Welcome to National Strawberries and Cream Day!

Made with sliced strawberries and homemade whipped cream, strawberries and cream is a snack or treat that is quick and easy to make. Its basic recipe can be tweaked in many ways. Vanilla or amaretto liqueur can be added to the cream, or sour cream with brown sugar can replace the whipped cream altogether and be used as a dip. Layers of strawberries and cream can also be used to make trifles.

Strawberries and cream is a British dish. In 1514, during the Tudor period, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey—who was close to King Henry VIII—began building Hampton Court. Its large kitchens fed about 600 people twice a day. According to one story, a chef there came up with strawberries and cream so that desserts could quickly be prepared for the many guests. The chef's name is not known and Wolsey tends to get credit for the treat's creation. Another similar story says that strawberries and cream were first served at a banquet hosted by Wolsey, but it puts the date of their creation at 1509, which predates the building of Hampton Court.

Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim, others supporting spring athletes (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and other SU leaders are doing wonderful deeds during these trying times brought on by the pandemic.

When the novel coronavirus pandemic halted the collegiate-sports landscape back in mid-March, that significantly affected student-athletes involved in spring sports, yet Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and other Orange leaders are stepping up in a tremendous way to help them.

Syracuse University Athletics has created an initiative called Together ‘Cuse that in part is working to assist those Orange student-athletes whose spring sports’ seasons got cancelled because of the pandemic.

The NCAA, thankfully, has created a mechanism for colleges and universities to invite seniors in these sports back for an additional year of eligibility, and SU athletics director John Wildhack said in a cuse.com announcement, “With the support of Chancellor [Kent] Syverud, the athletics department and our coaches are taking on the financial challenge of bringing interested senior spring sport athletes back because it is simply the right thing to do.”

Per the press release, the 28 returning student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 and represent all of Syracuse’s spring sports – men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rowing, tennis, softball, and men’s and women’s track and field.

Wildhack and his wife, Amy, have committed five percent of his salary to help offset the unbudgeted expense of providing 28 spring sport seniors the opportunity to continue their education and complete their athletic eligibility.

Boeheim and his wife, Juli, who already do so much for the greater Syracuse community, are also making a “sizable gift” to Together ‘Cuse to support spring sport student-athletes. “I am proud of our school and I am thrilled to be able to step up and make this donation,” Jim Boeheim said.

Syracuse basketball player spotlight: Quincy Guerrier (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Quincy Guerrier, a forward for Syracuse basketball, looks to have one of the biggest freshman to sophomore jumps in college basketball.

Quincy Guerrier brings the hustle for Syracuse basketball.

The 6-foot-7 rising sophomore from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is an x-factor for the Orange. In 32 games last season, Guerrier had averages of 6.9 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks, while shooting 49.7% from the field. While not astronomical numbers, he will easily the fourth or fifth option any time on the court, while having to play behind fellow front court members Marek Dolezaj and Bourama Sidibe. Guerrier will most likely be behind them again this season, but with leading scorer Elijah Hughes gone to the NBA Draft, it does open up a starting spot at small forward.

This spot will most likely be given to either Guerrier or incoming transfer Alan Griffin. However, if Griffin is ruled ineligible this season due to transfer rules, Guerrier seems like the most likely suitor for that open 3-spot starting role.

Do you know your Syracuse basketball trivia as well as Buddy Boeheim? (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Mike Waters of Syracuse.com recently held a trivia contest pitting Syracuse basketball star Buddy Boeheim against his brother Jimmy.

Now’s the chance you’ve always been waiting for! You can put your Syracuse basketball knowledge to the test against Orange sharpshooter, Buddy Boeheim.

Mike Waters of Syracuse.com recently held a trivia contest, all about the beloved Syracuse Orange basketball team, in which Buddy went against his older brother, Cornell star, Jimmy. The rules were simple: alternating questions worth one point for each correct answer and zero for a wrong answer. However, if neither could get their question correct on the first try, they have the option to steal a point. If they get that one wrong, they lose a point of there own. First to ten points wins.

Questions were asked on a wide array of subjects, from asking who hit the game winning shot against Duke in 2017, to the correct spelling of Coach Jim Boeheim’s longtime friend and coaching rival, Mike (you try in for yourself) of Duke basketball.

MBB: Ranking Social Media Presence 2020 (RX; HM)

(note from Tom...Indeed. I have the SU basketball program with over 373K of likes, which I assume is what is being used here. That would bump Syracuse from 371K to over 744K, which would move them to 7th place in this listing)

MBB: Ranking Social Media Presence 2020

Top 25 NCAA men's basketball teams by combined social media following (IG+TW+FB).

— SkullSparks (@SkullSparks) May 19, 2020
Duke dominated social media when Zion Williamson was a Blue Devil, but now that he's a New Orleans Pelican... the Dukies still dominate!

