Welcome to Asparagus Day!

Asparagus, from the genus family Asparagaceae, is made up of more than 200 species. The most common and economically important is garden asparagus, which is cultivated to be eaten, and is celebrated today! It is usually green with a purple-tinged top, but white asparagus is another common variety and is often grown in Europe. In particular, in France's Argenteuil, asparagus is grown underground so that chlorophyll does not develop. This white asparagus is thick, is smoother than green types, and is known for its tenderness and delicate flavor. There is also a purple variety of asparagus called viola.

Asparagus was a delicacy of the ancient Romans and Greeks, and its name comes from the Greek word "asparagos." The name first appeared in print in English around 1000 CE. Native to the Eastern Hemisphere, it is not known exactly when it came to America; there is record of it growing in New Jersey by at least 1740. It was being grown in California by the 1850s, and 70 percent of the national crop is still grown there.

Syracuse Basketball: 2020 SU target Woody Newton to reveal next week (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad is acting in a selective manner as it pertains to its 2020 class, and one of its primary prospects is close to announcing.

With the decision by Oshae Brissett to forgo his remaining two years of eligibility on the Syracuse basketball team, that could open up one scholarship, at a minimum, for the program’s 2020 class.

As we’ve noted of late, SU had 13 scholarship guys on its roster heading into the 2019-20 campaign, including no seniors, so that meant technically the ‘Cuse didn’t have a schollie available for the following stanza.

Brissett’s decision changes that, and it’s certainly feasible that additional scholarships could surface, should any other current players elect to transfer prior to the 2020-21 term or declare early for the NBA Draft. It’s also a possibility that rising sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim, son of head coach Jim Boeheim, could theoretically give back his scholarship.

Regardless, with at least one schollie likely in tow, Syracuse coaches are honing in on a handful of studs in the 2020 class, and I imagine that four-star power forward Woody Newton is among those main targets.

The 6-foot-8 Newton, from Mt. Zion Prep in Lanham, Md., near Washington, D.C., will disclose his collegiate destination on Tuesday, May 28, per his Twitter page.

Former NBA Scout on Oshae Brissett and Quincy Guerrier’s Games – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; podcast; Leonard)

Wes Brown, who writes for NBAprospects.com, one of the top Canadian prospects resources out there for coaches of all levels, joined Tim Leonard on the FizzCast this week. Brown, who used to be an NBA scout, discussed what other NBA scouts were telling him about Brissett’s game that has allowed him to make such a rise and debated his chances of being a sustainable pro at the next level.

The Canadian prospects expert also broke down how Brissett’s game is really not all that much like incoming recruit Quincy Guerrier’s game, despite what others have suggested. Brown describes why he thinks Guerrier has a chance to make a big splash in his freshman year at Syracuse and potentially go one and done. We finished our chat with Brown by discussing the likelihood that Tyus Battle gets drafted.

You can listen to this FizzCast and all our other podcasts and FizzRadio’s on our Soundcloud page as well as through the iTunes Podcast App and/or Spotify. This interview and the rest of Fizz Radio will air, as it always does, on the Score1260 in Syracuse on Saturday from 9-10 am. Hope you enjoy!

Syracuse Basketball: Oshae Brissett departure leaves big hole in frontcourt (bustingbrackets.com,; Richards)

With Oshae Brissett entering the NBA Draft, Syracuse Basketball will have plenty to think about over the offseason, as they prepare for life without a star player.

On Tuesday, Syracuse Basketball’s Oshae Brissett announced that he would not be returning to the university for his junior season. Brissett had been invited to the NBA Draft Combine, and is said to have impressed many observers from around the league. He wrote a message to Orange Nation expressing his gratitude for the support over his time with the school, and confirmed that he would be remaining in the process for June’s draft. This message was posted to his personal social media accounts:

Syracuse will always be home

— Oshae Brissett (@Obrissy) May 21, 2019

Brissett was one of the Orange’s most influential players over the last two seasons. He helped Jim Boeheim‘s team reach the NCAA Tournament in both seasons, establishing a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2018. Along with the likes of Tyus Battle (Who also leaves Syracuse this offseason), Brissett made up a very talented roster, who could compete with anyone on any given night. They showed this by defeating the superstar Duke team 95-91, back in January.

Syracuse Basketball Legends Series: Inside look at Derrick Coleman (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Basketball has had multiple outstanding players in its history. ITLH will be looking back at the best of the best (legends) to suit up for SU. Up next: Derrick Coleman.
Syracuse basketball has a long storied history of success. All that success has been built off multiple talented athletes who gave it all when they put on an Orange uniform and put the team before themselves.

However, there are those who went above and beyond and were the best of the best and paved the way for those to follow in their footsteps. Those individuals we call legends.

Derrick Coleman is a prime example of a Syracuse legend. During his time at Syracuse he became arguably the best post player to ever play basketball for the Orange while also paving the way for future greats to follow: Hakim Warrick, Rakeem Christmas, Etan Thomas, and so many more. Its fair to say there may never be another Syracuse post-player like Coleman ever again as he really was one of a kind.

