Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Syracuse Basketball: Analysts pointing to Orange for Frank Anselem (itlh; Adler)

Several recruiting analysts have projected 2020 big man Frank Anselem to Syracuse basketball.

Frank Anselem, a four-star center in the 2020 class, is down to five finalists, including Syracuse basketball, and some encouraging signs have headed the Orange’s way of late.

Over the past few days, three analysts on and one analyst on the 247Sports Web site have prognosticated that the 6-foot-10 Anselem will ultimately select the ‘Cuse.

It’s always more encouraging than not when recruiting experts forecast that a talented prospect is going to pick Syracuse, however, let’s make one thing abundantly clear.

Jim Boeheim speaks out on protests across America: 'We must work to eliminate injustice' (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

There's no question it's been perhaps the most difficult week in modern American history.

The death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who pleaded for his life at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, has triggered a response from Americans like no other.

Major cities across the country have been the sites of constant protests, mostly peaceful, with some destructive.

Louisville staff member arrested during protests (ESPN; Borzello)

Louisville director of basketball operations Kahil Fennell was arrested Saturday night during protests in the city over the death of Breonna Taylor.

According to the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections booking log, Fennell was booked at 8:58 p.m. local time on Saturday and charged with unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor. The Louisville Courier-Journal obtained Fennell's arrest report, which said Fennell violated Louisville's curfew order.

The city of Louisville has seen protests for several days because of the death of Taylor, a black woman who was shot and killed in March by three police officers who entered her apartment while executing a "no-knock warrant." The FBI announced earlier this month it was opening an investigation into the shooting.

Louisville coach Chris Mack supported Fennell in a statement on Sunday.

"Earlier this morning Kahil and I spoke and I was made aware of his booking," Mack said. "I stand by my statement I made later in the morning and I stand by Kahil. When he feels the time is right he will comment."

Fennell has been at Louisville for two years under Mack after spending one season as an assistant coach at Portland State.

Mack released an earlier statement on Sunday morning about George Floyd's death and the ensuing protests around the world this weekend.

"What an incredibly sad time in our country. The fact we are more than 200 years old as a country and can't figure it out is incomprehensible," Mack said. "Who could watch George Floyd die on the street and not think 'What in the hell is wrong with people?' I just can't comprehend that kind of treatment to anyone. It feels like our country is going backwards ... I hope that we can play a part in helping to heal an entire community we proudly represent."

Hidden Gems of CNY: A Middle-Eastern fusion restaurant tucked inside a convenience store (PS; Miller)

The gyros in Philadelphia, where Meru Patel grew up, had a unique flavor about them. The gyros he’d buy from a street vendor in Brooklyn also were a hyped-up version of the classic Greek sandwich. They were more than just lamb, a couple vegetables and feta cheese wrapped in a pita.

Meru, 26, wanted that flavor in Syracuse.

“It was a mix of Greek, Indian and Middle Eastern,” he said. “It was a little spicy, but it was full of flavor. I call it Mid-Eastern fusion, and now I’m making it for Syracuse.”

Meru’s family has owned the Westcott Grocery store on Westcott Street for 15 years. It’s a mid-sized convenience store next door to Boom Babies clothing store a mile east of the Syracuse University campus. The store had a pizzeria inside for years, and it was once pretty popular among the late-night student crowd. Meru wanted to try something different