The battle for first runner up is actually pretty close between Kentucky, UNC, Indiana and Kansas - and it's a who's-who of college basketball, too (minus UCLA, who's nowhere to be found these days).

The next highest ACC men's basketball teams in terms of social media presence are #10 Notre Dame, #18 Syracuse, #22 Louisville and #24 Virginia.

Syracuse would probably be ranked higher but... what's up with no facebook account, Orange? Actually, that's not true - Syracuse Basketball does have a facebook account, but for some reason the data isn't included in this analysis.

Toss-up: Jesse Edwards or John Bol Ajak? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Kelin)

Bourama Sidibe is set to be SU’s man in the middle of the zone after multiple failed attempts to recruit a transfer that could contribute immediately. Like it or not, the Orange are riding Sidibe for one more season. The senior, however, could not stay on the floor last year. He led the country in fouls per game, and averaged nearly seven fouls per 40 minutes.

Marek Dolezaj served as Sidibe’s primary backup when the Mali native hit foul trouble, but mainly by default. Boeheim did not have many other options with John Bol Ajak redshirting and Jesse Edwards still too raw to contribute. SU is best when Dolezaj (6’10”, 185 lbs) doesn’t have to play out of position.

But Boeheim needs to trust either Ajak or Edwards for that to happen, and if history serves as a precedent, then it is one or the other. The Hall of Famer is known for playing a shallow bench. Assuming 4-star small forward Kadary Richmond contributes right away, SU is set to have a seven-man rotation with one of these two bigs getting consistent minutes.

Virginia Basketball: Is Casey Morsell the next breakout Cavalier? (bustingbrackets.com; Harkins)

Virginia basketball’s rising sophomore Casey Morsell struggled a bit during his first season but could be ready for a big leap in Year 2.

Virginia basketball was one of the toughest teams in the country to gauge last season. The defending national champions struggled a bit out of the gates, falling out of the AP Top 25 and closer to the NCAA Tournament bubble than anyone had been expecting.

Then, though, head coach Tony Bennett’s squad flipped a switch down the stretch by winning 11 of their last 12 games and soaring up the rankings. By the time the regular-season was completed, Virginia was projected to land a No. 5-7 seed at the Big Dance had it not been canceled.

Substantial offensive improvement was the guiding force of Virginia’s hot finish over the final month of the year. Coach Bennett’s team spent the majority of the campaign struggling to put the ball in the basket, particularly from distance, and that was the reason for several of their defeats even while holding one of the nation’s best defenses.

N.C. State replaced a top assistant coach and added two other staffers, the school announced on Tuesday.

Wolfpack men’s basketball coach Kevin Keatts added assistant Mike Summey to his bench, along with the addition of Steve Snell (director of basketball operations) and Chris Zupko (assistant director of basketball operations).

“I’m thrilled to announce three quality hires for our basketball program,” Keatts said in a release. “These are three coaches that add tremendous experience to our program and will help us develop our young men to the best of their abilities both on-and-off-the-court.”

Summey comes back to his home state after spending the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Bowling Green. The Hickory native is a 1997 graduate of N.C. State, where he served as a student manager and a graduate manager from 1997-99.

Summey has climbed up the coaching ladder with stops at Queens College, The Citadel, North Florida and Saint Francis (Pa.). He also served as the Director of Basketball Operations at Miami from 2009-13. He had a head coaching job with Division III Bethany in 2008-09, leading the Bison to a 17-12 record. That was the best record in school history for a first-year head coach.

Snell comes to N.C. State after spending one season as an assistant coach at Ohio. He was previously an assistant at University of Denver, Santa Clara, Air Force, Louisiana-Monroe, Tulane, Marshall, East Tennessee State, UNC-Greensboro, Wingate and Radford.

West side diner to close after 47 years in Syracuse (PS; Hernandez)

A neighborhood diner on Syracuse’s West side has announced it will be closing after decades of dishing out morning pancakes and late-night home fries.

Nichole Shue of Niki’s Quick Cup Diner at 1513 W Genesee St. posted to Facebook that after 47 years, the small establishment would be closing its doors. Shue cites the new social distancing guidelines due to the coronavirus pandemic will not work in the restaurant.
She wrote:

“One of the draws of the diner was it’s layout..and now unfortunately with new social distancing guidelines..its downfall. So many of you would forgo an open table to sit at the counter and watch us cook your food “with extra special love”. And that’s what we are leaving you with. All the love and gratitude myself and my family can give to you."

Syracuse University does NOT have a Facebook account set up for Men's Basketball for some reason.

There's a Football page, a Women's Basketball page, a Men's LAX and a Women's LAX page, and a generic Syracuse Orange page which covers everything.

But no MBB page :(
