Welcome to National Apple Strudel Day!

Apple strudel, a type of layered pastry filled with apples, is celebrated today. Strudels are usually sweet, but they can be savory as well. Their name comes from the German word "strudel," which means "whirlpool" or "eddy." The oldest recipe for them dates to 1696, and they originated from similar pastries from the Middle East and Byzantine Empire. During the eighteenth century, they became popular in the Habsburg Empire. They are associated with Austrian cuisine, and common in all areas that once comprised Austria-Hungary.

National Apple Strudel Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 17th.

Syracuse Basketball: Jalen Carey, USA East Coast complete Greece trip (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball guard Jalen Carey, USA East Coast have completed their trip to Greece. Here are all the details and what that means for next season.

There were two planned foreign trips this Summer before the Syracuse basketball squad takes the floor officially for the 2019-20 season. We all knew about the group Italy trip in August, but the USA East Coast team traveling was a late development.

Over the weekend Syracuse basketball guard Jalen Carey and the USA East Coast team completed their three-game visit to Greece.

Well, you can’t get much better than perfect.

The squad went 3-0, in the first two games, they dominated by an average of 19 points per game. Although things weren’t that easy in their final contest as they barely scraped by with the 63-61 victory over the Greek Under-19 National team, per Syracuse.com.

The other Syracuse representation on the squad included: Adrian Autry who was the head coach of the USA East Coast squad and is the associate head coach at Syracuse. His staff also featured Syracuse basketball assistant Allen Griffin.

But make no mistake about it this trip’s primary objective was for Jalen Carey to get a headstart on his sophomore campaign.

NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Syracuse and UConn pursuing 2020 Noah Collier (bustingbrackets.com; Benjamin)

NCAA Basketball 3-star recruit Noah Collier is drawing interest serious interest from several Northeast and mid-Atlantic programs.

2020 prospect Noah Collier continues to garner attention from high-major programs despite remaining kind of under the radar. Although he was a late addition to NBPA Top 100 camp this week, the 6’8 forward has made quite an impression, per Ari Rosenfeld of ZAGSBLOG.

“It was spur of the moment. It was a 50/50 decision,” Collier told Rosenfeld. “I didn’t know if I wanted to come or not, and then I thought about it and felt that the late invite was something that I wanted to come down here and prove people wrong about and show them that I should have been here from the beginning, and I feel like I’ve been doing that throughout the entirety of the camp.”

The New Jersey native is all over the map in terms of rankings by the recruiting services. ESPN has Collier as a four-star recruit and the 62nd prospect in the class. However, 247Sports has him as a three-star prospect ranked 230th in the nation while 247Sports Composite has him at No. 165. He also has been given three stars by Rivals, who also doesn’t have him among their top 100 players.

Virginia Basketball: 2019 NBA Draft profile of Cavaliers guard Ty Jerome (bustingbrackets.com; Szymendera)

After three seasons in Charlottesville and a championship under Tony Bennett, what’s next for Virginia Basketball point guard Ty Jerome as he enters the NBA Draft?

Ty Jerome, a 6’5” Point Guard from New Rochelle, New York, completed three seasons at Virginia Basketball after entering the university as a top-50 recruit. Jerome improved incrementally each season, eventually becoming arguably the most consistent and reliable player on the Cavaliers‘ championship roster, including the likes of De’Andre Hunter and Kyle Guy.

In 37 games in his junior season, Jerome averaged 13.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists to 1.6 turnovers per game. He shot 39.9% from three this season and 39.2% over his three years. As strong as his stats are in their own right, it is important to also take into account Virginia’s incredibly slow pace.

Jerome’s numbers per 100 possessions this year were 26.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 10.6 assists. For context, those numbers are comparable to North Carolina freshman point guard and projected lottery pick Coby White, who averaged 29.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per 100 possessions in his first and only collegiate season.

Coming off a National Championships victory, it was inevitable for the Virginia Cavaliers to see their star guard declare for the draft. Jerome accomplished everything you could ask of a college player, and it is certainly exciting to see what he could bring to the table at the next level.

Virginia Tech star forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. has decided to leave the Hokies and play somewhere else as a graduate transfer. Fortunately for the Hokies, they probably won’t have to deal with him coming back and beating them in the ACC.

According to basketball writer Chris Dortch, Blackshear is set to make his final choice from three SEC teams: Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Earlier this month he paid a visit to Arkansas, though some have speculated he might go to Memphis.

Per Saturday Down South, Blackshear has yet to complete his visit to Kentucky. He was supposed to this past week, but might instead take the visit this coming week.

Don't buy the Kerry Blackshear/Memphis rumors. His final choices will come down to Texas A&M, Kentucky and Tennessee. One way or another, @Vol_Hoops fans will see him play in TBA. He's one of the most impactful players in the grad transfer era.

You could fit 17 Carrier Domes in the greenhouses going up in Central NY (PS; Moriarty)

A Canadian produce grower has started construction in Madison County on what will be one of the largest greenhouse complexes in North America.

Mastronardi Produce, a family-owned company headquartered in Kingsville, Ontario, is building the first of three 32-acre hydroponic greenhouses off West Elm Street in Oneida. It’s also planning to build a 14-acre greenhouse at the same location, giving the complex a total of 110 acres under glass.

To put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent footprint of four Destiny USA shopping malls or 17 Carrier Domes.

The first two greenhouses are scheduled to go into production later this year. One will grow berries in a joint venture with BerryWorld, a British berry grower. In the other, Green Empire Farms, a Mastronardi entity, will grow tomatoes.

Totaling 64 acres of growing area under glass, they represent the largest single greenhouse construction project in North America, according to Mastronardi.

Mastronardi sells produce to grocery stores in the Northeast and down the East Coast under the Sunset and Backyard Farms brands. Among the stores that carry its produce are Wegmans, Price Chopper, Tops and Walmart.
