Welcome to Bake Cookies Day!

As the holiday season gets into full swing, family and friends will be gathering together to make memories, exchange gifts, and eat food. Desserts are a favorite this time of year, and one of the most common and versatile is the cookie. Bake Cookies Day gives everyone the opportunity to get their hands dirty in some dough and bake cookies, so they are prepared for their holiday get-togethers.

Sweet and small, cookies are flat or slightly-raised cakes that are eaten as desserts or snacks. The word "cookie," which first appeared in print in 1695, comes from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "little cake." In fact, cookies became popular in America on account of the Dutch, who brought them to the New World and baked them in their settlements. Not everyone has the same name for them, however. For example, in England they are often referred to as "biscuits," and in Scotland, a "cookie" is a small bun.

Can Syracuse basketball get things turned around? Chat today with Mike Waters and Donna Ditota (PS; Staff)

The Syracuse basketball team is coming off an 89-79 loss to hated rival Georgetown. The Orange has lost four of its last five games, all of the defeats by double-digits, and is off to its worst start since the 1968-69 season.

Is it time to panic? Are some of you way past panicking?

It’s time to talk it out and SU basketball writers Mike Waters and Donna Ditota will be here at noon Tuesday to answer your questions in the comments section below.

Here’s how this will work: You can start asking questions now in the comments section. We’re pre-moderating this so your questions won’t show up right away, but when Mike and Donna get here at noon, they’ll start answering your questions and they’ll show up then for a nice, clean conversation you can easily follow along with.

Syracuse vs. Oakland: Previewing the Grizzlies - Pickin' Splinters (pickinsplinters.com; Heyen)

Syracuse (5-5, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) begins a three-game homestand to close out nonconference play against Oakland (5-6) on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome. The Orange are coming off a 10-point loss at Georgetown, while the Grizzlies have dropped two-straight contests, most recently losing by 23 points to national power Michigan State.

Here’s a preview of Syracuse and Oakland ahead of Wednesday evening’s tip-off.

How to watch Syracuse vs. Oakland

Syracuse and Oakland tip off at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and will be televised on ESPNU.

All-time record

Syracuse leads the all-time series, 3-0. All three matchups have pitted long-time head coaches against each other. Jim Boeheim began head coaching Syracuse in 1976, while Oakland’s Greg Kampe became their head coach in 1984.

Last time they played

On Nov. 20, 2017, Syracuse moved to 4-0 with a win over Oakland. Four SU players scored in double figures: Tyus Battle (25), Frank Howard (18), Paschal Chuku (12) and Oshae Brissett (11).

Marek Dolezaj, one of the returners from that game, had a classic Dolezaj statline that night, finishing with eight rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists while fouling out and going scoreless.

30 Minutes in Orange Nation (espnsyracuse.com; radio; Steve & Seth)

Steve and Seth open the show talking about Syracuse basketball’s loss to Georgetown and where things stand for the Orange. Later, they go around the NFL. The podcast wraps up with more SU basketball talk.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange must rebound, literally and figuratively (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is on the tail end of its non-conference calendar, and up next for the Orange is a Wednesday clash with Oakland.

Syracuse basketball will attempt to get back on the right track when the Orange hosts Oakland this Wednesday night from the Carrier Dome.

The ‘Cuse (5-5) performed dreadfully on defense against Georgetown this past Saturday afternoon, as Syracuse got crushed on the glass, gave up an abundance of wide-open 3-pointers, and saw the Hoyas head to the charity stripe for what seemed like an endless amount of occasions in a 10-point loss.

Sure, the referees absolutely missed some calls, and that may have stung the Orange a tad. However, unless the ‘Cuse executes with much more consistency on both offense and in its 2-3 zone, all the poor officiating in the world won’t prevent Syracuse from continuing to pile on defeats.

I bleed Orange forever and ever, so this article isn’t about me ranting and raving on the current state of ‘Cuse hoops, and the team’s ongoing misfortunes. Syracuse is inexperienced and young, it is still ironing things out, we all have to exercise patience, and it’s entirely feasible that the Orange will fail to qualify for either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT at the conclusion of the 2019-20 campaign.

