Welcome
to National Banana Split Day!

National Banana Split Day is dedicated to the popular ice cream treat. The foundation of a banana split consists of a banana cut in half lengthwise in a long dish, also known as a banana boat. Most banana splits then have three scoops of ice cream placed between the banana, one each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. The vanilla is usually topped with candied pineapple, the chocolate with chocolate fudge, and the strawberry with strawberry sauce. Finally, whipped cream, crushed nuts, and a maraschino cherry top the confection.

By most accounts, the banana split was invented by 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist David Strickler in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, in 1904. The price was originally 10 cents per sundae, and they became popular with students at nearby Saint Vincent College, before spreading all over the country. Strickler ended up buying the pharmacy and ran it until 1966, when he sold it. He died in 1971, but the pharmacy operated under other owners until closing down in 2000. Each year the Great Banana Split Celebration now takes place in Latrobe.

SU men’s basketball continues recruiting for 2021, 10 on scholarship (DO; Hamer)

Though it’s unclear whether Syracuse men’s basketball will suit-up for the 2020-21 season, the Orange’s 2021 roster continues to take shape.

The Orange currently have 10 out of 13 players on their 2021 scholarship list, though that number is likely to grow. Several offers are pending, and more are sure to follow in the coming months. Buddy Boeheim does not count as a scholarship player because of head coach Jim Boeheim’s status as a university employee. The biggest wildcard for 2021, though, is 5-star verbal commit Dior Johnson.

Johnson, the top-ranked point guard in his class according to 247sports, was initially expected to be a member of the 2022 class after his verbal commitment in February. But reports in July revealed that Johnson is considering reclassifying to the 2021 class, making him a 17-year-old freshman.

With Johnson, Boeheim, Joe Girard III and current freshman combo guard Kadary Richmond, Syracuse would have one of its deepest and most versatile backcourts in recent memory.

Johnson, a point guard from Saugerties, New York, would join 4-star recruit Benny Williams as the two verbal commits for the 2021 class. Williams, a 6-foot-8 wing from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (Maryland), should immediately play a role in the Orange’s rotation along with 2020 transfer Alan Griffin, sophomore Quincy Guerrier and Class of 2020 forward Woody Newton.

“I’m planning on coming in and making an immediate impact,” Williams told The Daily Orange after his verbal commitment in June.

Syracuse Basketball: High-major offers pour in for 2023 target Elijah Fisher (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball already faces a ridiculous amount of competition for elite 2023 prospect Elijah Fisher.

At the end of July, Syracuse basketball got into the mix for 2023 wing Elijah Fisher, and at present, the number of collegiate suitors for him has ballooned to nearly 20, per a review of the main recruiting services.

The 6-foot-7 shooting guard/small forward is a rising sophomore who attends Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario. Most of the primary recruiting Web sites haven’t put out their individual rankings of players in the 2023 class yet, however, media reports indicate that Fisher is one of the best all-around prospects within this cycle throughout North America.

Despite his recruitment residing in its early stages, scholarship offers doled out to Fisher to date are from the Orange, along with Arizona, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Memphis, Morgan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Seton Hall, Southern California, St. John’s, Tennessee State, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.

How Boeheim's Army was Created (SI; podcast; Rao)

After their recent defeat in the quarter-finals to Sideline Cancer, find out how a former SU manager created the 'Ultimate Syracuse Alumni Team' with the help of former star players and alumni.

SU Top 100: Biggest Snubs – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

We did it. We have officially made it through our SU Top 100 list. To do something like this takes a lot of time and effort. It’s definitely not easy. The staff at Orange Fizz is proud of the list we came up with, but obviously nothing is perfect. So this week, we will be looking back at our work to see where we can improve.

Today, we begin with the “Biggest Snubs.” Each staff member has picked an SU athlete that should have made our list, but didn’t. Take a look at who we missed:

BRAD: RAKEEM CHRISTMAS

When Rakeem Christmas came to the Hill in 2011, he was a 6’9”, 222 lb ball of clay. The Orange coaching staff molded him into one of the most underrated bigs in program history. Christmas’s entire career was leading up to his breakout senior season.

