National-Pig-Day-2018-FTR.jpg
Welcome to National Pig Day!

National Pig Day honors the domesticated pig. According to Mary Lynne Rave, who started National Pig Day with her sister Ellen Stanley in 1972, the purpose of the day is "to accord to the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals." Events where pigs are the focus are held at zoos, schools, farms, sporting events, and nursing homes across the United States, particularly in the Midwest. Some activities include having pig-themed parties where pink colored punch and pork are served, and pink ribbon pigtails are tied around trees. Pig-themed parades also are common. Some have interpreted the day as being a time to give pigs a break by not eating pork products, but others say it is the perfect day for eating bacon, ham, or pork chops.

Pigs are from the Suidae family of mammals; species include wild boars, warthogs, the pygmy hog, and the domesticated pig—the species focused on today. Pigs were one of the first domesticated animals, leaving their wild roots about 6,000 years ago in China. They were first brought to the New World by Hernando de Soto, in 1539.

2nd chances, 3s and another UNC big man: What to know about SU vs. UNC (PS; $; Waters)

In 2016, North Carolina and Syracuse met in the Final Four.

This year, it’s all about First Fours, Last Fours and Next Fours for the Tar Heels, and Wherefores for the Orange’s postseason dreams.

Syracuse (13-8 overall, 7-7 ACC) will host North Carolina (15-8, 9-5) on Monday night at the Carrier Dome in a game featuring two teams coming off decidedly different outcomes.

On Saturday, North Carolina boosted its chances of receiving an NCAA at-large bid with an impressive 78-70 win over Florida State. That was the Tar Heels’ second Quadrant 1 win of the season.

Syracuse, on the other hand, missed out on its final scheduled game against a Quad 1 opponent on Saturday with its 84-77 loss at Georgia Tech. The Orange is now 0-6 in Quad 1 games.

Nothing short of a run to the ACC tournament’s title game would seem to be enough to launch Syracuse back into the NCAA tournament picture.

North Carolina probably would cinch a bid with either a win at Syracuse tonight or a home win against rival Duke on Saturday.

Can Syracuse reverse the outcome of this year’s previous meeting with the Tar Heels? The Orange dropped an 81-75 decision in Chapel Hill back on Jan. 12.

The SU-UNC game will begin at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

Here are five key things to know about the matchup:

After an impressive 78-70 victory over 11th ranked Florida State, the UNC Basketball program has a quick turnaround before they face off against the Syracuse Orange on Monday night at the Carrier Dome.

The Tar Heels clawed their way back into the game against the Seminoles after being down by as much as 16 in the first half. The game gave Carolina a much-needed statement win and greatly improved the Heels tournament odds.

The Tar Heels have been inconsistent, to say the least, after falling flat and losing by 13 to a below .500 Marquette team, the Tar Heels quickly turned it around against the 11th ranked Seminoles on Saturday. But with two regular season games left, UNC will need to be on top of their game here in the final week and that begins on Monday.

Syracuse is still fighting for a tournament spot and they have a talented roster with an accomplished coach in Jim Boeheim. The Orange are currently 13-9 with a 7-7 record in the ACC, this puts them at 9th place in the conference, needing some wins and a deep run in the conference tournament to have a chance.

The Orange are coming off two back-to-back conference losses to Duke and Georgia Tech, the Orange will be aggressive and try to get a signature win for themselves. That said, Syracuse hasn’t won a game against Carolina at the Carrier Dome since 2014.

Syracuse is led by forward Alan Griffin and guard Buddy Boeheim, who both average just over 15 points per game. Behind these two are Quincy Guerrier and Marek Dolezaj who are both long forwards and lead the team in rebounding along with Griffin.

Syracuse Basketball: North Carolina will be a problem in interior for Orange (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has lost two straight, at Duke and at Georgia Tech, and now the Orange gets set to host North Carolina on Monday evening at 7 pm from the Carrier Dome as the 2020-21 regular season comes to a conclusion for the ‘Cuse this week.

