Welcome to May Day!

May Day is a spring holiday in many cultures, and a national holiday in many European countries. It stemmed from ancient celebrations which included Floralia, a Roman festival honoring the flower goddess Flora; Walpurgis Night, which was celebrated by Germanic countries; Beltane, a Gaelic holiday; and Anthesteria, a Greek festival. In some European pagan cultures, it was seen as the first day of summer, while the summer solstice was celebrated as Midsummer. Celebrants would get up early and gather flowers and branches to decorate their houses with.

As Europe became more Christianized, May Day became more of a secular celebration. It eventually spread to North America as well. Celebrations have included dancing around a maypole and crowning a May Queen. Many towns in the United Kingdom still crown a May Queen. The making of May garlands was done, and some still do this today. Traditionally, children would go door to door and beg while wearing the garlands. Many people also washed their faces with May dew, believing that doing so would bring back beauty. For a time, the giving of May baskets was popular. These small baskets of flowers or sweets were left anonymously on the doorsteps of neighbors, and then the doorbell was rung and the giver would run away. This has been done less and less since the late twentieth century.

Washington coach Mike Hopkins reportedly turned down interview at UCLA this offseason (PS; Waters)

University of Washington men’s basketball coach Mike Hopkins reportedly turned down an interview at UCLA during the school’s coaching search this offseason, a detail that was included in a fascinating story written on Tuesday by The Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch.

The note about Hopkins was only a small tidbit in a story that was an interesting look at one the most talked-about coaching search of the offseason. It’s worth reading for the details beyond Hopkins.

In terms of the former Syracuse assistant coach, the story cited text messages sent from UCLA’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations Josh Rebholz to a group of major donors.

Bolch wrote: The Bruins’ list of candidates was further winnowed, Rebholz wrote, when other coaches such as Washington’s Mike Hopkins, Purdue’s Matt Painter and Iowa State’s Steve Prohm declined to be interviewed regardless of our ability to pay more than we ever have, a commitment to charter as a team, and increase to assistant salary pool, etc. Very disheartening to not even have a chance with ‘Tier II’ guys.

The Tier I candidates, identified earlier in the story, included Kentucky’s John Calipari, Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Villanova coach Jay Wright, Oklahoma City Thunder coach Billy Donovan, Gonzaga’s Mark Few and Virginia’s Tony Bennett.

Syracuse Basketball: No combine invite for Tyus Battle is a sad sign (itlh; Adler)

Word on Tuesday morning that former Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle will not get an invite to the NBA Combine is disappointing, yet unsurprising.
A year ago, Tyus Battle, the clutch shot-making wing for the Syracuse basketball squad, entered his name into the 2018 NBA Draft and received an invitation to the NBA Combine.

He went through the draft process and ultimately decided to return to the Hill for his junior campaign. While I’m 100 percent speculating, I imagine that Battle came back to Central New York to both improve his draft stock, as well as lead the ‘Cuse on a deep March Madness run.

Unfortunately, neither of those objectives truly occurred. During the 2018-19 term, the 6-foot-6 Battle generated about 17 points per contest and got named to the All-ACC third unit. SU, despite some lofty pre-season expectations, managed 20 wins but got bounced by Baylor in the 2019 NCAA Tournament’s first round.

Once this past stanza concluded, Battle revealed that he would leave the Orange, and he recently signed on with the Roc Nation Sports agency in preparation for this June’s NBA Draft. I’m a huge fan of Battle, as I think he’s not only quite talented, but also a selfless guy who excels in the classroom and possesses integrity. I’m rooting for him to have a lengthy and successful professional tenure.

Jim Boeheim featured on Golf Channel's visit to Turning Stone Resort Casino (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Little do most people know, or perhaps do know, Jim Boeheim has a long history with the sport of golf.

After all, he once served as the head varsity golf coach at Syracuse University.

These days he's known as the National Basketball Hall of Fame college basketball coach for the Orange, entering his 44th year roaming the sidelines in Central New York.

Boeheim's golf expertise was put to the test in the Golf Channel's latest episode of Golf Advisor Round Trip, which aired Tuesday night on national television.

Alongside host Matt Ginella, Boeheim discussed his love for the golf courses and world class amenities at the Turning Stone Resort Casino, while also sharing a laugh about his future in coaching.

"You look at a guy like Warren Buffett," Boeheim responded when asked why he's still coaching well into his 70's. "He seems to be doing pretty good. His stock is up 4,000 percent this year. He's, what, 90-years-old? Why do we have to stop working?"

Duke Basketball: Jayson Tatum says he was very close to a return to Duke (balldurham.com; Connelly)

In an interview with Sirius XM, former Duke Basketball star Jayson Tatum admitted that he was close to a return to Duke for his sophomore season.

Jayson Tatum, almost, made the decision to return to Duke for his sophomore year, he said in an interview on Monday afternoon on Sirius XM.

In a spot on College Sports Radio with Chris Spatola and Aaron Taylor, Tatum explained that it was his life long dream to play in the NBA and when he first got down to Duke, he only expected to stay in Durham for one season, but once the five-star recruit experienced life as a college student at Duke, he admitted that the choice was not easy to head to the NBA.

Celtics F @jaytatum0 explained why deciding to turn pro wasn't easy on #ACCRadio with @Chris_Spatola & @AaronTaylorCFB.

He also told us which city he'd want to be traded to (don't worry #Celtics fans... they don't have a team. #TheBrotherhood @DukeMBB

One of the driving forces for Tatum in his near return to Durham was not winning a National Championship and getting the chance to play for Mike Krzyzewski once again.

Tatum said that while it was a touch choice, Coach K fully supported his decision and still checks up on him once in a while to see how he’s doing.
