Welcome to National Bacon Lover's Day!

National Bacon Lover's Day is dedicated to the popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

Baskertball transfers into SU vs. Transfers out: Who wins? (Mike's Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

It’s time for another installment of Mike’s Mailbox.

Even in the offseason during a nation-wide pandemic, the readers have questions related to Syracuse basketball.

We’re going to start this week’s Mike’s Mailbox off with a question that I never would have thought of myself.

Q: I’m thinking of how transfers in and out of Syracuse in the Jim Boeheim era would fare against each other. How would they match up? Who would win a scrimmage?

Anonymous

Mike: This is a fun question. I’ve done a lot of stories in the past on players who have transferred either to or from Syracuse, but I never thought about putting together teams of those players and comparing them.

So here goes:

The transfer-out team would have to feature guys like Keith Hughes and Earl Duncan (Rutgers), Matt Roe (Maryland), B.J. Johnson (La Salle), Richard Manning (Washington) and Bobby Lazor (Arizona State).

Syracuse Basketball: With Alan Griffin, NCAA actually did something right (itlh; Adler)

The NCAA, thankfully, made the correct move in granting immediate eligibility to Syracuse basketball wing Alan Griffin.

Alan Griffin can officially compete for Syracuse basketball during the 2020-21 campaign, as the NCAA, amazingly, did something good.

I say this with a hint of sarcasm, because the NCAA is often criticized – and deservingly so – for amounting to a fairly incompetent organization.

However, in the case of Griffin, a talented transfer from Illinois, the NCAA gets a tiny applause from me for handling this situation in the appropriate manner.

Earlier this month, I penned a column in which I said that it would prove absolutely absurd if Griffin didn’t land a waiver from the NCAA to have immediate eligibility with the Orange.

That’s because Griffin elected to transfer from Illinois out of the Big Ten Conference to the ‘Cuse. His hometown, in Ossining, N.Y., is much closer to the Hill than his former school, and that’s an important element, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

A ton of other traditional transfers of late had secured waivers from the NCAA to play in the upcoming stanza, and there is no logical reason why Griffin shouldn’t have acquired one, too.

SU Top 100: #3 Carmelo Anthony – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

Wow, we’ve made it. The SU Top 100 list and our corresponding FizzCasts are almost over. There have been a lot of talented and accomplished athletes that have made the list so far. Now it is the time you have all been waiting for. You knew this name was going to be at the top of the list. Ready for it? Coming in at No. 3 is Carmelo Anthony.

Oh boy, where do we even start with Melo. He is hands down the best player in Syracuse Men’s Basketball history, and you can very well say he is the best collegiate basketball player ever. Although Anthony only played for the Orange for one season, that year was so special he earned those titles.

Before Anthony even stepped foot in the Dome, he was already a star. A highly touted prospect with an afro as big as his dreams. Anthony attended Oak Hill Academy for his senior year of high school, where he averaged 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. He played in some big time games, including a historic matchup against a high school-aged Lebron James. Anthony would drop 34 points in that one to lead Oak Hill to a win.

Melo only lost one game at Oak Hill and went on to be a McDonald’s All-American.

Following his outstanding high school career, Anthony cut his fro, went to the braids, and started donning orange. He played for Syracuse in the 2002-2003 season and put together the best one-and-done campaign in program history.

Orange Avengers: The Syracuse Basketball Galaxy - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

We’ve all had to find outlets for coping with the stresses of the COVID world over the past handful of months. I used this as an opportunity to catch up on the Avengers movies.

And let me just say….Endgame….a-ma-zing!!!!!

Producing content for a Syracuse sports website has been a bit challenging without actual Syracuse sports. My colleague, Wes Cheng, recently penned a column on what a Syracuse presidential party – the Orange Party…duh! – would look like.

I took that a step beyond.

Here’s what a team of Orange Avengers would like look as they saved the Syracuse basketball galaxy.

Captain America

The unquestioned leader of the Avengers, the former soldier always showed up and always delivered. He saved his best for the biggest moments. And his team responded. The Avengers were never out of a fight with Steve Rogers at the helm.

Just like John Wallace.

Wallace handled the responsibility of wearing the vaunted No. 44 while dominating from the power forward position as well as anyone.

Reopening NY: ‘Movie theaters I think are next,’ Cuomo says (PS; Tampone)

Gov. Andrew Cuomo offered some hope Wednesday that movie theaters in New York could reopen soon.

“Movie theaters I think are next,” he said during an interview on WAMC. “They are a situation that we have to attend to.”

Theaters are among the last businesses that have not been allowed to reopen in New York after months of shutdowns due to the coronavirus. Cuomo said earlier this week that gyms could reopen as soon as Monday.

Other businesses and activities that have not been allowed to return yet include the state’s nontribal casinos, plays and musicals and indoor dining in New York City.

Cuomo said previously that the businesses that are still closed are least essential and highest risk. He has been speaking for months about the potential for the virus to spread easily in indoor, air conditioned spaces like movie theaters.

But the virus has remained under control in the state, even several months into reopening. The positive test rate for the virus has been less than 1% in the state for the last 12 days in a row.

Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres, the nation's two largest theater chains, have been planning their reopenings for months. Both plan to begin reopening this week in states where it's allowed.

Like other nonessential businesses in New York, movie theaters closed in March to help slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The state began reopening businesses in phases in May.
