Welcome to Apple Cider Day!

Apple cider is everywhere this time of year—a mainstay of farmers markets and festivals. An adult version of the popular drink can also be ordered at the bar. This boozy cider is actually truest to the drink's earliest form, with roots dating back millennia.

Until relatively recent history, apples weren’t for eating. In fact, they were often too bitter to just munch on. Instead, for thousands of years, people would press them for the juice and leave it to ferment, letting it bubble away until it turned into boozy hard cider, according to the National Apple Museum.

Evidence of apple trees growing along the banks to the Nile River can be found dating back to about 1300 B.C., but there's no evidence that ancient Egyptians ever used them for cider. However, considering how much the Egyptians enjoyed beer (and that they were one of the first cultures to brew it), they did have some notion of the joys of fermenting alcoholic beverages.

Syracuse basketball: Are you ready for the Joe Girard show? (PS; Axe)

Joseph Girard III sure knows how to make a first impression.

I remember walking out of a stifling hot gym at Adirondack Community College last summer with my colleague Mike Waters thinking Girard would be a rock star if he picked Syracuse.

We had just watched Girard workout with fellow Glens Falls legend Jimmer Fredette and it was hard to tell apart the high school senior from the established pro basketball player at times. Hand to God.

Girard lit up the Carrier Dome on Saturday night in his debut in the Orange starting lineup, dropping 24 points on Seattle in what was a first impression for a lot of Syracuse fans of Girard.

Girard was certainly not a stranger to Syracuse basketball fans before he put on a show on Saturday night. They know he has the New York state scoring record with 4,763 career points. Most fans could probably tell you that number as easily as the passcode on their iPhone.

They had heard the stories of how Girard averaged roughly 50 points per game as a junior and a senior in leading Glens Falls High School to New York State Class B championships in both basketball and football last year.

Syracuse Basketball: Takeaways from emphatic win over Seattle (bustingbrackets.com; Richards)

On Saturday night, Syracuse Basketball recorded their second win of the season with an impressive win over Seattle. Here’s what to take away from the encounter.

Syracuse Basketball was able to get their second straight win last night. The Orange welcomed the Seattle Redhawks to the Carrier Dome in a game that they knew that they should be winning. Syracuse opened as sixteen point favorites, and it soon became clear why. After beginning the year extremely poorly on the offensive end, things began to step up in their win against Colgate. What we saw from Syracuse up until last night was far and away from being good enough to compete in the ACC – sloppy play, with dire shot selection and rushed offensive possessions. Last night, for the first time this season, this Orange side looked like a team that opponents shouldn’t underestimate.

The team’s two wins have come against opponents that they should be beating. That’s no secret. But if the Orange are going to do anything of note in the latter parts of the year, these are the wins that are going to matter. Last year, Syracuse scraped into the tournament with a 20-14 (10-8) record. After a season which saw the Orange drop so many games that they should have taken, it was the big wins that made them in with a shout for March. Perhaps, defeating Duke in their own backyard was the difference-maker. This season, the Orange have to win much more against the teams that they should be beating, as it’s going to be a tougher task to make the tournament this time around.

What Syracuse showed against Seattle was their ability to score well. Consistently putting up points is going to be the difference-maker all season long. This team’s toughness, grit, and perseverance on the defensive end goes without saying, it just needs to be matched on the opposite end of the floor. Syracuse got the win they needed in their third game of the season and here are the three main things to take away from it, as they continue to build towards a hopeful season:

Syracuse Basketball: Orange wings provide critical offensive balance (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball rode the Joe Girard III wave in besting Seattle on the Hill, but other Orange guys stepped up, which will prove vital in the long run.

The stellar debut of freshman Joe Girard III as the Syracuse basketball squad’s starting point guard is already well-documented, as he guided the Orange to a solid 89-67 success against Seattle from the Carrier Dome on Saturday night.

However, there are other positive attributes to the ‘Cuse offense that transpired in this encounter, and these facets provide an encouraging sign for Syracuse moving forward, particularly as the Orange will tackle a daunting portion of its non-conference slate in the near future.

For one, the ‘Cuse shot selection didn’t completely rely on attempts from downtown. Syracuse connected on 39 percent from 3-point land, hoisting up 23 tries. But the Orange also got to the charity stripe on 36 occasions, making a so-so 24, and it also hit on an excellent 59.6 percent from the field as a whole, going 28-of-47.

It’s no secret that Syracuse (2-1, 0-1) will look to spread the floor by utilizing an array of 3-point threats, and that’s fine, assuming that the Orange’s clip from beyond the arc is respectable. Yet for the ‘Cuse to truly shine on offense, it must maintain equity as far as field-goal attempts go. Otherwise, defenses will significantly focus their efforts on 3-point shooters and sag off players who are in the paint.

