Welcome to National Pecan Day!

Each year, National Pecan Day on April 14th celebrates one nut native to the United States. It’s also a favorite snack and ingredient across the country.

A member of the hickory family, the pecan is native to central and southern United States. “Pecan” is an Algonquian word, meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack. They are an excellent source of copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and vitamin E. Pecans can help reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. They are also rich in dietary fiber.

Pecans make great snacks all on their own, but they also make terrific garnishes to other foods such as desserts, salads or the main meal. Sweet or savory, pecans can add a little glamor to a dish or be the star of the show.

A team-by-team look at the ACC's transfers (PS; Waters)

The coronavirus may have shut down college sports, but the NCAA’s transfer portal has never been busier.

The transfer portal is the epicenter of college basketball’s rapidly changing landscape. The player moves made via transfer can impact the season as much as the recruitment of high school prospects.

The Atlantic Coast Conference’s member schools have seen a constant flow of players transferring in and out of the league. There has been so much player movement that it’s sometimes hard to keep up with all of the comings and goings.

Here is a team-by-team look at the ACC’s transfer market:

Boston College

Out

Jairus Hamilton ― Hamilton, a 6-8 sophomore forward, averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 25.8 minutes per game this past season. He has transferred to Maryland where he will sit out next season with two years’ of eligibility remaining after that. An interesting sidenote, Hamilton’s brother, Jared, is staying at BC. For now, anyway.

Boeheim Foundation donates to COVID-19 relief; repurposes "gala" for live TV (PS; Ditota)

Jim and Juli Boeheim’s Basket Ball, an annual fundraiser for their charitable foundation, will be held in a novel, virtual way from their Fayetteville home this month.

The coronavirus forced the Boeheims to reevaluate the gala, which Juli Boeheim describes as the fundraising engine of the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation. The event has pivoted from a black tie and glamour mingle at Turning Stone Resort and Casino to a homespun version broadcast on live local TV. It will incorporate members of the Boeheim family — all sequestered at home — plus Zoom video appearances by Orange players who traditionally wear tuxedos and interact with gala-goers.

Gary on Vasquez, recruiting KD, ACC Bias and strategic vomiting (247sports.com; Ermann)

Just when you think you've heard every Gary Williams story, you hear the one about him accusing an opposing player of strategically vomiting.

This one came out on a recent episode of Courtside with Greenberg and Dakich, during which the Maryland coaching legend and Seth Greenberg, his former ACC opponent at Virginia Tech, shared a long conversation about Williams' coaching days. Greenberg reminded him of the game, which took place in 2010.

"Was that your guy or my guy that threw up?" Williams asked.

Greenberg; "My guy!

Williams: "You made him throw up!"

Greenberg: "You said that after the game."

Williams: "Well, we were playing good and then after the throw-up, we couldn't play anymore ... I couldn't find a janitor to clean the thing up."

Greenberg: "You guys scored like, the first 10 points of the game. And Dorenzo Hudson drives it and gets fouled. And he steps to the free throw line. One dribble, two dribbles, sets the ball to shoot it, shoots it, and as he released it, he lost the pregame meal. It was just short of the rim, his pregame meal. I mean, it was disgusting. Took forever to clean up. ... We scored like the 16 of the next 20 points. I do remember, only as you can, as you're walking off the court, you turned to me and you're like, 'You made him do that! That was part of the game plan, like, 'Dorenzo, we get behind, you gotta throw up.' One of those deals."

The anecdote was part of a long and entertaining conversation on the ESPN podcast, which, by the way, is produced by IMS Radio super-producer Schwink. Here are some of the highlights:

ON RECRUITING GREIVIS VASQUEZ

Greenberg: "I'm recruiting Greivis Vasquez for 400 years. And at that time you and [Vasquez's coach] Stu Vetter were kind of at odds for a little bit. So I'm going, 'Man, we might end up getting Greivis. This is unbelievable. Maryland hasn't gotten involved yet.' And then all the sudden, I remember going to Montrose Christian in November and there you are with Stu and I'm going damn it. Two years of work and I'm done."

Williams: "Stu and I became big buddies that year [laughing]. You know what was amazing, the year before we went over there to recruit Durant. That's where Durant was going to high school. I think that was his third high school. he had kind of drifted around a little bit. Obviously, an incredible player. So I didn't even know who Vasquez was."

Driving Don Waful: 2 chauffeurs reminisce about longtime Chiefs fan (PS; Kramer)

Kate Hanni smiled at what she saw in the driveway of Don Waful’s house when she arrived to drive him to a Syracuse Chiefs game in the spring of 2017.

A shiny new Dodge Dart was sitting there ready to go for a spin. That wasn’t necessarily out of place except that Waful, who had just purchased the car, was 100 years old at the time and apparently very optimistic about the need for a new vehicle. He still drove himself around whenever possible and considered it a wise investment. He even renewed his license that year.

Still, Waful needed help getting to and from Chiefs games. Waful, a World War II veteran, was a longtime fan of the franchise and served as team president for 35 years. He was a regular at NBT Bank Stadium up through 2018 before limiting his trips to a handful of games last year.

Hanni, 21, was one of the team employees dispatched to shuttle Waful from his home on Cumberland Avenue. So too was Angelo Caltabiano, 69, who works on the team’s gameday staff.

Waful died in September age the age of 103. With the Syracuse Mets’ home opener, originally scheduled for Friday but now postponed indefinitely, Caltabiano and Hanni shared memories of their many brief drives and wide-ranging conversations with Waful.
