Welcome to World Osteoporosis Day!

World Osteoporosis Day takes place during Bone and Joint Action Week, along with World Arthritis Day, World Spine Day, World Trauma Day, and World Pediatric Bone and Joint Day. The week was created by the United States Bone and Joint Initiative to "improve prevention of bone and joint disorders, and the quality of life for those affected," and the day was organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation. The day launches a year-long campaign to raise awareness globally about osteoporosis, so that people are made aware of ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat it and metabolic bone disease. Events take place in the months leading up to and following the day, and activities happen in about 90 countries.

One in three women and one in five men, over the age of 50, will experience fractures because of the disease. The disease can weaken bones to such an extent that a bump, sneeze, or sudden movement can cause a fracture. This can cause extreme pain, cause long-term disability, and even be life threatening. Even though there have been great medical advances, only a small minority of those with fractures receive treatment.

Syracuse basketball interest in 2024 F Derik Queen, game likened to Melo (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is taking a look at 2024 forward Derik Queen, who could end up one of the top players nationally in his class.

Syracuse basketball is displaying interest in 2024 forward Derik Queen out of Baltimore, whose “skill and size at this stage of his development is reminiscent” of Orange legend Carmelo Anthony, according to a report.

Queen, a 6-foot-8 power forward entering his freshman campaign at the Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore, already has high-major offers from former Big East Conference rival Georgetown, fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech, Maryland, LSU and Arizona State, according to his bios on the primary recruiting services’ Web sites.

Additionally, Queen is garnering interest from three other ACC schools in Syracuse basketball, Pittsburgh and Florida State, which won the league’s regular-stanza crown during the 2019-20 term.

Dushawn London, a national analyst for 247Sports, wrote in an article that while this recruiting service hasn’t come out with rankings for the 2024 class yet, 247Sports has watched Queen on several occasions of late.

London says of Queen that he “has a developed post game while still showing off his ball skills in the open court. He has great size and poses matchup issues with how versatile he can be. Queen has unlimited potential and if he continues to work on his guard skills he can be one of top players in the class.”

Recruiting Report: Derik Queen (2024) | Prep Hoops (prephoops.com; Giacubeno)

It’s always critical to be very careful projecting how good a freshman will be at the high school level, especially when he is attending a school such as St. Frances Academy, who was considered as a top 15 team in the country last season. However, 2024 forward Derik Queen has given much reason to believe that he’ll not only be considered a standout among his fellow 2024 classmates in the DMV area, but the country as a whole.

Queen is a legit 6-foot-8 and comes equipped with guard-like ball-handling skills. So often in today’s high school ranks we see players of Queen’s stature try and fill the role at point forward, but it doesn’t come as natural as he makes it look. This summer with Team Thrill, Queen showcased not only his ability to put the ball on the floor, but also his vision on penetration and advanced IQ to find teammates for open looks.

“It was a fun and good experience because it was my first time getting to play against high school talent,” Queen said as he reflected on this summer. “I learned a lot and it also helped me increase my speed. This level is played at a faster pace.”

Queen is still very much growing into his body. He’ll get quicker and more fluid as the years pass, but the ability to shift his defender with a crossover or hesitation as his size and age are certainly something to admire. When he isn’t finding teammates with crafty no-look passes, Queen is finishing and using his length around the paint. He isn’t an explosive athlete at this point, but that should follow as his body continues to mature. Nevertheless, he is a plus rebounder with good timing on grabbing misses at their peak and pushing the tempo himself.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange ‘should be more than a spoiler’ in the ACC (itlh; Adler)

CBS Sports experts have Syracuse basketball in a respectable position within the ACC.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein recently forecast Syracuse basketball to finish at No. 7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and now a group of his CBS Sports colleagues, collectively, is placing the Orange in the exact same position.

Coming in at No. 7 is roughly where the bevy of national commentators and writers to date have arranged the ‘Cuse within the ACC’s 15 members. Some are putting Syracuse basketball at No. 8, No. 9 or maybe even No. 10.

While I haven’t seen a lot of experts, or frankly many at all, give the Orange a predicted landing spot better than seventh, I’m on record in saying that I believe Syracuse basketball will wind up at No. 6 in the conference when all is said and done, behind Virginia, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Louisville.

