How Alan Griffin, whose waiver has been granted, will fit in at Syracuse (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

Alan Griffin didn’t transfer to Syracuse merely for big minutes in front of a rabid fan base. He arrives with the intention of starting in place of Elijah Hughes, while elevating his career trajectory toward his NBA aspirations. He wants to play 30-plus minutes per game, which was at the center of the Orange’s sales pitch this spring. Griffin, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, comes to SU from Illinois with two years of eligibility, which jolted the fan base after Hughes entered the NBA Draft. Then, on Tuesday afternoon, Griffin provided Syracuse fans another reason to cheer: The NCAA granted him immediate eligibility, something coach Jim Boeheim and his staff had been expecting.

This is a major plus to Syracuse, specifically in the form of reinforcement on the perimeter. Griffin projects to slot in the two or three on offense. He guarded everyone but the five during two seasons coming off the bench at Illinois. He used his length to rebound, defend and shoot. “He’s really good and he does a lot really well,” Boeheim said. “His numbers are incredible for playing 18 minutes per game. I don’t really know of too many players who can put together those numbers in 18 minutes. Maybe Elijah Hughes. I mean, eight points, five rebounds, 41 percent 3-point shooting? He’ll really help us.”

That’s the initial takeaway from the announcement, which came at a time when Syracuse joins many other schools in welcoming back students to campus amid the pandemic. (Classes at Syracuse begin on Aug. 24). Here are a few thoughts about what Griffin’s immediate eligibility means for himself, Syracuse, and the players he’ll most closely affect.

Syracuse Basketball: Alan Griffin ruled immediately eligible for 2020-21 (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Syracuse basketball transfer Alan Griffin has been ruled eligible for the upcoming season by the NCAA, no longer being forced to sit one year.

Syracuse basketball has reported that the NCAA has granted a waiver to allow Alan Griffin immediate eligibility for the upcoming season.

Griffin, who transferred from Illinois, said he was “relieved” in a statement on cuse.com, saying, “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since I came to Syracuse.”

Syracuse basketball posted to their social media with the news, which included a picture of Griffin backing up that feeling he described.

A post shared by Syracuse Men’s Basketball (@cuse_mbb) on Aug 18, 2020 at 12:33pm PDT

Griffin was one of the top transfers this offseason, after averaging 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds at power-six conference school Illinois last season. At 6-foot-5, Griffin has the potential to somewhat mend the loss of Elijah Hughes deciding to enter his name in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Alan Griffin gets waiver, immediately eligible for Syracuse in 20-21 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Alan Griffin will be immediately eligible for the 2020-21 basketball season at Syracuse. Griffin, who transferred in after two seasons at Illinois, was expected to receive a waiver from the ACC; however, that didn’t become official until this week.

Early in the offseason, Syracuse moved fast to add the 6-foot-5 Griffin; after landing in his top six schools, Griffin committed to Syracuse in early April.

During his sophomore season, Griffin averaged 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 41.6 percent on his 3-point attempts. That efficiency came with good volume, too: 63.5 percent of his field goal attempts were from beyond the arc.

Syracuse's Alan Griffin had received a waiver from the NCAA and is eligible for the 20-21 college basketball season, per release.

Better yet, Griffin emerged as one of the most efficient wings in the country; Griffin shot 60 percent on 2-point attempts, too (68 FG% at the rim), and ranked No. 6 nationally in offensive rating, according to KenPom.

Griffin posted an effective shooting rate of 55.3 percent on catch-and-shoot attempts this season, a top 20 number in the Big Ten, per Synergy Sports.

The fit with Griffin at Syracuse is ideal. Griffin should pair nicely on the perimeter with Buddy Boeheim, one of the more underrated offensive players in the ACC, and rising sophomore playmaker Joe Girard.

Up front, Syracuse has solid talent, too. Quincy Guerrier is a blue-collar star on the rise: 5.1 percent block rate, 10 percent offensive rebound rate.

Marek Dolezaj checks a variety of boxes (3.4 percent block rate), while working as a sneaky good empty-side screen-roll rim-runner.

Center Bourama Sidibe (6.8 fouls committed per 40 minutes) was the only ACC player with a seven percent block rate and three percent steal rate in the 2019-20 season.

Orange Watch: Alan Griffin's eligibility waiver fantastic news for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

If there is indeed a punctual or delayed 2020-21 college basketball season, the Holiday Season just came early for Jim Boeheim and the Orange basketball program with Tuesday’s announcement that the NCAA has granted a transfer waiver to Alan Griffin to become eligible immediately to play for SU the upcoming season.

