Welcome to Frog Jumping Day!

Frog Jumping Day is dedicated to frogs that jump, to jumping like a frog, to frog jumping contests, and Mark Twain's short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," which appears to be the inspiration for the day.

The short story was originally published as "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog," and appeared in The New York Saturday Press on November 18, 1865. It was Twain's first important work: it went on to appear in more magazines and newspapers and brought him to national attention. It was published as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" in The Californian on December 16, 1865—it is under this title that it most frequently appears today. It has also gone by the name "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." The story appeared in Twain's first book, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches, a compilation of 27 short stories that had previously appeared in newspapers and magazines, that was published in 1867.

Is Syracuse basketball legend Billy Gabor, 97, the oldest former NBA player? (PS; Waters)

Bill Gabor, the Syracuse University basketball legend, receives at least one phone call a day from his son.

“He still talks to me about the NBA game or the Syracuse game the night before,’’ Bill Gabor, the Madison County district attorney, said of his father who has lived in Jupiter, Fla., for the past 25 years. “I alert him as to when the games are on and we analyze them afterwards.’’

On Monday, the younger Gabor will make a special phone call, wishing his dad a happy 97th birthday.

Gabor, played at Syracuse during the 1942-43, 1945-46, 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons. His career was interrupted by World War II when he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Nicknamed "The Bullet'' due to his exceptional speed, Gabor then went on to play in the NBA for six years; all of them with the Syracuse Nationals.

A representative for the NBA’s Retired Players Association said Gabor is believed to be the oldest living former NBA player.

Gabor averaged 9.8 points per game during his NBA career. He was named to the league’s All-Star team in 1953 and was a member of the Nationals’ 1955 championship team.

California Dreamin’, Part I (DBR; Sumner)

We all know about California, home of Hollywood, California girls, hearts left in San Francisco.

But Duke basketball’s relationship with California has not always been the stuff of Hollywood dreams. Sometimes. But not always. And not lately.

Californian Boogie Ellis’ recent de-commitment is the latest in a series of short-lived relationships between the Golden State and the Blue Devils.

And it did prompt some speculation about Californians being different from normal folks. I’m not qualified to opine on that subject and the residents of California do have to deal with such natural disasters as earthquakes, fires, avalanches and the Oakland Raiders, the latter for not much longer.

So, maybe we should cut them some slack.

Full disclosure. I do not have the data base to say definitively that pre-ACC Duke basketball never had a California player. I can’t think of any. Duke started playing as Trinity College back in 1908 and my memory doesn’t go back that far. But it’s a long way from California to Durham, especially when you had to take a train.

For the purpose of this survey, let’s assume that Duke basketball started around 1950.

But even then it took awhile for Duke to mine California gold.

Best of CNY: Help us find the best dessert in Central New York (PS; Miller)

While scouring Central New York for the best chicken riggies and the best Italian restaurant over the past few months, we finished each meal with some brilliant desserts. So it only makes sense that our next quest should be to, well, actually find the best dessert in CNY restaurants. We are looking for housemade desserts or those made locally especially for a restaurant.

But we need your help.

Nominate your favorite spot for dessert in the comment section of this story or on our Facebook page. You can also tweet us @syracusedotcom, using the #BestOfCNY hashtag. We don’t accept nominations by email, phone, letter or Facebook message.

Please be sure to include the name and location of your favorite dessert. You can also tell us which dessert is your favorite meal-ender. National chains are not eligible, but local chains are acceptable.

Only restaurants in Onondaga, Oneida, Oswego, Cayuga, Seneca, Cortland, Tompkins and Madison counties are eligible to be nominated.
