Welcome to National Metal Day!

Throw on your leather jacket, turn up the stereo, and raise up those devil horns, it's National Metal Day! Proclaimed by VH1 Classic (which has since been replaced with MTV Classic), National Metal Day honors metal artists and music. The first observance took place on November 11, 2011. For 11 days during the lead up to the day, VH1 Classic showed concerts, movies, videos, and specials related to metal music. The 11-day metal celebration culminated with the premiere of the first installment of the metal documentary series Metal Evolution. A similar run of programming was aired the second year. For example, during the lead up to the day in 2012, VH1 Classic premiered America's Hard 100, a 10-hour-long countdown of the top 100 rock songs of all time as voted by viewers. That Metal Special, a special hosted by the hosts of The Metal Show, as well as a premiere of Judas Priest at the US Festival 1983, were shown on National Metal Day in 2012.

Why all the 11s? Why is the holiday held on the 11th day of the 11th month, and why was it first celebrated in 2011? In This is Spinal Tap, the 1984 mockumentary about a fictitious metal band named Spinal Tap, guitarist Nigel Tufnel, played by Christopher Guest, talks to documentary filmmaker Marty Di Bergi, played by Rob Reiner, about how his amps go up to 11 instead of 10. Di Bergi asks if the amps are louder than other amps, and later asks, "Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder?" Tufnel responds, "These go to 11." Explaining the exchange doesn't do it justice—it needs to be watched. It should be of no surprise that VH1 Classic has aired This is Spinal Tap as part of their programming for National Metal Day.

Syracuse Basketball: Most exciting, intriguing ACC games for Orange (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has a ton of interesting ACC clashes on the horizon.

Syracuse basketball and the rest of its Atlantic Coast Conference peers learned their league schedules for the 2020-21 season on Tuesday, as the upcoming campaign approaches roughly two weeks before it commences.

I would characterize the Orange’s ACC calendar as challenging for sure, but not ridiculously tough nor particularly soft. As I’ve said in the past, I believe that the ‘Cuse is primed for a top-six finish in the conference, and I still feel that way after seeing the team’s ACC docket.

Syracuse basketball will suit up twice against regulars Boston College and Pittsburgh, as well as Clemson, Louisville, N.C. State and North Carolina.

The Cardinals and the Tar Heels will likely arrive in the ACC’s top tier, while the Tigers and Wolfpack, like the Orange, should hover around the March Madness bubble. The Eagles and the Panthers aren’t expected to prove super strong.

The ‘Cuse hosts 2019-20 ACC champion Florida State, along with a good Miami team, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. Conversely, the Orange will make trips to Duke, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

Syracuse Basketball 2020-21 Schedule (SI; McAllister)

It is a time unlike any other, with the starts of seasons delayed due to a pandemic after many were cancelled the year before. The Syracuse basketball 2019-20 season ended abruptly following a blowout win over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament. It has been over eight months since the Orange took the court, and now they are set to do so once again in just a couple of weeks.

But with the pandemic that cancelled the end last season, the schedule release was delayed as well. On Tuesday, the ACC released the basketball schedule which finally gave Syracuse fans a look at the Orange's path to an NCAA Tournament berth. Here is the schedule.

November 27, 2020: Bryant
December 10, 2020: at Rutgers
December 12, 2020: at Boston College
December 22, 2020: Notre Dame

Joe Biden Is Potentially Giving a College Football Program a Big Recruiting Advantage - Sportscasting | Pure Sports (sportscasting.com; Wysong)

According to Sports Illustrated’s All Syracuse, Biden has become the first Syracuse alum to be named as the president-elect. He ultimately graduated from law school there in 1968. That is not his only tie to the school, though, as his late son Beau Biden also graduated from law school there in 1994, and his late first wife, Neilia Hunter, went to Syracuse as well.

He has since returned to the school multiple times for commencement and to give other speeches, according to Sports Illustrated. He has also supported the school’s sports teams over the years, as Biden even gave the Orange basketball team a pep talk after their loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 2016 Final Four.

“What a hell of a run,” Biden said, according to Bleacher Report. “Thank you for all the joy you gave us this year.”

2022 guard Dior Johnson decommits from Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Five-star class of 2022 point guard Dior Johnson announced his decommitment from Syracuse via Twitter on Tuesday evening.

Johnson, ranked the No. 3 player in his class by 247 Sports, committed to the Orange back in January in his sophomore season. It was SU’s highest commitment since Carmelo Anthony in 2002. But things have changed significantly for Johnson since that time.

Dior Johnson Decommits from Syracuse Basketball – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

When Dior Johnson, a five-star recruit in the class of 2022, committed to Syracuse Men’s Basketball last February, it came as a surprise. Well, here’s maybe less of a surprise– Johnson has decommitted from Syracuse.

Syracuse will remain on his list of schools, but he is opening his recruitment back up. Reports say this was a mutual decision and both sides, including Jim Boeheim and Gerry McNamara, are okay with the move.

Johnson was Syracuse’s highest ranked recruit since Carmelo Anthony. It was just too good to be true.

Syracuse basketball recruiting: What we’re hearing about future classes (the athletic; $; Gutierrez)

Top players in the 2022 class such as Dior Johnson will have a decision to make: skip school for the pros, or enroll in college? Whether Johnson, a five-star guard, sticks with his verbal commitment to Syracuse remains to be seen. But one potential development has become increasingly clear it won’t happen.

After enrolling at Oak Hill (Virginia) Academy, Johnson suffered a stress fracture in his right foot and flew home to be with his mother in Los Angeles, where he has been working out. He enrolled last month at Corona Centennial High. But there is concern regarding his academic record given the fact that he’s transferred high school several times. Although frequent movement isn’t all that uncommon among top high school players, a person familiar with the situation says that Johnson meeting NCAA eligibility has “gotten more difficult, but it’s possible.” The person added: “Many top players have done it before.”

A sweet new start: Peace, Love and Cupcakes brings signature desserts to Armory Square (PS; Guzman)

A storefront in downtown Syracuse known for desserts has a new baker behind the counter.

Peace, Love and Cupcakes opened last weekend at the West Fayette Street location formerly operated by Sugar & Co and Bittersweet Wine Bar & Desserts.

Owner Rebecca Riley turned her baking hobby into a full-time business over the past decade. Riley said she was crushed when she had to close her first location on Burnet Avenue.

But during the first hours of service in Armory Square on Saturday, she was beaming behind a mask with a cupcake design.

“It’s one of those things that’s like, everything happens for a reason,” Riley said. “And people say it and you don’t want to believe it. And then you look back and I’m like, it definitely did because who doesn’t want to be in Armory Square? Who doesn’t want to have a spot downtown?”
