Did you know Jim Boeheim was undefeated as a quarterback at Syracuse? (PS; Waters)

Jim Boeheim. Undefeated quarterback.

During Jim Boeheim’s three years as a varsity basketball player, Syracuse went 52-24. But on the intramural football field, Boeheim never suffered a loss.

As a graduate student at Syracuse from 1967 to 1969, Boeheim quarterbacked two different squads to a total of three intramural titles.

“Undefeated,’’ Boeheim said, recalling his days on the gridiron. “Three championships.’’

And when asked about his abilities as a quarterback, Boeheim replied, “I was the best ever.’’

Boeheim never played football in high school. Dick Blackwell, his basketball coach at Lyons (N.Y.) Central High School, had prohibited it.

Boeheim played basketball at Syracuse from 1963 to 1966, teaming with the legendary Dave Bing. His hoops career ended with a loss to Duke in the East Region finals of the 1966 NCAA tournament.

When he enrolled in graduate school, Boeheim became a residence assistant in Syracuse’s Sadler Hall. He became the quarterback for the dorm’s intramural football team.

“I invented an offense and it cannot be stopped by anybody,’’ Boeheim said. “We never even came close to losing.’’

Syracuse Basketball: Orange to battle LSU in the 2020 Gotham Classic (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad will duel with LSU, one of the SEC’s premier groups, as part of the 2020 Gotham Classic, according to Jon Rothstein.

The Syracuse basketball team is about three weeks from the commencement of its 2019-20 campaign, when the Orange hosts the defending NCAA champions, Virginia. However, there is a bit of exciting news to share about the stanza that will follow the upcoming one.

Jon Rothstein, a collegiate-hoops guru for CBS Sports, Sports Illustrated and WFAN, has sent out a tweet that the ‘Cuse will go toe to toe with LSU in the 2020 Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fun!

First and foremost, Syracuse facing off with the Tigers, out of the SEC, means that the Orange will continue to compete in New York City, which is vital from a brand-recognition standpoint, as well as from a recruiting perspective.

This year, to refresh everyone’s memory, the ‘Cuse will suit up in the 2019 NIT Season Tip-Off, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Syracuse will play Oklahoma State, then either Ole Miss or Penn State.

For a smidge of context, the 2019 Gotham Classic will feature fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Boston College, Saint Louis, Belmont, Eastern Washington and High Point.

Additionally, our beloved Orange participated in the initial Gotham Classic, back in 2012. In that event, the ‘Cuse, ranked No. 3 in the country at the time, beat Canisius, Detroit, and Alcorn State, before Syracuse got upset by Temple, 83-79.

ACC Basketball: Schedule's twist makes for interesting perspectives - College Hoops Watch (collegehoopswatch.com; Cross)

Three weeks from tonight and that’s it – the dawning of a new college basketball season. Three weeks from tonight – on opening night – games that could make a difference in an ACC team’s resume com March.

When the ACC went forward with the launch of the ACC Network, it needed a hook to garner fans’ early attention and an ACC schedule on Nov. 5 & 6, sans Duke is what was spawned. The Blue Devils will be in the Champions Classic in Chicago, matching up with Michigan State, but Coach Mike Krzyzewski had his usual candid perspective on scheduling all too meaningful ACC game on opening night.

“Our conference, with the network, 20 games comes at a good time, more content,” said Krzyzewski, “I think you’re coming closer to having a true champion, still like when we had a round-robin where you played everyone twice.”

It cuts out potentially meaningful intersectional matchups between ACC teams and other teams from across the top 7 or 8 conferences in the nation. However, no one really is against evolvement and adaptation in a conference that is a trend setter in not only college basketball, but across college athletics.

“I was here when it was 16, and then it went to 18, and boy, that’s two more quality games,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett says. “Now we’re at 20. You play in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, you play in these tournaments, so every game is a test. There’s such parity in college basketball.”

With Foundation Set, Pitt’s Sophomores Look to Take Next Step Under Capel | Pittsburgh Sports Now (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Northam)

A season ago, Pitt’s men’s basketball team was going to go as far as a trio of wide-eyed and inexperienced freshmen could take them.

Occasionally, they flourished, like in the Panthers’ upset of Florida State at home, or in their ACC tournament win over Boston College. Other times, they floundered, like in their embarrassing loss to Niagara and their overtime defeat at Wake Forest.

Jared Wilson-Frame — who has since graduated — had some big moments too, but whether Pitt won or loss in Jeff Capel’s first season at the helm was largely decided by the play of Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au’Diese Toney.
At Duke, Capel played a lot as a freshman, but he pointed out that there was much less pressure on him than there was for those three Panthers last season, because the Blue Devils could lean on a star veteran like Grant Hill. Pitt didn’t have that luxury.
And given the circumstances, Capel was impressed with how the freshmen trio dealt with the responsibilities bestowed on them.
“I thought they had outstanding freshmen seasons,” Capel said last week at the ACC’s Operation Basketball. “I played with I thought the best player in the country who was a senior, which is a rarity now… The reality of it is, that in order for us to have any chance of winning last year, they had to play well. That’s a different type of pressure than I experienced as a freshman. I thought they handled that very, very well because it can be overwhelming, especially this league.”

Miami Basketball Chris Lykes Preseason 2nd Team ACC, Canes 9th (Caneswarning.com; Strauzer)

The Miami Basketball team’s dynamic point guard, Chris Lykes was named to the preseason second-team All-ACC by the media this past Thursday. The Hurricanes were picked ninth in the ACC media poll.
After finishing the 2018-19 season as the 10th best scorer in the ACC, Miami basketball point guard Chris Lykes earned eighteen votes to named second-team preseason All-ACC. Lykes was eighth overall in the voting. Entering his junior year Lykes is poised to lead the Hurricanes to what is expected to be a resurgent year.

The injury decimated Miami basketball team finished a disappointing 12th place last season. At 5’7, Lykes has made a name for himself on the national stage as not only one of the toughest players to defend, given his quickness, but also has become a human highlight real. Last season, Lykes averaged 16.2 points per game.

Central NY is home to the best BBQ ribs in New York, according to Food Network (PS; Pucci)

The best barbecue ribs in New York can be found in Central New York, according to a new Food Network story.
The story, titled “The Best Ribs in Every State,” named Ray Brothers BBQ as the home to the best ribs in New York. The author recommended the quarter-rack of ribs with two sides and either the Carolina Gold sauce, made with homemade honey mustard with local honey, or the Bomb sauce, which features a boozy blend of beer, whiskey and Irish cream liqueur.

Brothers Tucker and Colin Ray opened the restaurant at 6474 State Route 20 in Bouckville, an area more known for its antiques than restaurants, in 2014. It quickly earned praise, including from syracuse.com | The Post-Standard restaurant critic Jane Woodman, who in her 2017 review, lauded the smoked chicken wings, tossed in the aforementioned Carolina Gold sauce, and “The Judge’s” Chicken, a half-chicken so tender and flavorful that it alone was worth the drive.
Just make sure to save room for a slice of maple bacon cheesecake.
