Syracuse Basketball: Prioritizing star recruit Andre Jackson is right move (itlh; Adler)

Andre Jackson, a massive target for Syracuse basketball in the 2020 class, said his recent visit to the Central New York campus proved positive.

Given the Syracuse basketball squad’s completely full cadre of 13 scholarship players heading into the 2019-20 campaign, with no seniors on its roster, I penned an article about a week ago that spoke to the importance of precision and prudent selectivity for the ‘Cuse in its search for recruits in the 2020 class.

One of the Orange’s main focuses in that class, 6-foot-6 wing Andre Jackson out of The Albany Academy in Albany, N.Y., traveled to the Hill this past weekend for an official visit. Per Syracuse.com and several other media outlets, the four-star Jackson enjoyed his trip to SU.

“I had a fun weekend and got a chance to get to know some of the players on the team, which was nice,” he told Syracuse.com. “I also got the opportunity to check out the campus and academic centers, which surprised me. Also got a chance to shoot around and play with some of the guys.”

According to the 247Sports Web site, Jackson holds scholarship offers from more than a dozen schools. The Syracuse.com piece quoted him as saying that he plans to pick a program “maybe towards the end of summer,” with the story adding that Jackson has previously said the ‘Cuse, former Big East Conference foe Connecticut and Iowa “have recruited him the hardest and the longest.”

Offseason Report: Buddy Boeheim (247sports.com; McAllister)

Buddy Boeheim came to Syracuse with both fan fare and doubts. Many were excited about having the Hall of Fame head coach's son on the roster, while others felt he was not good enough and was only there due to his last name. However, Buddy got better as the season went along and became a key contributor off the bench down the stretch. It was a solid true freshman campaign for the sharp shooting guard, who will look to build on that for an even bigger role next year.

2018-19 ROLE
Syracuse needed outside shooting in 2018-19. It was one of if not the biggest, most glaring weakness on the team. Having shooters on the floor would open the lane for players like Tyus Battle and Frank Howard, who were at their best attacking the rim. Through the first 13 games of the season, Buddy's role was very inconsistent. Meaning he did not see the court regularly, as his minutes significantly varied game to game.

Syracuse Basketball: Elijah Hughes needs to become an all-around player (itlh; Esden Jr)

2018-19 was an interesting year for Syracuse basketball forward Elijah Hughes. The goal for 2019-20 has to center around becoming an all-around player.

Syracuse basketball fans got their first taste of Elijah Hughes in the 2018-19 season. After transferring over from East Carolina, Hughes had to sit out the 2017-18 season.

During that time he improved his conditioning and the intricacies of his game. Hughes was allowed to practice with the team, but he couldn’t play in any games. So in those opportunities where Elijah squared up with the likes of Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett in practice, those were his games and he gave it his all.

Former coaches and assistants raved about his work ethic and what he could be for the Orange in 2018-19. Looking back on last season, it was a mixed bag for Elijah:

Hughes nearly quintupled his games started from his days at East Carolina.
He dramatically increased his field goal percentage from 35 percent to 42 percent.
Also, his three-point percentage increased from 27 percent to 37 percent.
But focusing the lens solely on what he did last season for the Orange:

In his 34 games played, only nine times did he not score in double figures.
Consistency was an issue throughout the season. In one game Hughes would be shooting crazy good then there were days where he couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.
So what is Hughes trying to fix this offseason for 2018-19? NCAA College Basketball Reporter Andy Katz asked that very question to Hughes this week on Twitter:
“It’s really about working on my all-around game. Playing off the dribble and really just making plays. Nothing too specific, just the goal is to be a better all-around player.”

House of the Week: Whitney Lofts with original 1920′s details (PS; Hernandez)

When Ryan Benz and his wife Leigh Ann were looking to move back to Syracuse after being in New York City, they wanted to invest in the city and be part of what they called a kind of ‘downtown renaissance.’

Along with business partner Steve Case, they looked at several buildings, but felt the revival of South Salina Street was where they wanted to be amidst the new Redhouse Arts Center, the renovations to the Landmark Theatre and more.

Originally the team had only looked at 321 South Salina St., but in the end bought both 321 and 323 to provide two points of egress. The building now named the Whitney Lofts pays homage to the former Whitney Department store, which was part of the bygone days of Syracuse’s shopping district in the 1950′s and 1960′s on South Salina Street. The building at 321 South Salina St. was also home to Park & Brannock Shoe Company where The Brannock Device, used to measure shoe size, was invented.

Lauren DiMarco, interior designer from Juniper & Ivy Designs, said the intent of this project was to merge two buildings into one. One building had more of an industrial, raw feel with exposed steel beams and 16 foot ceilings and the other side of the building had original tin ceilings with one-of-a-kind detail and maple hardwood floors. With this in mind, units were designed in two different ways. Featured here is what DiMarco calls the ‘industrial’ side with black accent walls, exposed steel beams, and bolder colors. The other side has been decorated with more pastel and neutral colors to accommodate different tastes.