Yet, I repeat YET, the ‘Cuse is only one-third done with the regular stanza, so let’s see how the rest of the docket shakes out. Syracuse will have an opportunity to revert to the conquest column versus the Golden Grizzlies (5-6), a group that suits up in the Horizon League.

Orange Watch: It’s all ‘uniform’ except when it isn’t for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Last weekend’s loss to Georgetown marked the debut of a second set of uniforms for Syracuse basketball this season. In addition to the 1990s throwback look with a 2019 twist that the football team sported for the first time this past season, the basketball team brought back fond memories of the glory Big East days and a near-miss of a national championship in 1987. In the first of two scheduled games this season, the Orange wore a very similar look to their 1983-1994 jerseys that featured the prominent “Syracuse” name in script font.

Led by John Wildhack and his creative staff, there is one area that the athletic department has made a concerted effort to keep Orange Nation happy; the designs of the game uniforms worn by the football and basketball teams.

Wildhack (Newhouse Class of 1980) has always been as big a fan of his alma mater as anyone, and his professional career at ESPN blossomed during the same period of time that both SU programs made their 1980s assents. He’s led the projects that have brought that visual look back with modern contributions from within his department and apparel partner Nike.

When we briefly caught up with Wildhack, now in his fourth season, during pregame shooting practice prior to the Georgetown defeat, we complimented him on the throwback look, and the instant approval ratings on social media and elsewhere from a majority in Orange Nation.

“They do look pretty good, don’t they?” he proclaimed with a smile as he wondered over to talk with some of the FOX Sports network personnel broadcasting the game.

There’s only one problem, for the basketball team at least, when it breaks out one-off, alternate duds to the standard season ensemble; it results in a defeat.

The Georgetown loss was the fourth time SU has worn the script jerseys under Jim Boeheim, and the record is now 0-4:

  • Feb. 16, 2004-Notre Dame 82, Syracuse 72 (white script jerseys)
  • Feb. 19, 2014-Boston College 62, Syracuse 59 OT (orange script jerseys worn with blue shorts)
  • Dec. 17, 2017-Georgetown 78, Syracuse 71 (white script jerseys)
  • Dec. 14, 2019-Georgetown 89, Syracuse 79 (orange script jerseys)

https://accsports.com/acc-analytics/acc-basketball-power-rankings-vol-3-david-johnson/ (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Even at a slower point of the basketball schedule — during exams, prior to full conference chaos — things are still hectic. In an effort to sort things out, here are this week’s ACC Basketball Power Rankings.

No. 1 Louisville

Prior to the start of the season, one of the biggest question marks in the ACC centered on the point guard position at Louisville: who would replace Christen Cunningham? For most of the season, that’s been Darius Perry, with contributions from Fresh Kimble; however, it’s worth keeping an eye on David Johnson.

The freshman guard has played just 47 minutes this season, but he has great size and athletic bounce. Johnson had turnover issues against Eastern Kentucky, but he handles the ball confidently, and he as the ability to collapse a defense with a strong drive.

In the second half against EKU, Chris Mack ran with a lineup of Johnson, Ryan McMahon, Jordan Nwora, Dwayne Sutton and Malik Williams. (Williams is playing excellent basketball at the moment, by the way.) In the span of 2.5 minutes (+6), that five-man unit scored 10 points on four possessions (2-of-3 3PA).

Johnson has the potential to be a game-changer for the Cardinals. Louisville has serious talent in the frontcourt, but — with the exception of Dwayne Sutton — those guys are mostly finishers. That’s especially true of Nwora and Steven Enoch.

Jordan Nwora is a great player, obviously, but he struggles when tasked with creating his own shot (or for others). Louisville runs good half-court offense that helps to generate efficient looks; transition offense plays a role here, too. However, at the risk of getting too far ahead, if Johnson can generate open shots simply off of his dribble, then he becomes an important ceiling-raiser for Louisville.

No. 2 Duke

So far this season, Vernon Carey Jr. has been an absolute bull for Duke. The freshman big, who ranks 12th nationally in defensive rebound rate (30.3 percent), is one of three players in the country with a usage rate of 30 percent and an offensive rebound rate of 12 percent.

In the half court, Duke targets VCJ as much as possible — usually 1-5 pick-and-roll with Tre Jones or high-low action from a horns set.