In its affair with the Redhawks (2-3), Syracuse performed admirably as it pertains to the harmony between striking from deep and executing close to the hoop. Girard, sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim and redshirt junior forward Elijah Hughes did their thing from 3-point range, but Hughes, junior forward Marek Dolezaj, freshman forward Quincy Guerrier and junior center Bourama Sidibe also recorded buckets in the post area.

Syracuse Basketball: ‘Jalen Carey will have an opportunity’ to get into the mix (itlh; Esden Jr)

With Joe Girard in, Jalen Carey was shoved out by the Syracuse basketball squad. Here’s how he can get back into the mix for the Orange in 2019-20.

We knew that Joe Girard was going to get his first career start vs Seattle on Saturday for the Syracuse basketball squad. What we didn’t know is what would happen with Jalen Carey.

In his first game riding the bench, Carey never came off of it.

Jalen went from starter to benchwarmer. So why didn’t Jim Boeheim play Carey in this game?

“Because we wanted to win the game.”

It was a brutal assessment by the head coach and his actions spoke even louder than his words.
Girard got the start, but he didn’t play the entire game, so who did Boeheim go to when he wanted to see another guard out there? Brycen Goodine.

Goodine ended up playing just under 14 minutes, he didn’t register a point, and committed three turnovers.

Want to be in a movie? ‘Gabriel’s Inferno’ needs extras for scene in Syracuse (PS; Herbert)

The first movie in a “Gabriel’s Inferno” trilogy is currently shooting n Syracuse, and you can be a part of it.

Producers are seeking extras for a Graduate Seminar Scene that will be filming on Monday. Applicants should be approximately 22-26 years old, diverse, and dressed in fall attire (plain colors, no logos, no polka dots, no plaid, no all black/white).

If interested and available, send your information to devjurkiewicz@gmail.com

“Gabriel’s Inferno” began shooting in Syracuse last week with Tosca Musk (“A Cinderella Christmas") directing. The script, written by Mary Pocrnic (“The Wedding Do Over”), is adapted from the best-selling erotic romance novels by Sylvain Reynard for the streaming service Passionflix.

The “Fifty Shades of Grey”-like plot follows Professor Gabriel Emerson as his “uninhibited life of pleasure" and a dark past collide when he meets sweet and innocent graduate student Julia Mitchell. Italian actor Giulio Berruti (“Monte Carlo," “The Lizzie McGuire Movie”) will play Gabriel and Austrlian actress Melanie Zanetti (“The Leisure Class,” “The Bureau of Magical Things”) will play Julia.

“Gabriel’s Inferno” will shoot over six weeks in Syracuse, including at the Greater Syracuse Soundstage (formerly known as the nano film hub in DeWitt). Two sequels, “Gabriel’s Rapture” and “Gabriel’s Redemption,” will also shoot in Syracuse next year over six-week periods.

“We’re loving it here. Everyone’s so nice,” Musk told syracuse.com.

“Gabriel’s Inferno” will be released on Passionflix in May 2020.

Musk, the sister of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, founded Passionflix in 2017 to focus on adaptations of romance novels. The streaming service is available at passionflix.com for $5.99 a month and includes titles like “Jane Eyre,” “A Farewell to Arms,” Marilyn Monroe’s “How to Marry a Millionaire,” and “Random Encounters,” starring Meghan Markle, plus Passionflix originals like “Driven,” “Hollywood Dirt” and “The Matchmaker’s Playbook."

Great story in The Athletic (subscription required) about Jimmy and Cornell.

On the road with Jim and Juli Boeheim: Jimmy Boeheim is Cornell’s best player, and his parents couldn’t be prouder
As Joyce has shared, story notes what a great student Jimmy is and how he's always prioritized academics over basketball. His comments make it clear Buddy worked harder than he did on the basketball court.

“I think I lost a lot of time in that window,” Jimmy says. “I think that’s part of the reason I’m a late bloomer. Buddy always had that work ethic.”

But Jimmy had that same drive in the classroom. He always scored As. He can’t pinpoint why, but high grades were a priority, and they still are. Last semester he posted a 3.9 GPA. His cumulative GPA is around 3.7. He’s pretty sure that’s the best on the team. This summer, he did an internship in downtown Syracuse with Morgan Stanley. He also lifted weights and got shots up … for four hours almost every day.

Also Guiterrez has been a great addition to the athletic and the subscription is definitely worth it for the all around coverage (which now has a lot more SU related articles).