After a modest freshman season with very limited playing time, he put on 20 pounds of muscle. That propelled him to an impact role in SU’s 2013 Final Four run. Despite starting each of the 40 games and swatting nearly two blocks per game, Christmas continued to take a back seat to C.J. Fair, Brandon Triche, Jerami Grant and James Southerland. His junior season was more of the same.

The Salt City became Rak City in 2014-2015, his senior season. Christmas catapulted from 5.8 points per game as a junior to 17.5. His rebounding numbers swelled by four. The country quickly took notice.

“He is the most feared low-post player in the country,” former Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino said. “That is a tremendous credit to him and the Syracuse coaching staff. When he was a freshman, you could leave him alone… he couldn’t score.”

This Year’s ACC Basketball Coaches (DBR; Jacobs)

This will be the fifth straight season the ACC sees at least one new head coach, the 11th coaching change in the past seven years.

The newcomer in 2020-21 is Wake Forest’s Steve Forbes, an Iowan who’s made more professional stops than a streetcar and won three quarters of his games as a head coach.

Wake is Forbes’s 11th stop since embarking on a college coaching path during the 1989-90 season. That was after a year as sports information director at Southern Arkansas, his alma mater, where Forbes surely realized there was a more prestigious (or at least more lucrative) career in directing players than in hyping them.

Much of his time was spent at junior colleges in Iowa and Kansas and more recently at Northwest Florida State. Forbes landed at NFS after being banished by the NCAA for abetting Bruce Pearl’s lying about a rules violation at Tennessee. His combined juco record was 130-34, a superlative .792 winning percentage.

Forbes moved for two seasons to Wichita State (2013, 2014) as an assistant to Gregg Marshall, a period that was a highwater mark in Shocker history. The ’13 team reached the Final Four, upsetting No.1 seed Gonzaga in the process. The ’14 team won its first 35 games, entering the NCAAs as the top seed in the Midwest.

That prosperity made Marshall a popular candidate for the Wake job when it came open with the merciful firing of Jeff Bzdelik, but he declined to consider trading WSU for WFU. Wake couldn’t pay him enough, Marshall teased.

Forbes, buoyed by the Shockers’ success, landed at East Tennessee for the 2016 season. A solid Southern Conference program, ETSU previously gave the ACC another head coach, Les Robinson.

Duke: No Fans For Fall Sports (DBR; King)

Duke has just announced that there will be no fans allowed for fall sports. They are apparently working on having virtual fans in the stands, so there’s that.

Since Duke football is already the ACC champion of social distancing you’d think they might not notice if people sat in the stands.

However, as compensation, they are working on having virtual fans in the stands, whatever that means.

For those who have tickets to fall events, Duke will be in touch soon “regarding options.”

Life in the age of Covid continues to dazzle.

Florida State Basketball: Analyzing Seminoles 2020 recruiting class (bustingbrackets.com; Andre)

Florida State Basketball has a trio of intriguing newcomers for the upcoming season. Here’s a closer look at what they bring talent-wise.

With a great season the team had a season ago, Head Coach Leonard Hamilton is excited to guide this Seminole team back to a top-notch team in the NCAA. As any school always does to remain a contender, Florida State Basketball has recruited some very high octane players who can make big contributions to their level of success. Let’s take a look at the Seminoles’ upcoming freshmen class.

Scottie Barnes

Scottie Barnes was one of the dynamic pieces that made Montverde Academy successful this past season. His energy on the floor seemed to motivate his teammates to play even harder on the floor. Barnes is a very unselfish Power Forward who is strong in the post and loves the fastbreak.

When in transition, Barnes is like a freight train that is looking to bulldoze through everyone in front of him. He’s so talented on the break that he can find the open man or get an easy lay-in for himself.

Barnes made the perfect decision in choosing Florida State. Over the past few seasons, Coach Hamilton has built an organization that is gritty and tough-minded. Barnes’ competitive fire fits right into what the Seminoles have on their team and it can go a long way in his collegiate career. It will be exciting to watch Barnes transition from High School to College very soon.
