Welcome to Kindergarten Day!

Each year on April 21st, National Kindergarten Day honors the birthday of the man who started the first Kindergarten. Friedrich Wilhelm August Frobel (April 21, 1782 – June 21, 1852) is credited with starting the very first Kindergarten in Germany in 1837. Frobel was a German teacher and a student of Johann Pestalozzi. Frobel laid a foundation for modern education, recognizing that children learn through play and experience.

The first kindergarten (which means garden for the children) was developed in Blankenburg, Germany, in 1837. The kindergarten fostered Frobel’s social experience for children, which would allow them to transition from home to school more smoothly.

Dome renovation takes a big step, won’t be impacted by austerity measures (PS; Carlson)

The final piece of the crown-truss portion of the Carrier Dome’s new roof will be bolted into place Monday night, marking another milestone on the path to completing the building’s renovation.

That renovation is not expected to be impacted by the austerity measures announced by the school earlier on Monday to help navigate the coronavirus pandemic. As part of those measures, the school announced a hold on all new capital projects. It made an exception for projects currently underway and critical projects.

Syracuse Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said that means that all facets of the Carrier Dome renovation would continue as announced, not just the ones that are currently scheduled to be completed by the end of this summer.

“Everything that we had planned to do this cycle is still in the works,” Sala said. “The sound, the lights, the video board. Our goal was to get in there and take care of some of those fan features first. The air conditioning will be ongoing.”

ACC basketball power rankings: An early look at the 2020-21 season (PS; Waters)

When or if the 2020-21 college basketball season begins, the Atlantic Coast Conference is going to be a lot like everyday life.

The ACC is going to look a lot different than it did last year.

The ACC has undergone a huge amount of change in the month since the 2019-20 season abruptly ended during the conference tournaments due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Seniors are on their way to a social distancing graduation, underclassmen have entered the NBA draft, other players have transferred out of the ACC, while even more have transferred in. And then there is an incoming freshman class that includes 16 of the top 50 players in ESPN.com’s rankings for the 2020 class.

With all those changes happening, it’s a good time to look at the ACC’s preseason power rankings and hope that college basketball does, indeed, return soon.

1. DUKE

Gone: The Blue Devils will lose Tre Jones, Vernon Carey and Cassius Stanley to the NBA. Seniors Jack White, Javin DeLaurier are graduating. Alex O’Connell has transferred to Creighton.
Back: Matthew Hurt, Wendell Moore, Jordan Goldwire and Joey Baker.
New: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is bringing in six recruits that rank in ESPN.com’s Top 50 for the class. Patrick Tapé, a 6-10 center, is transferring from Columbia University.
Outlook: It looks like Hurt and Moore will both return, which gives Duke some quality experience to go with all the talented freshmen. The key frosh will be 6-2 point guard Jeremy Roach and 7-foot center Mark Williams.

2. VIRGINIA

Gone: Mamadi Diakite and Braxton Key.
Back: Kihei Clark, Jay Huff, Casey Morsell, Tomas Woldentensae, Kody Stattman.
New: Jabri Adbur-Rahim and Reece Beekman are both Top 50 recruits. Sam Hauser, a transfer from Marquette, is eligible.
Outlook: Virginia will miss Diakite and Key. The addition of Hauser should help the offense. Abdur-Rahim, a 6-5 wing, could also help there. The Cavaliers will receive a big boost if Trey Murphy, a 6-8 transfer from Rice, is granted immediate eligibility.

3. LOUISVILLE

Gone: Jordan Nwora, Dwayne Sutton, Stephen Enoch, Darius Perry, Lamarr Kimble and Ryan McMahon.
Back: David Johnson, Samuell Williamson, Malik Williams, Josh Nickelberry, Aidan Igiehon and Jae’Lyn Withers.
New: D’Andre Davis, a 6-5 guard, is Louisville’s only Top 100 recruit at No. 96, but the Cardinals will add two key grad transfers in Carlik Jones of Radford and Charles Minlend of San Francisco.
Outlook: Louisville suffered major losses, but look at what’s back. An emerging star at guard in Johnson, a potential big-time center in Williams, a former McDonald’s All-American at forward in Williamson. It doesn’t help that juco recruit Jay Scrubb decided to enter the NBA draft, but if Jones can step in at the point, things should be just fine. Minlend will provide scoring on the wing or off the bench. Watch for Igiehon to step into a larger role after playing behind Nwora last year.

7. SYRACUSE

Gone: Elijah Hughes, Jalen Carey, Howard Washington.
Back: Buddy Boeheim, Joe Girard, Marek Dolezaj, Bourama Sidibe, Quincy Guerrier and Jesse Edwards.
New: Woody Newton and Kadary Richmond are incoming freshmen. John Bol Ajak is coming off a redshirt year. Alan Griffin, a transfer from Illinois, is hoping to be eligible.
Outlook: Syracuse stands to lose just one starter, but he’s the Orange’s best player. Elijiah Hughes has entered the NBA draft and will not return. The big question will be the continued development of big men Sidibe and Dolezaj and the progress of Guerrier following his freshman year. If Griffin is granted immediate eligibility, he will help make up for the loss of Hughes.

