NATIONAL-CHEESE-CURD-DAY-%E2%80%93-October-15-1024x512.png

Welcome to National Cheese Curd Day!
National Cheese Curd Day is observed annually on October 15. This is a day to enjoy the velvety goodness of cheese curds.

Cheese Curds are unique, funky, snackable little pieces of yellow or white Wisconsin cheddar cheese. Many restaurants coat and deep-fried them to a golden brown. When you bite into one, first expect a warm buttery crunch on the outside. The next delicious taste will be an ooey-gooey burst of dairyland delicacy on the inside.

What are they? Well, they’re a product of cheesemaking. Fresh ones squeak when you bite into them. Cheesemakers create different flavors to appease the growing number of people enjoying cheese curds.

What is Elijah Hughes’ Floor/Ceiling? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

As the season quickly approaches, it’s time to take a look at Syracuse’s top player this season. Elijah Hughes has been on the receiving end of high praise from Jim Boeheim. Recently Boeheim went on record saying Hughes will be a top five player in the ACC this season – at worst.

Besides being the focal point of the offense with Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, and Frank Howard gone, Hughes should benefit from a spacious offense. Unlike in year’s past where Battle and Howard were prone to pass the ball along the wing before hoisting a contested three, this team is full of quick shot takers. Buddy Boeheim, Joe Girard, and Brycen Goodine will space the floor – and if the Orange and White Game is any indication, this squad will run.

That style of play will benefit Hughes, who can gash defenses through lanes with his speed and hops. If he can’t get to the hoop, he’s a dangerous three shooter after putting down 37 percent of his triples last season.

Battle, Brissett, and Howard combined for around 33 shots per game last season, while Hughes averaged 11 attempts. While Boeheim’s attempts will increase, and the freshman will be responsible for some volume, Hughes could easily take around 17 shots per game. Throughout the season Hughes could easily average over 20 points per game – something only RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson of Duke accomplished a season ago.

Ceiling

The ceiling for Hughes is around 22 points per game, to go along with over five rebounds, three assists, and a block per game. Defenses won’t be able to hone in on Hughes thanks to the other elite shooters on this roster

Floor

Hughes’ floor has less to do with him, and more to do with the performance of young teammates around him. If Girard, Goodine, and Carey struggle, defenses can focus on Hughes. In this situation, his three point and field goal percentages take big hits. While he’ll still average 17 plus points, he could shoot under 35 percent from three and under 40 percent from the field. We know what Hughes and Boeheim can do, but the rest of the team is a huge question mark.

Syracuse Basketball players are often faced with the day to day questions of the season. Questions like w hat to expect on this play? How are you preparing for this team?

We decided to give them a break.

At the annual Syracuse Basketball Media Day, we asked players three Central New York questions:

How many 100-degree days have there been since the 1930's?

Have you ever tried salt potatoes?

Have you ever partaken in Central New York fall time activities such as checking out the changing leaves or apple picking?
Some of the answers may surprise you, but either way, you'll get to know fan favorites Marek Dolezaj, Elijah Hughes and Quincy Guerrier a little bit better!

Jim Boeheim readies for 44th season at Syracuse (tuscaloosanews.com; AP)

Jim Boeheim is set for his 44th season at Syracuse, and this time around the Orange got a jump start with a summer trip to Italy.
With five freshmen on board and lots of scoring to replace, that’s a plus.

“Everybody on the trip contributed and looked comfortable in what we were trying to do. We’re a little further ahead,” Boeheim said Friday at the team’s annual media day. “From that point of view, it was very helpful. But basically you still go back and do the same things that you would do every year. We’re a little further ahead. There’s personnel coming back, but there’s so many new guys you do a lot of teaching stuff that is new to them.”

Among those returning are forwards Elijah Hughes, Marek Dolezaj, Robert Braswell, and Bourama Sidibe, and guards Howard Washington, Buddy Boeheim — the coach’s youngest son — and Jalen Carey. Gone is a trio — Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett and Frank Howard — that played big minutes and accounted for 55 percent of the scoring on a team that averaged 69.7 points a game last season, as well as towering center Paschal Chukwu, who had 57 blocks.

“The difference with this year’s team and last year’s with Tyus, Frank, and Oshae you basically had three guys that were going to play 38 minutes,” Boeheim said. “And this year the only guy at this stage that looks like he would be playing that many minutes would be Elijah. I think there’s more flexibility in terms of the minutes.”

Hughes was second on the team in scoring last season at 13.7 points per game and led with 87 3-pointers, and he’ll be looked at to be one of the leaders.

“It’s what you come to Syracuse for. You want to be a leader. You want to be that guy that people look at to make plays,” Hughes said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Newcomers include forward Quincy Guerrier, centers John Bol Ajak and Jesse Edwards, and guards Joseph Girard III, New York state’s all-time leading scorer, and Brycen Goodine.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle shuts up haters with NBA contract (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle shut up all the haters on Monday with an NBA contract. Here are all the details and what it means.

There was a lot of squawking from Syracuse basketball fans, media, and analysts when Tyus Battle decided to forgo his senior season on the hill.

On Monday afternoon Battle signed an NBA contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now, who’s laughing?

After spending three record-breaking years on the hill, Battle decided to go pro.

This was the second straight year that Tyus had the opportunity to go through the NBA Draft process. Despite some impressive moments, Battle ultimately went unselected in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Shortly after it was revealed that he signed a contract with the T-Wolves.

Although strangely despite signing a deal, he didn’t appear on the team’s roster online nor did he play in any exhibition games for the team, per Syracuse.com.

The Drive For Five (And A Seat On The Bench) (DBR; Jacobs)

Last season saw quite a race to see who could accumulate the most fouls and, ultimately, disqualifications.

No one in particular emerged as the DQ leader. Instead, five different players each had six dismissals. Only two ACC players in the past five years, Clemson’s Elijah Thomas and Virginia Tech’s Kerry Blackshear, Jr., were forced to the bench more often in a season.

Two of the 2019 DQ leaders were among the seven who committed at least 100 fouls in 2019. Besides Javin DeLaurier of Duke (101) and the Wolfpack’s DJ Funderburk (105), that notable hacking assemblage included another returnee, UNC’s Garrison Brooks (104).

Gone but not forgotten are NC State’s Wyatt Walker (107), Miami’s Ebuka Izundu (100), and perennial fouling favorites and ’19 leaders Blackshear (114) and Thomas (112).

Along the way Izundu achieved the rare feat of accounting for every one of his team’s six disqualifications on the ’19 season.

Date set for vote on $65 million tax deal for big distribution center in Clay (PS; Moriarty)

The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency will vote at the end of the month on a tax deal that would save the developer of a large distribution center in Clay $65.6 million over 15 years.

The agency has scheduled a special meeting for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in meeting rooms 1/2/3 in the basement of the Oncenter at 800 S. State St. in Syracuse.

Dallas-based Trammell Crow Inc. has proposed a $280 million, 3.7-million-square-foot distribution center on 111 acres currently occupied by the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club at 7211 Morgan Road, a half-mile north of the village of Liverpool.

The company has said the center would employ 1,000 people and have an annual payroll of $30 million.

Under the tax deal the company is seeking, the company would receive tax exemptions totaling $65.6 million over 15 years. The savings would consist of $49 million in property taxes, $15 million in sales taxes on construction materials and $1.5 million in state mortgage recording tax.

For the first seven years of the deal, the property would receive a 90% exemption from any increased tax assessment attributable to the project. The exemption would decline 10 percentage points each year for the next eight years. After that, the project would be subject to full property taxes.