The new CBS Sports picks have Virginia at No. 1 as well, followed by Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Syracuse basketball, Georgia Tech, Clemson, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Boston College and Wake Forest.

Syracuse basketball is placed at No. 7 within the ACC, per a CBS Sports article.

In the CBS Sports piece, Matt Norlander has this to say about the Orange. “Syracuse opened its season almost a year ago with a home loss to Virginia that was historic, scoring just 34 points. Yet Jim Boeheim managed to get his team to the No. 21-ranked offensive in college hoops by the end of the season, and that with a roster that had its skeptics. The depth of the ACC starts to become a question right about here, but Syracuse should be more than a spoiler. Buddy Boeheim and Joseph Girard will have to carry this team, now that Elijah Hughes has moved on for a pro career. SU has seven freshmen on the roster and Boeheim doesn’t play a deep bench, so this will be interesting.”

Syracuse Basketball: Target Arthur Kaluma gets more UNLV predictions (itlh; Adler)

It’s looking less and less likely that 2021 four-star forward Arthur Kaluma will select Syracuse basketball.

The chances that 2021 four-star power forward Arthur Kaluma ends up choosing Syracuse basketball appear pretty somber at this juncture.

The 6-foot-8 Kaluma, a senior at Dream City Christian School in Glendale, Ariz., has the Orange in his top eight, along with Arizona State, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC and UNLV.

In recent days, at least four recruiting analysts and industry experts have logged predictions for Kaluma in the direction of UNLV, so it appears that the Rebels are in terrific shape with the top-60 player in the 2021 cycle.

I won’t count the ‘Cuse completely out until Kaluma reveals his collegiate destination, but things are not looking so good for the Orange.

This is a bummer, because Kaluma is an ultra-talented prospect, and earlier this year there proved a lot of chatter about him potentially heading to the ‘Cuse.

Arthur Kaluma, a 2021 four-star forward and high-priority target for Syracuse basketball, is receiving a lot of UNLV buzz.

Bombs Away! The ACC’s Most Prolific Three Point Shooters From 2019-20 (DBR; Jacobs)

These days it’s the rare team that relies heavily on a single player to deliver the long-range blows.

Having one player dominate 3-point shooting for his team in the manner of Dennis Scott, the 1990 ACC Player of the Year, is now more the exception than the rule. The Georgia Tech wing took 51.3 percent of the threes (and made 52.7 percent) on a Yellow Jacket squad that reached the ’90 Final Four. “So much of their offense is Scott’s 3-pointers,” said Mike Krzyzewski, whose team reached the same Final Four.

Scott’s 27.7 points per game remain the highest average among ACC players over the past 45 seasons.

There have been a few similarly singular shooters over the intervening years. Most recently guard Marcus Paige accounted for 46.3 percent of the long-range attempts on a 26-12 North Carolina squad widely knocked for its one-dimensional perimeter punch.

Paige, a heady all-around player repeatedly praised by coach Roy Williams as a “tough nut”, took 238 threes in 2015 and made 39.5 percent. Next on the team was freshman Justin Jackson with 92 tries and 30.4 accuracy.

Aliza Seeber: Effective leadership doesn’t require the loudest voice in the room (PS; $; Linhorst)

SparkOrange was the highest ranked of five Syracuse companies on Inc. magazine’s list of America’s fastest growing companies in 2020. The ranking in August reported SparkOrange had a 650 percent three-year growth rate. It was SparkOrange’s second year in a row on the list.

Aliza Seeber co-founded the company in January 2013 with Derek Vargas. Their idea was to start “a socially conscious tech business in Syracuse that would create jobs in the area for years to come.” They started SparkOrange in The Tech Garden, moved to space above Kitty Hoynes in Armory Square, and in August moved to The Dietz building at 225 Wilkinson St., just west of downtown Syracuse. Covid-19 has meant that everyone mostly works remotely. Seeber is the managing partner and chief technology officer.

SparkOrange is a “Salesforce consulting partner” and marries technology to business needs. What does that entail?

“Salesforce is a tool you purchase, like Microsoft Word or other types of tools if you’re familiar with an old Access database or SQL or things like that,” Seeber said. "It’s a customer relationship management system. You buy it to manage data and different business processes.
