Welcome to National Nachos Day!

Nachos are celebrated today! They trace their roots to the border of Mexico and Texas. One day in 1943, the wives of ten U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass, Texas, crossed the border into Piedras Negras, Mexico. When they stopped in to eat at Club Victoria, chef Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya threw together a snack to give them and called it "Nachos Especiales". In 1954 his recipe was published in St. Anne's Cookbook, by the Church of the Redeemer in Eagle Pass.

There are many variations of nachos. "Ballpark nachos"—covered with jalapenos and melted cheese—were invented by Sal and Margarita Manriquez, and are now popular at sports stadiums. Sal Manriquez started selling them as "Margarita's State Fair Nachos" at the State Fair in Dallas in 1964, and in 1975 asked to sell them at Arlington Stadium, where the Texas Rangers then played. Manriquez was turned down and later found out that the stadium was selling a version of his nachos anyway.

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander made a really silly comment about Syracuse basketball in 2020-21, if you ask me.

Matt Norlander and his colleagues at CBS Sports are excellent analysts and journalists, and I follow their coverage of Syracuse basketball and Orange football on a daily basis.

However, and I mean no disrespect, but Norlander’s assessment of the ‘Cuse in a new piece where he projects the top-68 teams for the upcoming campaign is way, way off.

Norlander ranks Syracuse basketball No. 53 around the country. That’s fine. I think it’s too low, personally, with my projecting of the Orange in the pre-season arriving somewhere between No. 25 and No. 35.

But the low 50s isn’t abhorrent, given that former star forward Elijah Hughes, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading scorer in 2019-20, left the Hill after his redshirt-junior term for the pros.

Then again, KenPom does arrange the ‘Cuse at No. 29 in its pre-season rankings for 2020-21, which is encouraging, particularly given the defensive rating that Syracuse basketball received.

So Norlander is fine with his No. 53 ranking for the Orange, as far as I’m concerned, but check out what he said about the ‘Cuse in his write-up.

“Adios to Elijah Hughes, so what will Jim Boeheim and company do about keeping SU’s offense in the near-upper-class of power-conference hoops? Buddy Boeheim is growing into a reliable scorer but the huge question with Cuse is how this team jells given that seven freshmen have been welcomed into the fold. Marek Dolezaj (good in spots) and Joe Girard (key sophomore season ahead) are back, but this team could have the thinnest rotation in the ACC.”

Syracuse basketball 2022 targets significantly climb, fall in new rankings (itlh; Adler)

See where Syracuse basketball 2022 targets reside in the updated 247Sports national ratings.

Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Dior Johnson, a five-star point guard, remains unchanged at No. 3 overall in this cycle per the latest national rankings from 247Sports for the class, but some other Orange prospects have made major moves in one direction or another.

Four-star shooting guard Roddy Gayle Jr., a high-priority target for the ‘Cuse in this class, is down 24 placements to No. 54 nationally. Four-star center Donovan Clingan, another huge priority for Syracuse basketball coaches, fell 17 positions to No. 57.

Four-star point guard J.J. Starling, a Central New York product who now suits up for a powerhouse prep-school program in Indiana, dropped 13 spots to No. 66.

Conversely, four-star small forward Ty Rodgers is up 15 positions to No. 74, while fellow four-star small forward Kamari Lands is up a half-dozen placements to No. 33.

Other Syracuse basketball targets are making smaller shifts in the new 247Sports national ratings for the 2022 class.

Five-star small forward Jarace Walker is now at No. 8 according to 247Sports, as he fell a modest two spots. Walker goes to the same prep school in Florida as Orange 2021 commit Benny Williams, who is also a five-star small forward.

Five-star guard Zion Cruz is up one position to No. 21, while Orange big-time priority target Chance Westry, a four-star guard, dropped two placements to No. 29 nationally.

CBB Review ACC basketball season preview | CBB REVIEW (cbbreview.com; Bass)

ACC basketball looks to improve from top to bottom this season. We preview the conference’s teams and top players.

Against all odds, college basketball is slated to return on November 25, just a mere 20 days away. College basketball fans have been through a lot, having their coveted tournaments stripped away in the blink of an eye just to be left sport-less for months, but the suffering is finally over. Through much discussion, college basketball is set to return, and whether or not it looks pretty, it is what the fans deserve. For ACC basketball fans, this can’t come sooner.

Over the next three weeks, our team at CBB Review will get you ready for this unusual season with conference previews, starting with college hoop’s premier conference: the ACC. With eligible transfers, players opting out, and overall chaos, with the addition of how crazy 2020 is in general, it is safe to say the ACC could very well have a down year. But given history and the strength of the coaches and players, the conference is slated for another year of dominance.

Below are the predictions for the final standings, awards, and outlooks for each team in the ACC. Brace yourself, it will be a wild year of college basketball, just what every fan has been waiting for.

15. Wake Forest

Steve Forbes is taking over Danny Manning’s squad in which he inherits no players who averaged more than 10 points per contest last year for the Demon Deacons. Daivien Williamson and Ian DuBose both averaged double-digit points over their careers in mid-majors, but the ACC is another best. Wake Forest will struggle this season, and it is very possible it goes without a win in conference.

14. Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech returns two top scorers in Michael Devoe and Jose Alvarado, which is huge for the Yellow Jackets. However, the two top scorers only shot 38% from beyond the arc last season. In a three-point reliant league, it is imperative for top dogs to be efficient from the field. In no way is 38% a bad figure, but it cannot lead a subpar shooting team to win in a three-point era.

13. Boston College

Jim Christian’s job could very well be on the line this season with a BC team that has a high ceiling and low floor. Boston College loses two key pieces in Derryck Thornton and Nik Popovic, but does have key transfers that can contribute immediately. Last season, BC players combined for 67 missed games, more than any other team in the conference. With very little depth, excluding transfers who did well at their previous schools, one key injury could be the difference between being on and off the bubble for Boston College.

12. Pittsburgh

In a league with elite coaching, it is starting to become clear that Jeff Capel was highly sought after not because of his talent, but rather the fact that he was a part of Coach K’s staff. In two years, Pitt has made little progress and Capel has been very disappointing in Pitt. However, there is a bright light for Panther fans, as last year’s two top scorers in Xavier Johnson and Justin Champagnie are back in action. Xavier Johnson is the difference-maker for this squad, as he is a dynamic playmaker who can win games late.

11. Clemson

Aamir Sims is an ACC basketball first-team contender this year, but Clemson may be a tournament pretender. Sims and John Newman III are the only two players with serious experience, which can prove detrimental late in the season, especially during the postseason. Clemson also dealt with plenty of injuries last season, bringing to question how players will hold up during this crazy season. The Tigers are similar to BC in that they are always an upset threat but have a very low floor. Brad Brownell is a slightly better coach than Jim Christian, giving Clemson a slight edge. But if Sims does not continue to break out and take over his team, Clemson could easily fall to the bottom tier of the league.

10. Syracuse

It’s starting to look like Jim Boeheim’s best teams are in his past. Syracuse just cannot shoot the three-ball well enough to be a legit contender in this league. Sure, with the deadly zone and high recruits, the Orange is always a scare, but they simply do not produce enough offense to compete against teams like Duke and UNC. The Orange shot 32% from three a year ago and were outrebounded by their opponents on average. Second chance points win games, and Syracuse needs to rebound better to break through and become a powerhouse in this league. The bright spot for Syracuse is Joe Girard III, who had a solid season for the Orange last season. Girard is poised to break out, as he was a dynamic scorer in high school and is a natural playmaker.

2 Upstate NY golf courses among top 100 in the U.S. (PS; $; Axelson)

New York is packed with incredible golf courses, but the Long Island and downstate links seem to get all the love. If you’re a golfer from Upstate New York, you know the rest of the state is full of amazing courses as well, and two of them are getting the recognition they deserve from Golf Magazine.

Oak Hill (East) in Rochester and Glens Falls Country Club in Queensbury were both ranked among the top 100 Golf Courses in the U.S. in Golf Magazine’s latest list, alongside such prestigious golfing venues as Pine Valley in New Jersey and Cypress Point in California.

Here’s what Golf Magazine had to say about ranking Oak Hill (East), originally designed by Donald Ross in 1921, as #40 on its list:

“This classic parkland layout has hosted multiple majors and a Ryder Cup. A recent renovation made the suburban Rochester marvel even better, bringing it back in line with Donald Ross’s original design. Architect Andrew Green overhauled the 5th, 6th and 15th holes, cut back trees and re-worked greens throughout the course. The new drainage system allows for faster putting surfaces — expect higher scores (and better sightlines) at the 2023 PGA Championship.”

And here’s why #86, Glens Falls Country Club, also designed by Donald Ross in 1920, made the list:

“With so much content and information available in 2020, stumbling across a “hidden gem” has become progressively more difficult. Yet, this Ross course 30 minutes north of Saratoga Springs was off the radar as recently as five years ago. Situated between the Adirondacks and Green Mountains, the short par-4 5th with its “top hat” green through the par-3 9th to a Volcano green complex are as good a series of Ross holes as you’ll find. The excitement doesn’t let up with the course finishing with its penultimate hole across hilly land to a green in a saddle and a par-3 finisher played across the edge of a lake.”

For Tom Haggerty, the longtime head professional at Glens Falls Country Club, the ranking was a great honor.

Quincy Guerrier update: SU forward has leg soreness but otherwise feels great (PS; $; Ditota)

He no longer experiences the burning, aching pain that kept him up nights. Quincy Guerrier still feels discomfort. Occasionally, he pauses during a Syracuse practice to visit athletic trainer Brad Pike to stretch the soreness in his legs.

Guerrier attributes the leg tenderness to five months of inactivity after learning he had a groin injury that could be fixed with surgery. The Syracuse basketball forward, going into his second year with the Orange, had surgery last June to correct a problem that plagued him last season. The injury limited his lateral mobility and jumping ability, he said, and prevented him from doing workouts to strengthen his core.
