Welcome to Corn on the Cob Day!

There are six different kinds of maize, or corn, and one of them is sweet corn, the kind that is most often celebrated on Corn on the Cob Day. Corn was first domesticated by Indigenous peoples in southern Mexico thousands of years ago, and more corn is now produced around the world than wheat or rice, although not all of it is used for human consumption. Sweet corn is picked when the kernels are still soft, and it is cooked in many different ways. Most commonly it is boiled or steamed on a stove, roasted or grilled on a grill or in an oven, or microwaved. Many times skewers are put on both ends of the cob after the husk is removed so it can can more easily be held, and butter, salt, and pepper are common seasonings used on the corn. It can be a pretty healthy snack if it is not overloaded with butter and salt, as an ear of corn usually isn’t much more than 100 calories, and is high in fiber.

Oshae Brissett led Syracuse to an upset of Michigan State basketball at Little Caesars Arena back in March 2018.

He auditioned to suit up for his home games in the NBA to be in that same arena on Monday in Auburn Hills.

The 6-foot-8, 209-pound forward spoke after his pre-draft workout for the Detroit Pistons and vividly remembers the colors.

"How green it was the stands, but we had a small little section of orange," Brissett said. "We were still able to fight through and get the 'dub... You hear about March Madness, the "One Shining Moment" video at the end. Little things like that get everyone excited."

Brissett, the ESPN's No. 83 overall draft prospect, headlined Monday's group at the Pistons practice facility. The Mississauga, Ontario, averaged 12.4 points and 7.5 rebounds as a sophomore and participated in the NBA draft combine following an invite from G League Elite Camp.

"These type of things are more a mental test than any type of physical test," Brissett said. "If you're really able to push through, you change the process of the way you approach the game."

As a freshman, Brissett helped Syracuse to a pair of upsets in the NCAA tournament, including the 55-53 victory over third-seeded Michigan State to lead the 11th-seeded Orange to the Sweet 16. Brissett had 15 points and nine rebounds that day against the Spartans.

Syracuse Basketball: Carmelo Anthony considering 3 NBA teams for 2019 (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball legend Carmelo Anthony is considering 3 NBA teams for 2019. Here are all the details via Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson.

Carmelo Anthony is 35 years old, he has played for five different teams since 2017, hasn’t played in an NBA game since last November, and last won a National Championship for the Syracuse basketball squad 16 years ago. Is Melo ready to retire?

In the wise words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friends.

https://syracusefan.com/javascript:void(0)
NBA guru and insider Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson of the Scoop B Radio Network and Senior Columnist for Basketball Society joined The Manchild Show with Boy Green on Monday to share some updates on the polarizing former Orange star:

"I’ll add this, Carmelo Anthony, a guy that’s local to Syracuse y’all know him well. That situation out in LA would’ve worked in his favor had they gotten Anthony Davis. The Lakers are still working to get AD. Depending on what happens in LA and in New York City, you could see Melo either slide into a situation with the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Knicks, or the Los Angeles Lakers. Obviously, he lives in New York City and he’s friends with LeBron James, but what happens with those teams during free agency depends on where Melo lands this Summer. I don’t think retirement is looming as much as people think, he still has a lot to offer.”
Carmelo has been considering all of his options this offseason:

  • He nearly joined the Los Angeles Lakers at the backend of the 2018-19 season, but when they seemed destined to miss the postseason and when the Anthony Davis situation fell apart, Melo pulled out.
  • General manager Kevin Belbey of Boeheim’s Army revealed that he reached outto the Carmelo camp to gauge his interest in joining his Syracuse brethren in their pursuit for The Basketball Tournament crown this offseason.
  • Retirement?
On that last point, we’ve heard several people close to Carmelo refute that emphatically. So the first person to really shut that down was Carmelo’s wife Lala on Instagram saying:

“You stay in the gym 24/7. A lot of people could learn from you because by now most would have been broken down. Happy Birthday to a real one. Don’t count him out just yet, there’s more to come. Happy Birthday Carmelo Anthony, love you always!”

Carmelo celebrated his 35th birthday last week. But you also heard it from Scoop B, he believes “Melo still has a lot to offer.”

Syracuse Basketball Legends Series: Inside look at Hakim Warrick (itlh; Peelman)

Syracuse Basketball has had so many great players in its long history. Inside the Loud House will be looking back at the best of the best to suit up for SU. Up next: 2003 National Championship Hero- Hakim Warrick.

