Welcome to Cellophane Tape Day!

In the early 1920s, Richard Gurley Drew worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, now known as 3M, which at the time made sandpaper. Drew delivered sandpaper samples to auto body shops and saw the frustration that car painters had when painting two-tone color cars. Surgical adhesive tape, library pastes, and homemade glues were used to hold newspapers on cars when painting, and as the papers were removed, sticking residues often remained, that ripped off some of the paint when they were peeled off.

Drew invented masking tape, and created it with crêpe paper, cabinetmaker's glue, and glycerin. It adhered well to cars when painting, and also came off easily afterward without taking paint away. It was marketed as Scotch Masking Tape in 1925. The name "Scotch" stems from an ethnic stereotype that said Scottish people were stingy. Some stories claim that the tape didn't adhere well at first, or didn't have adhesive in the middle of it. The stories purport that Drew was told to go back to his "Scotch" bosses and to tell them to add more adhesive, or that they asked him why he was being so "Scotch" with the adhesive. It is unclear if Drew actually had these conversations, but nonetheless, the name stuck, as did the final version of the tape.

Elijah Hughes projected to Toronto in first round of new mock draft (itlh; Adler)

The possibility of former Syracuse basketball stars Elijah Hughes and Oshae Brissett reuniting in the pros is intriguing.

Even with all the uncertainty over the current NBA season, as well as the association’s combine and its draft, former Syracuse basketball stud Elijah Hughes is getting a lot of high praise from some analysts and writers.

CBS Sports’ Kyle Boone on Tuesday unveiled the seventh version of his 2020 NBA mock draft, and Hughes finds himself in the first round. The 6-foot-6 small forward, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring during the 2019-20 campaign, is listed by Boone as having an overall prospect rank of No. 22 and a position rank of No. 7.

Syracuse Basketball: Consecutive titles would easily trump rival domination (itlh; Adler)

Championships versus dominating a rival for Syracuse basketball is a no-brainer.

FOX College Hoops posed an interesting question on Twitter that has us wondering about its applicability to Syracuse basketball.

If you had to choose between A) never beating your rival again, but capturing back-to-back national titles, or B) defeating your rival every year, but never claiming a championship, which route would you go?

I wholeheartedly would say “A.” I asked a few of my colleagues here at Inside The Loud House, and also several ‘Cuse hoops fanatics that I continually interact with on social media, and they all echoed my sentiments.

Certainly, other schools out there with a fierce rival may think differently, but for Syracuse, one important issue to consider is that the Orange doesn’t necessarily have a well-defined rival these days.

What are you picking?
— FOX College Hoops (@CBBonFOX) May 24, 2020
Alas, that is a topic that we will debate in the near future. But for the purposes of this column, let’s assume that the ‘Cuse annually tussles with a heated rival, whether a squad from the old Big East days, or perhaps a crew from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Boeheim's Army adds a player with TBT experience to its roster (PS; Waters)

Boeheim’s Army has added another familiar name to its growing roster in advance of The Basketball Tournament’s 2020 event.

Boeheim’s Army general manager Kevin Belbey announced on Tuesday that former Syracuse player John Gillon will play for Boeheim’s Army during this summer’s TBT. Gillon confirmed his decision to play for Boeheim’s Army again.
Gillon, a speedy, dynamic point guard, spent just one year at Syracuse University, but this will be his fourth straight summer with Boeheim’s Army.

"Being able to put those Orange colors back on is always great,'' Gillon said.

Gillon came to Syracuse from Colorado State in 2016 as a graduate transfer. In his one year at SU, Gillon averaged 10.5 points and led the Orange with 185 assists during the 2016-17 season.

He spent two years playing in the G-League before heading overseas this past year to play in Lithuania. Gillon played for BC Pieno Zvaigzdes in the Lithuanian Basketball League before the coronavirus pandemic forced the league to shut down.

He said he’s looking forward to playing again this summer.

Update: Joey’s in DeWitt started outdoor dining today. The county stopped it (PS; Cazentre)

The Onondaga County Health this afternoon ordered Joey’s Italian Restaurant near Carrier Circle to stop allowing people to take their food out to nearby tables. (See original story below).

Our original story:

Joey’s Italian Restaurant near Carrier Circle may be the first in Central New York to offer a return to dining at a table on the property.

It’s starting today, but there’s a twist: You place your order for takeout, and carry it out of the restaurant. But if you want to take it over to one of the tables that Joey’s has placed outside — six feet or more apart — go ahead.

“It’s still takeout,” said Joey’s general manager Rick DeCuffa. “You’re just taking it out to a table. And there’s no service. You’re on your own.”
