National-Tapioca-Pudding-Day-July-15.jpg

Welcome to National Tapioca Pudding Day!

Tapioca is a starch derived from the cassava root. While the root looks similar in shape and color to a sweet potato, in its natural form, cassava contains cyanide. However, grinding down the root produces a flour or powder used as a thickening agent. It may also be produced tapioca into pearls. Also known as manioc or yucca, growers cultivate cassava around the world. A part of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family, this woody shrub is native to South America but is also grown in Asia and Africa.

Once a staple in early American households, tapioca was dehydrated to survive long sea voyages without spoilage. In a dehydrated form, tapioca earns an extended shelf life. Cooks wanting to make homemade tapioca should plan ahead. Tapioca pearls must soak overnight before using them.

SU basketball looks to replace Cornell on its schedule (PS; Waters)

Last Wednesday, the Ivy League announced that it would cancel all sports in the fall and push the start of its winter sports to Jan. 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That same night, Pete Corasaniti’s phone started to buzz; same with those of Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and each of his three assistant coaches.

“I probably got five to 10 phone calls that night,‘' Corasanti, Syracuse’s director of basketball operations, said. “The coaches got some calls. They’ve all got connections.‘'

The calls came from coaches at schools hoping to replace Cornell on Syracuse’s schedule.

The annual game between Syracuse and Cornell was cast in doubt due to the Ivy League’s decision.

Now, schools were calling to see if they could fill the hole in SU’s schedule.

“I know a lot coaches called Ivy League coaches and said ‘Who are you playing?‘’ Corasaniti said. “But everyone knows that we always play Cornell, so we got calls right away.‘'

Corasanti declined to name the schools that he heard from that night, but he did say that he has also talked with Cornell’s coaching staff.

Evaluating Syracuse Basketball’s 2021 Scholarship Offers Part 1 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

For the past couple years Syracuse Basketball’s recruiting hasn’t been too good, to put it nicely. The Orange have been swinging and missing on big name recruits and then, mostly, having to settle for low-three stars. But with the verbal commitment of five-star Dior Johnson, the tides have changed. His fame and lure has enticed other big recruits to look at SU as a possible home for the next few years. Benny Williams has already committed to the Orange, but here is a breakdown and evaluation of half of the scholarship offers Syracuse currently has out in the class of 2021:

JOHN CAMDEN | SF | 4-STARS

SIZE: 6’7, 195 lbs.

HOME TOWN: Wayne, PA – Archbishop John Carroll High School

OTHER OFFERS: Florida, Indiana, Miami, Penn State, TCU, Temple, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Xavier, Memphis

EVALUATION: Camden is the prototypical Syracuse player. He’s a long, rangy forward that would be perfect on the wing of the two-three zone. If you wanted to go big and move him to the top of the zone, his length would be even more advantageous. Camden is listed as a small forward, but he plays like a guard. He averaged 16 points, six rebounds and three assists per game last season. Camden’s a knockdown shooter from deep (example: he hit ten threes in one game). He is mostly a catch-and-shoot player, sometimes being able to create his own shot or utilize a pull-up, but that is where he can grow. Camden’s passing ability is definitely above-average for a forward, and his handles are impressive for his size. He can stretch the floor, which is what Syracuse usually looks for in recruits. Camden has the frame to add some more muscle, which will only benefit his game and allow him to play on the inside with the bigger guys. Camden would fit really well into the Syracuse system and could be a third splash-bro with Joe Girard and Buddy Boeheim. Plus, a tandem of him and Benny Williams would be scary good.

QUINCY ALLEN | SF | 4-STARS

SIZE: 6’7, 190 lbs.

HOME TOWN: Washington, DC – Maret School

OTHER OFFERS: NC State, Colorado, Boston College, Clemson, Florida, Howard, Marquette, Miami, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Louisville

EVALUATION: Allen is the best player in D.C. and the 11th ranked small forward in the country for the class of 2021. He’s a long, strong player that would fit well on the wing of the zone. Allen’s offensive game is smooth and he never seems rushed or flustered. He plays a calm pace, which sometimes lulls the defense to sleep and that is when he attacks. Allen’s strength is shooting from the outside with a smooth stroke. He’s less of a spot-up shooter and more of a make-your-own-shot shooter. He shoots off the dribble most of the time and uses a lot of pull-ups to create space. Allen seems comfortable and confident going both left or right. What makes him difficult to defend is that he also has the strength to take a defender to the basket. He isn’t afraid to go into the big guys in the paint, and he has a lot of body control while down there. Allen’s handle isn’t the best, but when he puts his head down he can usually get past any defender. Plus, he’s just an athletic freak that can jump out of the building. Allen would be a massive get for Syracuse, one that could be program altering when you think about pairing him with Dior Johnson.

Fizz Four: Controversies No. 1 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

We’ve seen profanity-laced press conference rants, jacket ripping and NCAA violations. It’s all led us here: the number one controversy in Syracuse basketball history.

Indeed, the most important thing that ever happened in the history of Syracuse Basketball was joining the Big East.

Nobody too far outside of Central New York knew anything about Syracuse University before the league was created by Dave Gavitt. It was a league built on big markets, wildly charismatic coaches and an upstart cable sports channel called ESPN.

The inaugural Big East champion was decided inside Manley Field House. SU was on a 57-game game winning streak on the home floor. Georgetown won 52-50. A rivalry was born.