Syracuse Basketball: Elijah Hughes loss now a permanent blow for Orange (bustingbrackets.com; Walter-Warner)

According to new reports, Elijah Hughes will be remaining in the 2020 NBA Draft and won’t be returning to Syracuse Basketball.

Any hope for a reunion between Syracuse Basketball and star forward Elijah Hughes has been dashed. New reports state the Beacon, New York native will be keeping his name in the 2020 NBA Draft and foregoing his final year of eligibility with the ACC program.

Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news. Hughes himself quickly took to social media to confirm his decision.

thank you orange nation from the bottom of my heart Jeff Goodman on Twitter

— Eli (@elijahhughes4_) April 21, 2020

Hughes was Jim Boeheim’s best player during the 2019-20 season. He averaged 19.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, shooting 34.1 percent from three. Hughes averaged at least 13 points per game during each of his two seasons with the Orange.

The forward’s career didn’t actually start with Syracuse. He played his first season with the East Carolina Pirates, averaging 7.8 points before deciding to transfer out of the program. Because he sat out the 2017-18 season, Hughes is already 22 years old, meaning he would be 23 by the time the next NBA Draft rolled around, a risky proposition.

College basketball: Boeheims find creative way to keep foundation gala going (nny360.com St Croix)

Jim and Juli Boeheim found a creative way to ensure that the 21st annual Boeheim Foundation Basket Ball Gala will go on despite COVID-19 restrictions and the unique event will be utilized to combat the pandemic in Syracuse and surrounding areas.

Jim Boeheim — the Syracuse University men’s basketball coach of 44 years — and his wife, Juli, will host their annual charity extravaganza in a virtual format from their home in Fayetteville on Saturday night.

The special will include a slew of silent and live auctions, a mix of interviews and guest segments, inspirational videos, and a question and answer session with Jim and Juli Boeheim to cap off the casual evening.

Proceeds raised from the event will go to benefit those impacted by COVID-19 in the community. The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation has raised 5.5 million dollars for charitable causes in the area since it was formed in 2009 — focused on enriching the lives of kids in need and providing support for eliminating cancer through research and advocacy.

How will the Prep-to-Pro Trend Affect Syracuse? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Klein)

This is not what Syracuse fans want to think about right now. The silver lining to SU’s recent woes has been the Dior Johnson commitment for 2022. Not only was the plan for Johnson to shine on the Hill, but also for him to bring fellow premier prospects with him. The reasonable fear is that Johnson and others will forego college to play in the NBA’s developmental G-League out of high school.

ESPN’s 1st and 13th ranked prospects Jalen Green, a combo guard, and Isiah Todd, a power forward, are paving the way for Johnson, a verbal commit to the Orange. The revamped G-League development program will pay each prospect $500 thousand to train with NBA veterans and play exhibition games against G-League teams, foreign national teams and NBA academies. Previously, high school players would have made just $125 thousand in the G-League.

The league hopes this will be a more attractive alternative for players who want to earn money out of high school. 2019 five-star recruits R.J. Hampton and LaMelo Ball played in Oceana’s National Basketball League before declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Johnson is ranked 13th on ESPN’s 2022 Recruiting Database. He has not commented on the prep-to-pro revolution beyond retweeting a story about the increased salaries.

ACC Transfer Updates (DBR; King)

This article on ACC transfers is slightly out of date - there’s been at least one more since which affects two teams - but is still a fairly useful starting point at the least.

Obviously Duke has Alex O’Connell out and Patrick Tapé in, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, UNC, NC State, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest lose players.

On the flip side, Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, UNC, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest add players.

The one who’s not mentioned in this article is Isaiah Wilkins, who ended up back home at Wake Forest. The Winston-Salem native said Hokie coach Mike Young suggested he transfer.

The one you worry about a little on a human level is Chris Doherty. The name jumped out at us and we wondered if he was related to Matt Doherty, who of course coached the Irish for one season before his massive flameout at UNC.

Turns out he’s not but this article suggests his family life has been less than ideal.

Coronavirus slows business, but owner brings joy to Syracuse with 100s of American flags (PS; O'Toole)

When Gov. Andrew Cuomo implemented social distancing measures last month to slow the spread of coronavirus, Rick Roach’s masonry business took a hit.

“We’re just not selling a ton of concrete blocks,” said Roach, owner of Barnes and Cone, a Syracuse business that manufactures concrete block.

So, he thought: Why not use his concrete material to boost morale and bring joy to others in the community?

Flags and block have always been a big part of his family. Roach said his father was in the “block business” before he was; his son was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan; and his daughter-in-law still serves in the U.S. Air Force in South Dakota.

“So putting flags in block was natural,” he said.

Roach said he and a couple other workers mortared miniature American flags in concrete block and put them down both sides of Court Street Road.
