Welcome to Pulled Pork Day!

Pork. Cooked. Slowly. Celebrate this classic Texas-style dish on National Pulled Pork Day. And bring along your favorite barbecue sauce! Fun fact: Back in 2016, Sonny’s BBQ set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Serving of Pulled Pork” — a hefty 2,012 pounds of this dish. Eventually, Sonny’s decided — along with other BBQ industry members — to designate October 12 as National Pulled Pork Day. So no matter what your sauce preferences may be — tomato-based, mustard-based, vinegar-based, etc. — just be sure to slather it on to help celebrate.

Syracuse Basketball: Freshman Kadary Richmond is a ‘really good fit’ (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and journalists are raving about freshman Kadary Richmond.

Syracuse basketball has an intriguing group of freshmen on its 2020-21 roster, a line-up that features 13 scholarship players, and head coach Jim Boeheim and industry observers are heaping praise on promising freshman Kadary Richmond.

Boeheim recently said that the 6-foot-5 Richmond is perhaps the team’s most-impressive newbie in its 2020 class, calling him a “really good point guard.” Interestingly enough, Richmond’s bio on cuse.com lists him as a forward, although he can also suit up at both point guard and shooting guard, too. Talk about a versatile guy!

That flexibility should enable Richmond to hopefully gain a decent amount of minutes in Boeheim’s rotation in the upcoming campaign, and it will prove intriguing to see where Richmond earns the most run on the court, position-wise.

Syracuse Basketball: Don’t have a good feeling about Micawber Etienne (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is still in the mix for 2021 four-star center Micawber Etienne, but some recent reports don’t sit well about the Orange’s prospects.

Syracuse basketball has recruited 2021 four-star center Micawber Etienne for quite some time and made him a high-priority in this cycle.

Recent media articles say that the Orange remains in the running for the 6-foot-10, top-65 prospect, although Etienne has a slew of offers from high-major squads. He has spoken positively in the past about his relationship with ‘Cuse coaches, particularly Gerry McNamara.

He’s also a senior at the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., a powerhouse prep-school program that has sent multiple guys to the Hill in recent seasons.

I don’t pretend to reside within Etienne’s inner circle or possess any inside information on his decision-making as it pertains to his recruitment. Yet my gut is telling me that, when all is said and done, I don’t believe that Etienne is ultimately going to select Syracuse basketball as his collegiate destination.

Syracuse Basketball: 2022 3-star SF Randi Ovalle is intriguing prospect - BACKBENCHERS (backbenchers.com)

Syracuse basketball has shown interest in 2022 small forward Randi Ovalle, and hopefully the Orange will extend him an offer.

The national recruitment for 2022 prospect Randi Ovalle continues to expand, and Syracuse basketball has shown an interest in him, according to information provided on recruiting Web sites as well as social media.

The 6-foot-7 Ovalle, a three-star small forward who is now a junior at the Victory Christian Center School in Charlotte, N.C., has collected nearly a dozen scholarship offers, and many more should arrive for him in the near future.

According to a review of various recruiting services, Ovalle’s offers at present are from Illinois, Mississippi State, Washington State, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Montana State, Fresno State, UC Riverside, Pacific, Grand Canyon and Cal State Fullerton.

Dion Waiters wins NBA Finals with Lakers, first time for a former Syracuse star since 1980 (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

A former Syracuse University men's basketball star is celebrating an NBA Finals Championship win Sunday night.

Dion Waiters, a standout guard with the Orange between 2010-12, will receive a championship ring after being added to the Lakers roster late in the year.

Waiters did not play in the 2020 NBA Finals due to a coach's decision, but did help the Lakers while playing in the Orlando bubble since August.

The former Orange star averaged 11.9 points per game in seven games played with the Lakers in 2020.

Waiters began the season with the Miami Heat back in November 2019, but was later waived by the team following a series of ongoing disputes.

He would later land with the Lakers after the franchise experienced injuries late in the year, but was not called upon to serve a role in the Finals.

Regardless, Waiters is the first former Syracuse basketball player to earn an NBA Finals ring since Marty Byrne did so in 1980, also with the Lakers.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer buys $6 million house on Skaneateles Lake (PS; $; Moriarty)

Jason Newsted, who played bass guitar for Metallica during the heavy metal band’s glory days, has bought a home on Skaneateles Lake for $6.1 million.

Jason C. Newsted Revocable Trust, of which Newsted is trustee, bought the waterfront estate on the east side of the lake on Sept. 24, 2020, according to a deed filed with the Onondaga County Clerk’s office.

The seller was John D. Mezzalingua, founder and CEO of JMA Wireless in Clay. Newsted signed a $3.9 million mortgage on the property.

It appears likely that Newsted will use the home as a summer residence. He and his wife, artist Nicole Newsted, have been long-time residents of Jupiter, Florida, according to The Palm Beach Post.