In high school, Coleman was a skinny left-handed kid from Detroit with some decent basketball skills already in his arsenal. Dave Bing, another Syracuse legend, seeing this, took it upon himself to mentor Coleman, according to Orangehoops.org and develop him into a player brimming with confidence and swagger. It was Bing’s confidence and belief in him that helped make him the player he would eventually become both at Syracuse and the NBA.

Coleman played four years at Syracuse University, each year becoming better than the one that came before it. In his time at Syracuse he was fortunate to play with multiple other Syracuse legends: Rony Seikaly, Stephen Thompson, Sherman Douglas, and Billy Owens. Though he was super talented in his own right, this much talent did make Coleman be more of a team player which ultimately helped his career in the long run.

TBT co-founder on Boeheim’s Army, Syracuse venue, financial incentives (PS; Ditota)

The Basketball Tournament is coming to Syracuse this summer. Games will be played on the OCC campus in July. Boeheim’s Army will have home-court advantage. Local fans curious about the $2 million winner-take-all tournament can now see for themselves what all the fuss is about.

Boeheim’s Army, soon to be in its fifth incarnation, will host one of eight regional sites for TBT this summer. Tickets for the Syracuse games, set for July 26-28, are already on sale. The Syracuse venue has sold $10,176 worth of tickets thus far, second to Wichita ($48,851). This year, in a new twist, teams can share some TBT wealth without actually winning the tournament. (More on that below.)

Overseas Elite, which has not lost a TBT game in four summers, is the defending champion. Kevin Belbey, the Boeheim’s Army general manager, has yet to post a roster to the team’s website. He has until June 1 to do so.

While we wait for roster details to emerge, I spoke with Dan Friel, the TBT co-founder, EVP of team relationships and General Counsel. Here’s our Wednesday conversation:

When did you guys come up with the idea for these eight host teams?

That’s something we’ve always thought about. We love home court type games. There’s nothing more sterile than a neutral court game. The idea of playing in a home court was one we planted in 2014 in the championship game. We had the fans vote on where that game would be. And Team Barstool ran away with the voting against Notre Dame so the game was in Boston. We’ve kind of tinkered with this idea of host teams serving as an anchor for the regionals in these locations. Last year, what happened at VCU and what happened at Ohio State and what happened at Bradley was eye-opening to have these games played in front of home fans. Marquette was another one when they hosted the Big East pod.

UVA Basketball adds walk-on point guard Chase Coleman - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Virginia already had one 5-foot-9 point guard on its roster, and he’s turned out to be pretty good: Kihei Clark. On Wednesday evening, UVA landed another 5-foot-9 point guard: preferred walk-on Chase Coleman.

Coleman is an in-state recruit, who hails from Norfolk; as a senior he helped lead Maury High School to a state championship. It was the program’s first state title since 1927. He elected to walk-on at Virginia over playing for nearby Hampton.

Chase Coleman, wearing number 1, led Maury to its first state title in 92 years, now he'll be joining the National Champion UVA Cavaliers as a preferred walk-on. He's one of the most mature high school players I've ever covered. @WAVY_News pic.twitter.com/2VZYxUfgty

— Brian Parsons (@bpar73) May 23, 2019

Matt Coleman, who just finished up his sophomore season with Shaka Smart at Texas, is Chase’s older brother.

Tony Bennett’s 2019 recruiting class now sits at five, including Coleman and JUCO wing Tomas Woldetensae. Casey Morsell, a 4-star guard, is the headliner.

These are the 25 best BBQ restaurants in Upstate NY, ranked by Yelp for 2019 (PS; Alexson)

Slow-smoked brisket, mouth-watering pulled pork, ribs that melt in your mouth. It's barbecue time, and we've got the 2019 ranking of the best 25 places to get it in Upstate New York.
From famous local chains like Dinosaur BBQ to hidden roadside gems, if you love barbecue, you need to check out this list.

METHODOLOGY

This is a list of the best barbecue restaurants in Upstate New York according to Yelp.com. All the businesses on this list are in the "barbecue" category on Yelp. "Best" is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews, star rating for a business, length of time a business has been opened, among other things. Number of negative (1- and 2- star) reviews are also a significant factor, and may give a restaurant with fewer total reviews a higher ranking than a restaurant with the same star rating and a higher number of reviews.

69 5-star reviews
One customer says: "The menu has all of your bbq staples- your brisket, your pulled pork, your ribs, your chicken etc. but they go one step further with the pigken- it's a pork and chicken combo! You can try multiple meats in one go if you're feeling it with some of their entrees, which my husband always does because how can you choose? For sides, they've got you covered with fries, Mac and cheese, Mac salad, bbq beans, coleslaw, potato salad, apple sauce and they always a daily special side- on our trip it was mashed potatoes and gravy."

In my opinion, Coleman was the most talented player to ever put on a 'Cuse uniform. There was nothing he couldnt do , and at his size and length, there wasn't much you could do to stop him. Now in his day, bigs were not asked or expected to do as much handling, passing, and outside shooting as they are now...which actually limited his value to a degree. Had he been coming into school today, he'd be the best player in the last ten years.