The Tar Heels (15-8, 9-5) are coming off arguably their best win of this term, as UNC defeated Atlantic Coast Conference leader Florida State at home this past Saturday. North Carolina is presently tied with Clemson for fifth place in the league standings.

For the Orange (13-8, 7-7), meanwhile, it is currently hovering around the No. 9 spot in the ACC race. After its defeats at the hands of the Blue Devils and, most recently, Georgia Tech, Syracuse basketball is pretty far removed from the proverbial bubble for the 2021 Big Dance, according to bracketologists.

From my perspective, the ‘Cuse has to conquer the Tar Heels and Clemson, which the Orange plays in Central New York on March 3, before Syracuse basketball can realistically think of getting back onto the right side of the bubble.

Even then, the ‘Cuse may have to capture the ACC Tournament, or at least reach the title game, to re-enter the picture for the upcoming March Madness.

Syracuse basketball will face a huge challenge from the North Carolina big men.

In its seven-point loss to the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta over the weekend, the Orange allowed a whopping 50 points to Georgia Tech in the second half.

Head coach Jim Boeheim attributed the team’s poor performance after the intermission to the ‘Cuse playing sub-par interior defense, and Syracuse basketball also coughed up way too many turnovers that led to easy transition points for the Yellow Jackets.

I believe that the Orange can clean up its careless mistakes versus the Tar Heels, but I’m really concerned about the ‘Cuse defense in the paint.

Axe: Come on, New York. Let’s get fans back in Carrier Dome (PS; $; Axe)

Tiana Mangakahia’s legacy at Syracuse University will roar forever but her last moments in the Carrier Dome were greeted by the echoes of too few.

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers was there on Sunday, and he can certainly light up a room, but Mangakahia and her fellow seniors deserved whatever thunderous applause limited capacity could muster.

The Syracuse men’s and women’s lacrosse teams both pounded Top 10 opponents on Saturday at the Dome but had to generate their own noise to note the accomplishment.

The Syracuse men’s basketball team’s NCAA Tournament hopes are fading, but who knows what difference the lift from a live crowd could provide in its final two home games tonight against North Carolina and Wednesday against Clemson.

So what’s the hold up in getting fannies back in the cold metal bleachers at the Dome?

What else? Bureaucracy.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon tweeted Saturday night that Syracuse University has had a plan submitted for weeks to get fans back in the Dome.

McMahon noted New York state officials did a site visit to examine safety protocols but the state has not yet approved the testing plan.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ruled on Feb. 10 that stadiums and arenas across the state could reopen at 10% of their maximum capacity as early as Feb. 23, but local and state health department officials must first approve their plans for testing and safety protocols.

Fans have been reporting back to sporting events slowly but surely across the state and nationwide. It’s time to let them go back to the games in Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Justin Taylor talks how 2022 ‘big class’ for SU (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is pursuing numerous top-flight talents in its 2022 recruiting cycle, and among them is four-star wing Justin Taylor.

Taylor, a 6-foot-6 junior at the St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va., has on more than one occasion spoken highly of the Orange coaching staff and the program as a whole.

Some analysts believe that the ‘Cuse has an excellent chance at landing Taylor, although competition for him is really intense. He holds a range of high-major scholarship offers, including more recent ones from squads such as North Carolina, Providence and Virginia.

Recruiting guru Jake Weingarten, the founder of Stockrisers.com, has conducted an interview with Taylor that contains a bunch of interesting nuggets about the 2022 prospect and his recruiting process.

When asked by Weingarten which groups are “heavily in the mix,” Taylor said that “UNC, Virginia, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Indiana, and Georgetown contact me the most.”

Taylor told Weingarten that Big Ten Conference member Purdue is showing interest, and other recent interviews given by the 2022 wing note that fellow Big Ten Conference team Michigan is among those which have expressed interest in Taylor.

Syracuse basketball pursuing another 2022 PF in four-star Maliq Brown (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is heavily involved in the recruitment of 2022 five-star power forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, but now the Orange is in the mix for four-star Maliq Brown, who also suits up at power forward in this cycle.

