about how the zone performed this season:

Of its 13 non-conference opponents in 2018-19, SU held 11 of them below their average 3-point shooting percentages. Only Cornell and Connecticut shot the ball better than usual from deep distance against SU. (Old Dominion was really close: .346 vs. SU compared to .349 on the season.)

Conference opponents were a bit different, though. SU held 10 of 18 opponents below their 3-point shooting averages. Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Boston College (1), Florida State, Duke (2), Wake Forest and Virginia each shot a higher percentage from the 3-point line vs. SU than usual.

And in the postseason, two of three teams (Pitt, Baylor) made a higher percentage of 3s than their season averages.

Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball welcomes talented, versatile recruiting class - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Syracuse athletics officially announced Monday that 6-11 center Jesse Edwards, a native of Netherlands via Florida’s IMG Academy and its Post-Grad team only since this past December, signed his National Letter of Intent with the Orange, capping off a five member recruiting class that is likely to include players translating from Jim Boeheim to the program’s next coach, if they stick around that long.

Like every basketball coach that has ever worked the sidelines, Jim Boeheim loves height both from his scholarship players and as many has he can find to add to the roster among his walk-ons to have ready in practice.

The late addition of Edwards, possessing plenty of skills to be developed at the ‘Melo Center and needed depth in the middle with Marek Dolezaj and Bourama Sidibe, also brings in a frosh class that covers all five positions on the court and more.

At 6-4, Brycen Goodine is going to be patient behind Jalen Carey and Howard Washington and eventually dazzle with the ball and without it and on defense at the top of the zone. Joe Girard is just as versatile with the ball or not at 6-1, and he’s going to create a double lethal outside shooting option with a bigger and stronger Buddy Boeheim.

James Banks Applies for NBA Draft (ramblinwreck.com)

Georgia Tech junior James Banks has submitted paperwork to the NBA league office to make himself available for the NBA Draft, Banks and head coach Josh Pastner announced Monday.

The 6-9 center from Decatur, Ga., who was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s All-Defensive team this past season, has submitted his application to the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee and to the NBA. The application enables Banks to work out for NBA teams and attend the NBA Draft Combine, if invited, and receive feedback on his potential draft status. He must remove his name from the draft by May 29 (NCAA withdrawal deadline) in order to maintain his college eligibility. Under new NCAA rules, college players can retain the services of an agent during the evaluation process.

“James will get the opportunity over the next few weeks to receive all the feedback he needs from NBA people to make a decision on his future,” said Pastner. “He is a tremendous young man and an excellent student-athlete.”

Banks led the ACC and ranked 11th nationally in blocked shots during the 2018-19 season. He averaged 10.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while connecting on 56.4 percent of his shots from the floor.

California prep guard Cassius Stanley chooses Duke over KU, others (kansascity.com; Dedore)

Cassius Stanley has decided to play college basketball at Duke.

Stanley, a 6-foot-5 senior shooting guard from Sierra Canyon High in Chatsworth, California, on Monday announced for the Blue Devils over Kansas, UCLA and Oregon in a ceremony at his high school gymnasium.

Stanley, the No. 33-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2019 by , averaged 17.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 2018-19.

He is the second player from Sierra Canyon to be recruited in the last three years by Duke, which signed Marvin Bagley III in 2017.

“It’s good to get it off my chest,” Stanley said of making his decision. “I talked to my family, prayed to God.”

He said the reason he picked Duke was “probably the coaching staff. Coach K is a storied coach. I think it (Duke) gives me the best opportunity to reach my potential on the court and off the court.”

At the ceremony, Stanley was interviewed prior to the playing of a video which revealed his choice of Duke.

Duke men's basketball's Marques Bolden, Javin DeLaurier officially testing NBA Draft waters (dukechronicle.com; Saul)

Throughout the 2018-19 season, the NBA future of certain Blue Devils lurked in nearly every conversation about the Duke squad.

Although this discussion focused almost entirely on the freshmen trio of Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish, two unexpected Blue Devils threw their hats into the NBA ring: Marques Bolden and Javin DeLaurier.

A release from the team on Monday morning announced that Bolden and DeLaurier would test the NBA Draft waters, and that each filed the proper paperwork before the April 21 deadline Sunday night. Neither Blue Devil will sign with an agent, and thus will have the opportunity to return to Duke in the fall if they decide in the coming weeks that their respective draft stock is too low.

Bolden came to campus with high expectations—the junior center was ranked No. 16 overall and the second-ranked center in the Class of 2016. In his freshman campaign, Bolden struggled with injuries and failed to carve out a consistent role, averaging only 6.5 minutes in his 24 appearances.

Bolden's sophomore campaign began on a more promising note, with eight-point, 10-rebound effort against Portland State and and a 17-point, 10-rebound performance against St. Francis (Pa.). But a knee injury sidelined the DeSoto, Texas, native for most of January, putting his breakout on hold.

New Thai restaurant on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt is a family affair (PS; Pucci)

For Thai Thai Cuisine owner Jenny Bassett, restaurants run in the family.

She opened the restaurant, located at 3138 Erie Blvd. E., in DeWitt, in late March. Her brother works as the head chef and her daughter is a server.

Bassett’s mother ran a restaurant in Bangkok in the 1990s before immigrating to Portland, Oregon, where she has operated Thai restaurants since the early 2000s. Bassett’s sister also owns a restaurant in Portland, specializing in sushi and poke bowls.

Bassett came to Syracuse in 2003. After more than 15 years working at a number of Asian restaurants in the area, she now has a place of her own.

“This is the first time I’m able to bring the family recipes here,” she said.

The spot was formerly home to Tanduri Hut and Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant, but you’d be hard-pressed to tell from the inside. The restaurant underwent a complete renovation, including an all-new kitchen and a dining room highlighted by the custom-made burned wood tables and walls that Bassett said was designed to elicit a bamboo motif.
