June-2-NATIONAL-ROCKY-ROAD-DAY-768x402.jpg
Welcome to National Rocky Road Day!

National Rocky Road Day celebrates chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts on June 2nd. In the United States, the most popular way to eat Rocky Road is ice cream.

Although Rocky Road comes in many variations, traditionally, the ice cream includes chocolate ice cream, nuts, and marshmallows. Today, there are variations with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and almonds.

People have been enjoying this delicious combination for many years. There are varying accounts of the origin of this ice cream, as there often is with the creation of something new. Sometime during the late 1920s, William Dreyer used inspiration from his partner Joseph Edy’s chocolate candy to make rocky road ice cream. Dryer did something he was probably told a hundred times not to do. He used his wife’s sewing scissors to chop up marshmallows and walnuts and added them to chocolate ice cream. Of course, it tasted good, so he was probably forgiven for using her good sewing shears for anything but fabric!

Syracuse’s recruiting calendar fills up in June as Class of ’22 prospects schedule official visits (PS; $; Waters)

After over a year of recruiting inactivity to the coronavirus pandemic, the NCAA’s recruiting dead period ended on Tuesday.

The end of the dead period means that college coaches can once again venture back out on the road and scout players at AAU events. Likewise, recruits can now schedule official visits to college campuses.

With the lifting of recruiting restrictions, college coaches and recruits are filling up their travel schedules.

Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim and his staff will host at least three, probably four and maybe even more recruits for official visits during the month of June, while at the same time the coaches and the recruits will be hitting AAU events across the country.

How long has it been since a high school recruit made an official visit to Syracuse? The Class of ’22 prospects will be the first to see the renovated version of the Carrier Dome, including its new roof and humongous scoreboard.

Here is a rundown of Syracuse’s recruiting targets and their plans for campus visits:

Kamari Lands, Prolific Prep

Lands, a 6-foot-8 forward from Indianapolis, Ind., committed to Syracuse in April.

Lands, who attends Prolific Prep in Calif., is ranked No. 19 in the ’22 class by ESPN.com. He is ranked No. 30 on 247Sports.com.

With a commitment in hand, there’s no rush to get Lands onto the Syracuse campus. Lands will probably wait until the fall to schedule his visit, so he can observe a practice, see more of the current players and maybe even attend a game at the Carrier Dome.

Kyle Filipowski, Wilbraham & Monson Academy

Filipowski is a 6-foot-10 forward with terrific ball-handling skills, athleticism and a soft shooting touch.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star target G.G. Jackson national interest heats up (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball may have been the first team to offer a scholarship to 2023 four-star prospect G.G. Jackson, which came last August, but the amount of national interest for him is now growing on a steady basis.

Several recruiting analysts have noted of late that the 6-foot-8 power forward is shining on the AAU circuit, and his national rankings within the 2023 class absolutely could climb in the near future.

That, in turn, could lead to more offers for Jackson, who is a sophomore at Ridge View High School in Columbia, S.C. Most recruiting services, by the way, rate Jackson as four stars and in the top-30 to top-35 overall within his class.

As we’ve noted on a couple of occasions, besides the Orange, Jackson holds offers from teams such as N.C. State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Boston College and High Point.

Multiple media reports have indicated that fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member and blue-blood squad North Carolina is showing interest in Jackson.

Minnesota's Marcus Carr is still looking for a home...

Ranking college basketball's uncommitted transfers: Marcus Carr, Marcus Bagley facing NBA Draft decisions (cbssports.com; Cobb)

As the number of big-time players still in the transfer portal dwindles during college basketball's offseason, a few high-profile names still have key decisions to make on whether they intend to play college basketball next season. Most notably, Marcus Carr and Marcus Bagley will have to decide in the coming weeks whether they intend to remain in the NBA Draft or transfer to a new school.

Both players opted to enter the transfer portal in addition to testing the NBA Draft waters following the conclusion of their college seasons. The draft withdrawal deadline is July 19, which follows the combine from June 21-27 in Chicago.

More on transfers

Carr, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 19.4 points and 4.9 assists per game for Minnesota this past season and was an all-Big Ten performer as a redshirt junior. Bagley, a 6-foot-8 forward, appeared in just 12 games as a freshman for Arizona State but showed flashes of why he was ranked as the No. 29 overall player in the class of 2020 by the 247Sports Composite.

Other players are in the same situation, including former Maryland wing Darryl Morsell and former Rutgers guard Jacob Young. Here is a look at the top few remaining uncommitted transfers in the portal as college basketball plunges deeper into the offseason.

Sarah Robin of Punjabi Girl Catering with a pan of Aloo Keema (beef and potato curry) at the Syracuse Community Kitchen at With Love, 435 N. Salina St. With Love has reopened as a space for pop-up takeout and/or dining-in restaurants.Don Cazentre

With Love, an eclectic pop-up restaurant space, returns to Syracuse's North Side (PS; $; Cazentre)

The location is the same. So is the basic mission.

The With Love restaurant/kitchen at 435 N. Salina St. is back, but with some changes.

It first opened in 2016 as a teaching restaurant under the management of Onondaga Community College. The students were people who knew how cook but were seeking to learn the practical ins and outs of the restaurant business. Every six months or so, a new student-entrepreneur took over the kitchen. Each ran a restaurant starting with the words “With Love,” followed by the place where its cuisine originated (Pakistan, Somalia, Vietnam etc.)

The new version places less emphasis on formal education but has a renewed commitment to showcase various cuisines, many from Syracuse’s diverse refugee community. It also continues to provide practical experience for up-and-coming restaurant or food-business entrepreneurs.

It’s now called the Syracuse Community Kitchen at With Love and it’s under new management. OCC still owns the space, but the kitchen is run by the Allyn Family Foundation through its Syracuse Urban Partnership non-profit organization.

Those are the same organizations behind the new Salt City Market downtown. Many of that market’s food vendors got their local start at the old version of With Love.

Now, instead of the six-month student commitment, the individual vendors book space for as little as one day or for a selection of days over perhaps several weeks or months. The can offer take-out only, or set up indoor dining space, or both.