The ‘Cuse recently offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-9 Brown, according to his Twitter page. Brown is a junior at the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va.

According to a review of various recruiting services, Brown’s other offers include from Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Penn State, TCU, VCU, Richmond, Old Dominion and Murray State. Per his bio on the 247Sports Web site, Brown also holds interest from a flood of additional high-major groups.

The 247Sports Composite rates Brown as four stars, while he is three stars, according to 247Sports and .

Nationally in the 2022 class, Brown is ranked No. 105 from the 247Sports Composite, as well as No. 20 at power forward and No. 6 in Virginia. The 247Sports recruiting service places him at No. 126 overall, No. 26 at power forward and No. 7 in Virginia. Finally, slots Brown at No. 142 in this cycle.

Syracuse Basketball: Five-star Brandon Huntley-Hatfield details his suitors (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball remains in hot pursuit of elite 2022 prospect Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, a five-star power forward who is rated in the top 10 nationally in his class by the bevy of recruiting services.

The 6-foot-9 Huntley-Hatfield, a junior at Scotland Campus in Scotland, Pa., has a group of six finalists that entails the Orange, along with Ole Miss, Kansas, Wake Forest, Tennessee and Auburn.

However, in a new blog post that he wrote for SI All-American, Huntley-Hatfield says that “Tennessee, Syracuse, Ole Miss and Auburn have been keeping in touch with me the most consistently right now.”

Additionally, recent reports from several recruiting analysts suggest that the co-favorites to potentially land Huntley-Hatfield could be Ole Miss, a Southeastern Conference squad, and the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse basketball got into his recruitment a bit later than other teams, with the Orange offering Huntley-Hatfield last December. In numerous interviews, the talented big man has spoken highly of the ‘Cuse coaching staff and the program as a whole.

ACC to use contact-tracing device (RX; HM)

ACC to use contact-tracing device

From the official ACC release of Friday, February 26, 2021...

ACC To Expand Use of KINEXON Contract Tracing Technology for Men's and Women's Tournaments
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that it will equip student-athletes, coaches and Tier 1 personnel at the ACC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments with a KINEXON SafeTag contact tracing device. The devices, which have been utilized by all 15 ACC member institutions throughout the regular season, are a component of KINEXON SafeZone, a cutting-edge digital solution to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
This season, all ACC men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes, coaches, and staff wore the devices while inside team facilities. Student-athletes also had the SafeTags sewn into jerseys or tucked into socks for in-game usage. The SafeTags measure the proximity between users to provide school medical officials accurate contact tracing data when an individual tests positive for the virus. To date, the technology has identified several high-risk close contacts of a positive case within the ACC. These high-risk contacts were quarantined and later tested positive, thus limiting the spread of the virus.

Syracuse alum Aaron Sorkin ties record with Golden Globes win (PS; $; Herbert)

Syracuse University alumnus Aaron Sorkin has tied a Golden Globe Awards record, thanks to his latest film, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Sorkin won best motion picture screenplay for the Netflix original movie at the 2021 Golden Globes on Sunday night. It’s his third victory in the category after previous wins for “The Social Network” in 2010 and “Steve Jobs” in 2015; Sorkin was also nominated five other times for writing “A Few Good Men,” “The American President,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Moneyball” and “Molly’s Game”.

He now has three Globes for best screenplay, tying Quentin Tarantino (”Pulp Fiction,” “Django Unchained,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Robert Bolt (”Doctor Zhivago,” “A Man for All Seasons,” “The Mission”).

This year, Sorkin beat out fellow nominees Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton for “The Father,” Jack Fincher for “Mank,” Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell “Promising Young Woman.” “Mank” director David Fincher downed a shot of alcohol when Sorkin was announced as the winner, beating out his late father.

Sorkin accepted the award from home as part of the Golden Globes’ largely virtual celebration due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said actor Sacha Baron Cohen, who won a Golden Globe for “Borat Subsequent Movie Film” and was nominated for his role as Abbie Hoffman in “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” emailed him a quote from Hoffman every day during the production.
