Welcome to National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs, and was created by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who also created days such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The goal of the day is to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs by creating awareness about the great numbers of them in animal shelters that are in need of a home. Mixed breed dogs make up the largest percentage of dogs that are abandoned and euthanized, and make up about 80% of dogs in shelters. In an effort to further raise awareness, National Mutt Day takes place on two days during the year. The hoped for result of the day is that people visit animal shelters and adopt a mixed breed dog, or possibly donate their time and money to shelters.

Syracuse Basketball: With Bourama Sidibe out, other big men must step up (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball won’t have starting center Bourama Sidibe for several weeks, and other big men need to fill the void.

Only one game into the 2020-21 season, and Syracuse basketball unfortunately saw senior starting center Bourama Sidibe go down with a knee injury.

First and foremost, let’s wish Sidibe a speedy recovery. A spokesman for the Orange program says that “Sidibe suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee” in the ‘Cuse one-point victory over Bryant last Friday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.

Surgery is needed for this type of injury, and Sidibe’s recovery time is estimated at four weeks, per Brad Pike, the ‘Cuse associate athletics director for sports medicine.

From SU: "Bourama Sidibe suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee during the game with Bryant. He is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, Dec. 1. According to associate a.d. for sports medicine Brad Pike, four weeks is a reasonable recovery estimate for this type of injury."

Head coach Jim Boeheim said after the Bryant contest that senior power forward Marek Dolezaj will start at center should Sidibe be out for a period of time. That slides junior Alan Griffin and sophomore Quincy Guerrier into the starting forward spots. Guerrier, by the way, started at forward versus Bryant, along with Dolezaj.

Leaky Black and North Carolina spent last season struggling in late-game situations, fumbling away leads and failing to make a needed play at the most critical of moments.

Maybe the 14th-ranked Tar Heels have learned from that.

Black had a big driving basket at the 1:02 mark followed by a clinching free throw with 5.5 seconds left Tuesday to help UNC hold off Stanford 67-63, sending the Tar Heels to the championship game of the relocated Maui Invitational.

Freshman Caleb Love scored 16 points to lead the Tar Heels (3-0), who won despite 24 turnovers.

''I feel like we're battle-tested,'' Black said. ''I feel like we've been through everything we can possibly have been through going through last year. And I felt like we got some guys that's willing to learn and to fight when the going gets tough, and that's all you can ask for.''

Last year marked the first losing season of Hall of Famer Roy Williams' career, which included squandering numerous second-half leads with seven losses by four or fewer points.

Most notably, UNC blew a 10-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation against Clemson to lose in overtime for its first ever loss in Chapel Hill to the Tigers, along with blowing a 13-point lead in the final 4 1/2 minutes of regulation in an overtime loss to rival Duke.

This time, the Tar Heels won a game in which neither team led by more than three in the final 6 1/2 minutes until Black's late free throw.

Michigan State basketball gets elusive win at Duke, shows it can play with anyone (yahoo.com; Solari)

Tom Izzo wished there could have been people there to see his first win at Duke.

The Cameron Crazies. Michigan State fans. Heck, he even lamented the missing media.

But ...

“I know one thing,” Izzo said Tuesday night from Durham, North Carolina, “I'm not gonna put this as an asterisk.”

For the second time in 20 months, Izzo and the Spartans did what for so long had seemed impossible: beat Mike Krzyzewski and Duke. This time, for the first time in four tries, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

[ Windsor: MSU just beat Duke without scratching surface of its potential ]

No. 12 MSU rode its waves of mistakes and big runs, used lockdown defense and balanced scoring, then withstood a late flurry from the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to emerge from the Champions Classic with a 75-69 victory.

Positive rates change little in CNY orange, yellow zones (PS; Tampone)

The seven-day average of the percentage of people testing positive for the coronavirus inside Onondaga County’s orange zone fell slightly to 5.91% on Monday.

That’s down from 5.98% the day before. The positive rate’s seven-day average in the orange zone was 6.26% the week of Nov 8, 5.34% the week of Nov. 15 and 6.13% the week of Nov. 22.

In the county’s yellow zone, the positive rate’s seven-day average rose slightly to 5.17%, up from 5.13% the day before. The rate was 6.03% the week of Nov. 8, 4.5% the week of Nov. 15 and 5.09% the week of Nov. 22.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed both zones on portions of the county in November in response to rising cases. The zones both carry extra restrictions meant to help slow further spread of the virus.

Statewide, the percentage of people testing positive for the virus was 4.96% on Monday, up from 4.57% the day before.

For much of the summer and early fall, the positive rate in the state was around 1% and often even less. That was true in Onondaga County as well.

In Central New York as a whole, the positive test rate for the virus was 5.5% on Monday, up from 4.2% on Sunday. The region includes Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties.

To exit an orange zone, the seven-day average of the positive test rate inside the zone must fall below 2% for three days at the end of a 10-day decline. That’s in more populated areas like the city of Syracuse.

It’s 3% for less populated areas like the rest of Onondaga County.

To exit a yellow zone, the positive rate’s seven-day average must fall below 1.5% for three days at the end of a 10-day decline in a bigger city like Syracuse. For less populated areas, it’s 2%.