For a day at least, this brings good news to Orange Nation with all the unknowns still existing about the planned start of the 2020 college football season.

Not only will Griffin step into playing time left by the departed Elijah Hughes, his three-point shooting marksmanship will keep opposing defenses honest, and gives the Orange a third scoring threat from long range with Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard.

Griffin’s threat from beyond the arc (47 3-pointers with Illinois last season) also figures to open up SU’s inside game with constantly improving senior Bourama Sidibe, backed up by sophomore Jesse Edwards, redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak, and when needed the versatile Marek Dolezaj. Plus, Griffin can drive effectively to the basket and use that advantage to find an open shooting teammate.

Analysis: Carmelo Anthony’s on-court profanity tests TV broadcasts (PS; Burrows)

Carmelo Anthony and the Portland Trail Blazers are set to put TV broadcasts to the test for at least one more series this season.

The absence of fans in the NBA’s Orlando bubble has made on-court audio much easier to hear, and one of Anthony’s catch phrases has networks dropping sound early and often.

A recent study by FiveThirtyEight showed that Anthony and the Blazers have had audio dropped 57 times in four games on TNT, likely to cover up profanity, and the rate that it happens is higher with Anthony on the court.

— FiveThirtyEight (@FiveThirtyEight) August 18, 2020

According to FiveThirtyEight, game audio was dropped once every three minutes with Anthony on the court and just once every five minutes with him off.

Anthony securing rebounds is likely the cause for many of the on-court audio drops. The former Syracuse basketball star often tells teammates “I got it” when pulling down a rebound. Other times he uses a slightly more vulgar phrase –– you can find examples here, here, and here –– to tell teammates and opponents to vacate the area.

‘The Binge’ trailer: First look at teen party comedy filmed in Syracuse with Vince Vaughn (PS; Herbert)

The trailer is out for “The Binge,” offering a first look at the latest movie from Liverpool, N.Y.-based production company American High.

The teen party comedy puts a funny twist on the premise of “The Purge” horror films: “Set in a time where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, the only day anyone can participate in the ‘fun’ is on Binge day.” The movie follows three friends -- Skyler Gisondo (“Booksmart”), Eduardo Franco (“American Vandal”); Dexter Darden (“The Maze Runner”) -- as they turn 18 and are eligible to participate in the Big Binge Party for the first time in the near future (the year 2032).

“One Nation Under the Influence,” an accompanying movie poster tagline reads.

“The Binge,” directed by Jeremy Garelick and written by Jordan VanDina, also stars Vince Vaughn (“Swingers,” “Wedding Crashers”); Hayes MacArthur (“Angie Tribeca”); Affion Crockett (“The Wedding Ringer”); and Grace Van Dien, the daughter of “Starship Troopers” actor Casper Van Dien.

Garelick, who founded American High, also produced the movie along with Will Phelps, Mickey Liddell, Pete Shilaimon, Nicole Stojkovich, Ryan Bennett and Michael Schade; Chris Bongirne and Michael Glassman serve as executive producers.

“The Binge” premieres Friday, Aug. 28 on Hulu. To sign up for the Hulu streaming service, visit hulu.com.

The Hulu original film was shot over nearly two months in the Syracuse area last year with scenes at Onondaga Lake Parkway, Carnegie Library, Hanover Square, Clinton Square, a house in the village of Liverpool, Village Burger, a bridge in Van Buren, the Greater Syracuse Soundstage(formerly known as the nano film hub in DeWitt), and the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool, now known as Syracuse Studios. The Film, TV and Entertainment Office at Visit Syracuse says the production will be eligible for the New York State Film Tax Credit program.

It’s the Syracuse bureau’s biggest film to date, said Eric Vinal, vice president of film, TV and entertainment for Visit Syracuse. More than 2,000 extras and 50-60 local crew members worked on the movie; scenes in the trailer include a large crowd at a club party and teen students in what appears to be a school assembly.

“The Binge” is the sixth movie filmed in Syracuse to be released this year.

“Holly Slept Over,” “Banana Split,” “Big Time Adolescence,” and “Looks That Kill,” all produced by American High, were released this spring. “Big Time Adolescence,” starring Pete Davidson, is currently streaming on Hulu; the other three titles are available on digital and Video On Demand (VOD). A fifth movie, “Gabriel’s Inferno,” directed by Tosca Musk and based on the best-selling erotic romance novels by Sylvain Reynard, is currently streaming on Passionflix.