Carey is built to run opponents over in the post, but there’s more to his interior offense. VCJ has quick feet and catches the ball ready to do damage. Carey can play above the rim, too, but if he’s able to drop that right shoulder, it’s all over.

Carey is also drawing fouls at an insane rate. According to KenPom, VCJ (76 FTA) draws 8.9 fouls per 40 minutes, which ranks No. 1 nationally. That’s a larger rate than other recent Duke post talents, too: Jahlil Okafor (5.3), Marvin Bagley (5.6) and Zion Williamson (5.9).

No. 3 Virginia

Mamadi Diakite is in some excellent company when it comes to blocking shots and shooting from the perimeter. Diakite is one of six players in the country — along with Obi Toppin and Kaleb Wesson, fellow NBA prospects — shooting above 40 percent on 3-pointers (minimum 20 3PA), with a block rate of five percent, too.

25 Things That Make Syracuse Great: So Much to Do (PS. Herbert)

“There’s nothing to do.”

If you’ve ever heard someone say those words in Syracuse, then there are three possibilities:

  1. They are new to Central New York and not yet aware of the many fun things to do in Syracuse, year-round.
  2. They are perpetual thieves of joy who derive pleasure from raining on everyone else’s parades.
  3. They are Pete Davidson.
We can’t help you if you’re Pete Davidson -- thank you, next -- but everyone else should know there’s so much to do in the Syracuse area, for all ages and interests. Life in the Salt City means you get the best of both worlds, as it’s a big enough city to draw national comedy and concert tours, and small enough to enjoy the little things, like apple-picking in the fall and food festivals in the summer.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the best things to do in Syracuse and Central New York:

NEW YORK STATE FAIR

The Great New York State Fair lives up to its name every year, drawing 1.3 million visitors over 13 days to the Syracuse area. The NYS Fair closes out the summer with a smorgasbord of fried food, carnival games, rides, concerts (free with admission), people-watching, and more.

But that’s not all: The Fairgrounds also host other events throughout the year, including the Winter Fair in February, fireworks in July, the NYS Chinese Lantern Festival, Syracuse Nationals, and more.

FESTIVALS

If you can’t get enough at the Fair, try any of the gajillion summer festivals in Central New York, including the Taste of Syracuse, Polish Fest, Saint Sophia’s Greek Cultural Fest, Festa Italiana, LaFayette Apple Festival, Syracuse Irish Festival, Jamesville Balloon Fest, Sterling Renaissance Festival, NYS Blues Fest, Oswego Harborfest, Oktoberfest, Skaneateles Festival, Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, the Madison-Bouckville Big Field Antiques Show, and several county fairs.

SPORTS

If you like sports, then you know there are two pro teams -- Syracuse Crunch for hockey fans and Syracuse Mets for baseball -- and plenty of future NBA and NFL stars in the Carrier Dome for Syracuse basketball and football games. There’s also a huge lacrosse following in Central New York; places to watch the World Cup and other soccer events (such as Wolff’s Biergarten, Kitty Hoynes, the Blarney Stone and Shaughnessy’s Pub); and racing events like Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway and NASCAR at Watkins Glen International.

You can also challenge yourself by playing recreational sports, including multiple 5Ks and road races (such as the Syracuse Ironman triathlon, Utica Boilermaker, and Corporate Challenge); adult kickball leagues; roller derby; flag football; bowling; ninja gyms; the Onondaga Regatta; and more. (Or just go and watch, cheer on your friends and family!)

If you love the great outdoors, then there’s fishing, hunting, hiking, sailing, skiing, snowmobiling, and more across Upstate New York.

MOVIES + POP CULTURE

Are you a cinema buff? The Syracuse International Film Festival draws filmmakers and documentarians from around the world every October; the Salt City Horror Fest celebrates scary movies every April; and classic movies often return to the big screen at theaters like the Palace in Eastwood, the Landmark in Syracuse, and the Auburn Public Theater. You can also get the IMAX experience at Destiny USA’s Regal theater and the MOST downtown, get beer and a meal with your show at the Movie Tavern, or enjoy drive-in theaters all summer at the Midway in Minetto and the Finger Lakes Drive-In in Auburn.
