Welcome to Nylon Stockings Day!
Some holidays are there to celebrate events of momentous cultural significance; others are there to remind us of the little things in life. Nylon Stockings Day is very much in the second category, and a particularly quirky holiday it is too.
As might be guessed from the name, this is a day in which women across the world can celebrate stockings – a major part of day-to-day fashion for many women.
The stocking has come to represent a large number of different concepts, from femininity to sexuality, and so we should not be too surprised to find that there are people willing to celebrate it. Granted, setting an entire day aside may seem an excessive measure to some people, but that is business as usual with holidays – what is just another date on the calendar to one person may be a red-letter day to another.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange’s latest international recruits are enthralling (itlh; Weisleder)
Syracuse Basketball’s newest international recruits of Quincy Guerrier and Jesse Edwards are timely, and perhaps Jim Boeheim’s most intriguing yet.
Since assuming the Syracuse basketball head coaching job 43 years ago, Jim Boeheim‘s recruiting exploits have been deemed ambiguous year after year. The Hall-of-Famer has a knack for recruiting unknown talents from locations that extend beyond his own native soil and grooming them into dependable players at both the collegiate level, and for many, the professional basketball that follows it.
Boeheim’s prowess as a college basketball mastermind is supported by his ability to regularly defeat powerhouse programs, especially during the NCAA Tournament, with ‘seemingly’ less polished talent.
A large portion of Syracuse’s consistency since the 1980s has been the product of their international talent from just north of the border, and from up to 6700 km overseas. Toronto’s Leo Rautins (1980-1983), Portugal’s Rony Seikaly (1984-1988), Lithuania’s Marius Janulis (1994-1998), and Montreal’s Kris Joseph (2008-2012) are some of the many international players that kept SU potent during its 34-year stint in the Big East Conference.
Since then, Brampton Ontario’s Tyler Ennis and Mississauga Ontario’s Oshae Brissett have continued the trend of international dominance at Syracuse during what has been a seamless transition into the ACC over the last six years.
SU enters the 2019-2020 season with just one of its five recruits holding a spot on ESPN’s top-100 recruits, shooting guard Brycen Goodine. Two of the other four recruits, Quincy Guerrier (small forward, Montreal, Quebec) and Jesse Edwards (center, Netherlands), are traveling 400 and 5,900 km from their homes to continue Boeheim’s uniform tradition of having international talent in Central New York.

Syracuse Basketball: Oshae Brissett earns NBA Combine invite (itlh.com; Adler)
Some juicy news for Syracuse basketball player Oshae Brissett, who has reportedly earned a coveted invitation to the NBA Combine.
Oshae Brissett, a sophomore forward with the Syracuse basketball squad who is testing the NBA Draft process, apparently has secured an invite to the NBA Combine.
Per a tweet on Tuesday evening from ESPN analyst and reporter Jonathan Givony, Brissett is among 10 guys who participated in the G-League Elite Camp and, based on their performances at that event, have gotten the nod to compete at the NBA Combine.
The combine, which features five-on-five games as well as shooting, strength and agility drills, will occur in Chicago on May 16 and 17. As we recently reported, former Orange commit Darius Bazley is one of 66 guys previously announced by the NBA as expected to attend its combine.

Former Syracuse basketball player Tyus Battle will not receive a second look from NBA Insiders at the NBA Combine. Here are the details.
In the month of May for the first time ever there were two official NBA Combines for former collegiate athletes to participate in.
Tyus Battle got to participate in the G-League Elite Camp which took place over the last several days. Multiple NBA sources revealed that a select amount of players who impressed at this Elite Camp would be invited to stay in the city of Chicago to participate in the annual NBA Combine.
The Elite Camp festivities wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon and a few short hours later ESPN NBA Draft Analyst Jonathan Givony revealed the 10 players who were lucky enough to earn their way into the NBA Combine which takes place from May 15th through the 19th at Quest Multisport in Chicago:

The 2019 NBA Combine takes place this week up in Chicago. Over 20 percent of the players invited to participate in this year’s event (14) played in the ACC last season. Most of those guys have already committed to staying in the draft; Jordan Nwora of Louisville is the one prospect that’s left the door for a possible return open.
Other ACC players received G League Elite Camp invitations, but could also decide to return to college, too. Virginia’s Mamadi Diakite is a prime example of this — along with Oshae Brissett of Syracuse and Duke’s Javin DeLaurier. There are also prospects, like NC State’s Markell Johnson, who didn’t receive an invite to either event, but are testing the waters and working out with teams.
For this exercise, though, we will look at one of the top under-the-radar draft prospects in the country, one that we know will be back in the ACC for the 2019-20 season — Florida State’s Devin Vassell.

On the surface, Vassell’s numbers don’t exactly pop. That’s mostly because Vassell, as a freshman, played less than 11 minutes per contest in a crowded wing rotation: 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. One can easily expect that to change in the 2019-20 season, though, especially with Terance Mann (1,174 minutes) and Mfiondu Kabengele (27.5 percent usage rate) off to the NBA — along with the departures of PJ Savoy, Phil Cofer and David Nichols.
That’s a lot of touches, possessions and minutes — and experience — that just left town. This means two guys with serious NBA potential — Trent Forrest and Devin Vassell — will get a full season together to showcase what they have to offer to NBA teams. (MJ Walker will factor into this equation, too.)

Syracuse burger repeats as best in New York in state beef council search (PS; Pucci)
For the second straight year, a Syracuse pub is home to best burger in New York.
Ale 'n' Angus Pub won the New York Beef Council’s burger competition with its Beef on Weck burger—a griddled burger topped with sliced roast beef, cheddar cheese and horseradish sauce on a caraway seed and sea salt kummelwick roll.
After a voting snafu, all 10 semifinalists were invited to a final cook-off, held Monday at Onondaga Community College. Of those, eight restaurants participated. The winning burger was determined by a blind taste test by a panel of five judges.
Ale 'n' Angus Pub, located at 238 Harrison St., across from the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, is owned by father and son Randy and Matt Beach. After winning the same contest in 2018 with its Power Play burger—a half-pound patty topped with shaved prime rib, American cheese, lettuce and tomato served on a New York Bakery soft kaiser roll—the Beaches were told they would need to enter a new burger for the 2019 competition.
“It was like telling the Golden State Warriors they can’t compete for the NBA championship every year,” Matt Beach said.
But they took on the challenge of formulating a new burger. They turned to that same time-tested strategy of piling sliced beef on top of more beef and created a burger that they both said they like even better than the Power Play. After being introduced as a weekly special, the beef on weck burger is now a permanent menu item at the restaurant.
