Welcome to Thomas Paine Day!

Freethinkers Day, also known as Thomas Paine Day, celebrates the life and work of Thomas Paine, who was born on today's date in 1737. The day not only educates the public about Paine's work but also about freethinking, a concept that his work was often imbued with, which rejects arbitrary authority and puts reason and logic before faith. The holiday began being observed in the 1990s, when The Truth Seeker magazine started holding the day on Paine's birthday, in an effort to educate the public of his importance to the history of freedom and liberty. They said the day could be celebrated by giving and displaying a white rose with thorns, which symbolizes beauty, purity, and fragility, but also danger, on account of the thorn. The Thomas Paine Foundation also began celebrating Paine's birthday in the 1990s, although they proclaimed a separate holiday, Thomas Paine Day, to take place on June 8, the anniversary of his death.

Thomas Paine was a freethinker whose works inspired people to fight for social, political, and economic advancement. He was an early proponent for universal human rights and for the end of slavery. Writing during the Age of Enlightenment, some of his books, pamphlets, and essays helped establish a philosophical foundation for the American Revolution. His most widely known works include Common Sense, Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason.

Big Mack Attack: SU loses to Clemson 71-70 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; Axe)

It had to end.

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team’s five-game winning streak was a fun ride and checked a lot of needed boxes for a team that needs to take care of business as much as possible to get back in the 2020 NCAA Tournament conversation.

Tuesday night was just not meant to be.

Syracuse lost 71-70 to the Clemson Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum in another nail-biter. Cardiac 'Cuse is back as Syracuse’s last four games have been decided by a total of 13 points.

The breaks went with Clemson this time as a last-second shot by Syracuse’s Elijah Hughes, set up with a lengthy official review to determine how much time was left on the clock after a Tigers pass went out of bounds, was way off the mark.

What’s the difference between 1.4 seconds on the clock vs. 0.9 seconds? Apparently enough for the Tigers to squeak out a win.

Syracuse now sets its sights on No. 9 Duke, who were 79-67 victors over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Saturday’s game is the first of three big Quad 1 opportunities for the Orange on the February ACC schedule.

Mack, Trapp Shine as Clemson Upends Syracuse (clemsontigers.com)

Winning its fourth-straight home game in dramatic fashion, the Clemson University men’s basketball team pulled out a thrilling 1-point victory over Syracuse on Tuesday. The Tigers won 71-70 versus the Orange at Littlejohn Coliseum, and a layup by Clyde Trapp with two seconds remaining served as the winning basket.

Clemson (11-9, 5-5) was quite efficient from the floor on the night, shooting 48.1 percent from the floor. Syracuse (13-8, 6-4) shot the ball at a percentage of 42.1 percent. The Tigers knocked down nine 3-pointers and went 10-for-12 at the free throw line. They also outrebounded the Orange 36-26. Syracuse scored 15 points off 16 turnovers, but Clemson made up for that with 32 points in the paint.

The Tigers’ efforts were manned by Tevin Mack and Clyde Trapp, who put together arguably the best performances of their respective Clemson careers. Mack was a force to be reckoned with on the night, knocking down shot after shot from the elbow and extending possessions with pivotal offensive rebounds. The veteran scored a career-high 32 points via a career-best 12 field goals. Additionally, Mack was 7-of-8 at the charity stripe and pulled down 10 rebounds for his first double-double in a Tiger uniform. He became the first Clemson player to score at least 32 points since Jaron Blossomgame dropped 32 in 2016. Furthermore, Mack’s 32 points were the most scored by a Clemson player in a conference tilt at home since Ed Scott scored 36 at Littlejohn in 2002. As for Trapp, on top of his late-game heroics, he set new career-best marks for himself in points (17), rebounds (9), assists (6) and field goals (6) in his 35 minutes of action.