Syracuse basketball probably is most recognized today because of its head coach Jim Boeheim and his legendary 2-3 zone defense. There’s good reason for that as he has never had a losing season in his tenure at Syracuse University and continues to bring out a talented and competitive squad every year.

However, a lot of Syracuse basketball’s deep history of success is not rooted in just Boeheim though; it’s rooted in the players that played here because they wanted to succeed: players like Hakim Warrick.

Syracuse basketball has had numerous stars, but very few have actually left a lasting impact that we will never forget. These players who led by example and gave it all for Syracuse we call legends. They pave the way for future athletes to rise and become stars in their own right. This series aims to introduce you to the best of the best to play basketball at Syracuse University.

Hakim Warrick is a name that clearly comes to mind as a Syracuse legend. Most fans immediately will jump right to the fact he had that unbelievable last-second block for the ages against Michael Lee in the national championship game in 2003 that essentially sealed the title for good.

However, there is so much more to Warrick’s career at Syracuse that makes him a legend other than just one play.

"Eric is an experienced post player with a winning mentality," said head coach Jeff Capel. "We like his athleticism and believe he has the tools to be an impact player in our program. He has shown the instincts, strength and effort level to be a high volume rebounder."

The 6-9, 250-pound forward has helped teams to three conference championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances and a record of 88-21 in his previous three seasons of collegiate competition.

Andy Katz singles out Ohio State vs. UNC for ACC/Big Ten Challenge (buckeyeswire.usatoday.com; Harrison)

The lineup for the annual grudge match between arguably the two best historical basketball conferences has been announced, and the Ohio State basketball team is a part of a big one in.

The Buckeyes take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Dean Dome on December 4th and it should be a compelling matchup of a young and talented Ohio State team vs. one of the blue-bloods of the sport. Ohio State has a lot of measuring stick non-conference games, but maybe none will be as important as the trip to Tobacco Road.

And BTN’s Andy Katz agrees. He has singled out the OSU vs. Carolina game as one of the top two matchups of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. He’s of course excited about the Duke and Michigan State tussle in East Lansing, but right behind that? Yep. The Buckeyes and Tar Heels.

It should be a good one, and we can hardly wait.

Mr. Cheapskate’s guide to Seneca Lake: 10 fun things to do for under $40 (PS; D'Imperio)

At almost 40 miles in length, Seneca Lake is the largest of the Finger Lakes. Mr. Cheapskate offers a “round-the-lake” guide to 10 fun and fascinating places to visit using only a tight budget of $50 for the day. Some of these places are tasty (wine and snacks at Belhurst Castle), fun (stock car racing in Dundee), beautiful (campus of Hobart and William Smith colleges) and definitely odd (the only drain tile museum in America). And we only used $37 of our $50.00 budget! Enjoy your trip around Seneca Lake. None of the 10 places is more than 5 miles from the lake.
The budget is for one person and does not include meals or extra purchases.

1. Glen Farm Sanctuary (Schuyler County)

An amazing “feel good” place. This 275-acre animal refuge is home to over 800 of Noah’s Ark’s finest. Nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York, the rolling green pastures of the Farm Sanctuary’s 275-acre shelter is home to more than 800 rescued farm animals including cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, goats and more. They have been rescued from harrowing circumstances and are now living the life in a safe environment. Spend the day and take an hour-long guided tour, browse the unique gift shop, learn more about farm animals in the Visitor Center, or enjoy a snack on the scenic deck.

2. "The Three Bears" (Seneca County)

You will not see the likes of these three buildings anywhere else in the country. The courthouse complex in this small village (population 602) consists of the only three brick Greek-Revival public buildings in America that are next to each other and in descending order. Because of the oddity of their look they have been given the names of Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby bear from big to small. They were built between 1845 and 1859. Bring your camera!

3. Stroll through historic Hobart and William Smith Colleges campus (Ontario County)
This famed college is perched on a bluff offering sweeping views of Seneca Lake. On a sunny afternoon there is no lovelier place in Geneva to stroll. Many of the buildings boast mid-19th century architecture, the landscaping is gorgeous and the whole campus exudes the impact of history. The college started as two separate schools, one for men (Hobart College) and one for women (William Smith College) but joined together in 1943. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from the college in 1849 becoming the first certified female doctor in the Northern Hemisphere. One of the educational halls bears her name. The Davis Gallery at Houghton House on campus hosts six revolving art exhibits annually.
