Welcome to Bacon Day!
According to the Bacon Day website, the day was created by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard. They came up with the day as a way to celebrate bacon and The Simpsons. In The Simpsons episode "I Love Lisa," Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?" This is how the creators of the day tied the celebration of two things they love together.
So what's the story of bacon? Bacon is a popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

Orange Watch: Part II of past delays for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: After the Syracuse football team joined Boston College as the only two ACC teams not to miss a scheduled football game this past season due to pandemic-related issues, the basketball Orange will miss a total of three consecutive conference games through this coming weekend, due to New York state-mandated quarantining and testing protocols. SU hopes to resume play Jan. 6 hosting Florida State.
This is a continuation of a look back at several Syracuse games that were delayed in a particular season due to weather or extraordinary circumstances. Part I, which ran on Tuesday, covers from 1980 to 2000, with 2000-present below:
2000: A tragic dormitory fire on the Seton Hall campus in West Orange, N.J. on Jan. 22 that killed three people and injured some 60 others, caused the cancellation of No. 4 ranked Syracuse’s game against the Pirates in the Dome.
Rescheduled for just over two weeks later, the Hall, coached by Tommy Amaker, shocked SU 69-67 to end an opening-season 19-game winning streak.
SHU’s Darius Lane hit a dagger-shot three-pointer with 0:39 left for the two-point margin, then the Orange’s last chances came on a missed Preston Shumpert trey, and inside shots by Etan Thomas and Ryan Blackwell that missed the mark, sending a large crowd home unhappy.
2012: Guess who won the last Carrier Classic? Hint: It’s a trick question.

Reliving the year of Syracuse Athletics during summer months. The Orange went on a basketball recruiting heater in early June that landed Benny Williams and Frank Anselem. Plus, Boeheim's Army entered the TBT bubble to become the first major four sport to return to action. Also, with the college football season up in the air, the Orange were major leaders in getting the proper protocols in place to get the season underway and deserve more credit for doing so. CNY’s best restaurants in 2020: Our critics pick their favorites (PS; $; Miller)
No one will argue that 2020 left a lot to be desired. But we still had to eat. So let’s give a huge thanks to all the Central New York restaurants that kept us fed and kept us happy.
We (Jared Paventi, Jane Woodman and Charlie Miller) visited well over 75 restaurants this year that had no choice but to adjust how how they served their fine food to us. The dining rooms were restricted to half of their occupancy. These trained chefs suddenly had to plate their creations into Styrofoam. And yet they did it, and they did it well.
Here are some of our favorites from the year:
Beer Belly Deli & Pub
From Jared Paventi: We visited the Beer Belly Deli & Pub on Westcott Street just before Syracuse was placed in the orange zone this fall, where we feasted on beer-brined French fries, beer-infused mustard, beer-braised meat and, of course, beer.
The cozy little gastropub on Westcott Street offered us one of the best burgers we ate this year, made from its house chuck-brisket blend and then smashed on the flat-top grill.
Our November visit was spent in the outdoor courtyard on an unseasonably warm evening, which helped push it into our top five visits of 2020.