Starting in 1983, the conference tournament was moved to the mecca of basketball, Madison Square Garden.

Boeheim's Army needs to stick to its roots, and Carmelo Anthony (the juice; McGlynn)

How is it that a team that added Malachi Richardson completely fell apart down the stretch offensively? I had expectations of at least a semifinal run for Boeheim’s Army in 2020. A 65-48 beatdown in the quarterfinals was not supposed to be in the cards. Two things were missing: zone defense and Carmelo Anthony.

There was something very Syracuse-esque about the collapse in the second half. All loyal ‘Cuse fans have seen the Orange offense hit a devastating scoring drought at a crucial moment. Even by those standards, this rough patch was particularly rough. The Orange alumni finished 20-66 from the field and 4-27 from behind the arc.

After a great defensive effort to keep things close early, the Boeheim Army’s offense could not buy a bucket. With 4:02 remaining, ‘Cuse trailed 33-32. The quarter ended 48-34 and only got worse from there. Sideline Cancer went on a 24-2 run through the end of the third quarter into the fourth. Syracuse simply bricked one shot after another. The offense was way too comfortable settling for jumpers from the outside.

You have to wonder what impact Tyler Lydon would have been to this squad had he not pulled out of the tournament because of a hip injury. He is a reliable outside shooter with the size to make plays on the inside. Chris McCullough would have been a nice fit as well, but he opted out for personal reasons, the second straight year he has missed out on TBT. In the end, the ‘Cuse alumni desperately needed a go-to scorer in those minutes as their shots weren’t falling.

NCAA Basketball: Top 25 breakout sophomore players for 2020-21 season (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

25. Quincy Guerrier – Syracuse Orange

2019-20 stats: 6.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg

While Syracuse returns four starters from last season’s team, the missing piece is Elijah Hughes, their leading overall scorer. Assuming that Illinois transfer Alan Griffin is unable to play, Guerrier, one of the lone returning bench players is an ideal player to start at the wing. He fits well in the zone, rebounds at a high level, and can slash to the hole. If he can shoot the ball at all, the 6’7 forward can be a key piece for the Orange.

UNC Basketball: Analyzing five-star freshman Caleb Love future impact (bustingbrackets.com; Andre)

What does five-star freshman Caleb Love provide UNC Basketball for the upcoming season?

UNC Basketball is looking to bounce back after a rollercoaster season, to say the least. With the injuries and lineup changes throughout last year, the team was never able to get into a flow together and build team chemistry. Coach Williams will surely have this team up and ready for another basketball season soon. And with the loss of Cole Anthony heading into the NBA Draft, there must be a newcomer taking over the point guard position.

It’s been three years since the Tar Heels have been on top as National Champions. Since that time, they have been solid holding their ground in the ACC. But the results in the tournament have not been what was expected going into the year. For a school that’s priorities are all about winning, the next man that comes in is required to make the difference that the last man didn’t. And with hard work on the floor, the results should hopefully be to carry the trophy by the end of the year.

High School phenom Caleb Love just may be the next big thing for the Tar Heels. Love, alongside a few other freshmen in Anthony Harris, RJ Davis, etc. are looking to come in and make a difference in this freshly new roster. It will be a fresh new start for North Carolina to make noise in the ACC. With the new freshmen coming in to fill their role along with the returning players, it can possibly become a successful season in North Carolina.

Love is a player that the team would love to play alongside. The one thing that stands out about his play is that he is one of the best decision-makers when on the fast break. While many struggles with the ball in transition, Love is so smart he can feed the open guy when needed to or go hard for a ferocious dunk of his own. It’s no question that with his talent and IQ, he is going to put on a show for the ages at the Dean Smith Center.

Love averaged 26.3 points and 3.1 assists in his senior season. He has a tendency to take over games on his own and put the game in his own hands when his team needs a boost. That seems to be what the Tar Heels missed a season ago. Although Cole Anthony was a sensational scorer, it didn’t necessarily help the other guys off the floor feed off of his energy. Throughout his days in High School, Love has had the ability to make his teammates better on the floor and give them a spark. And hopefully, the impact will remain the same in North Carolina.

Syracuse native David Muir makes TV ratings history with No. 1 overall show (PS; Herbert)

Syracuse native David Muir has made history in the latest TV ratings.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” anchored by Muir was No. 1 in all of television last week, including in total viewers and among viewers ages 25-54 and 18-49. The nightly program held the top five spots, beating every single show on broadcast and cable television -- a first for any evening news program since Nielsen electronic ratings began in 1991.

Muir drew an average of 8.965 total viewers, with 1.72 million in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic and 1.154 million among viewers ages 18-49 for the week of July 6. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC among younger adults in the 18-49 demo for the first time in 24 years, when Peter Jennings sat at the ABC desk in the 1995-96 season.

“NBC Nightly News” with Lester Holt was in second place with 7.595 million total viewers, 1.485 million viewers ages 25-54, and 1.018 million viewers ages 18-49.

“CBS Evening News” with Norah O’Donnell was a distant third with 5.421 million total viewers, 995,000 viewers ages 25-54, and 659,000 viewers ages 18-49.

“World News Tonight” has been the No. 1 show in America at a time when people are seeking more information on Covid-19, the disease that’s infected over 3.3 million people in the U.S. and killed more than 135,000 nationwide, and updates on the upcoming election. Muir has also been among the most-watched programs overall for months, beating popular TV shows like “NCIS” and “Young Sheldon” in March.
