Welcome to No Orange Clothes Day!

No Orange Clothes Day commemorates the day in 1784 when the wearing of orange was banned in the Netherlands, a country often informally called Holland. Such a thing seems unconscionable today, as orange is now seen as the unofficial color of the Netherlands, and is worn and displayed everywhere. The color has a long and varied history in the country, dating back to the sixteenth century.

Why did orange become associated with the Netherlands? Orange is the color of the Dutch royal family, and its association with them goes back to William of Nassau, who is also known as William the Silent or William of Orange. William became the Prince of Orange in 1544, at the age of eleven, when the principality of Orange—which had previously been a French principality—came under his control.

Class of ’22 recruit Chance Westry schedules official visit to Syracuse (report) (PS; $; Waters)

Chance Westry, a highly-regarded prospect in the 2022 class, will take an official campus visit to Syracuse University this weekend, according to recruiting analyst Andrew Slater.

Westry, a 6-foot-4 combo guard, attended Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif., this past year. He is originally from the Harrisburg, Pa., area.

Westry is rated as the No. 26 player in the ‘22 class by 247Sports.com. ESPN.com has him at No. 52 in its rankings for the class.

This will be his third official visit this month. He previously went to Nebraska and Auburn. He also has scholarship offers from Louisville, Florida, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, Miami, Pittsburgh and Penn State among many others.

Westry’s trip to Syracuse will coincide with that of Donovan Clingan, a 7-foot center from Bristol, Conn. Clingan recently visited Michigan and has also been to Connecticut.

NBA releases names invited to its draft combine; 2 former Syracuse players are not on list (PS; $; Ditota)

The NBA released Tuesday the names of 69 players who are expected to attend its Draft Combine in Chicago later this month.

The names of Quincy Guerrier and Alan Griffin are not on that list.

Guerrier played two seasons at Syracuse before declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft. He subsequently entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal and decided on Oregon as his next basketball destination. Griffin transferred to Syracuse from Illinois in 2020 and decided to leave college after the 2020-21 season for a professional career.

Guerrier, who elected to keep his options open, can return to college if he chooses.

Invitations to the NBA draft combine indicate which players NBA executives are interested in seeing in person for drills, possible 5-on-5 games and interviews.

Other players, including Colgate’s Jordan Burns, were invited to the NBA’s G League combine (June 19-20), from which a select number of players can earn invitations to the main combine that runs from June 21-27 at Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago.

Syracuse basketball, with latest offer, keeps recruiting nation’s capital hard (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has a long track record of recruiting top-flight prospects out of the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore markets. I’m personally good with this, since I grew up near Baltimore and have lived my entire adult life in our nation’s capital.

The list of Orange players and targets from these two regions is too long to name, but guys like Carmelo Anthony and C.J. Fair certainly come to mind.

Forward Woody Newton, by way of Mt. Zion Prep in Lanham, Md., played on the Hill for his freshman term before electing to transfer to Oklahoma State.

Additionally, 2021 five-star commit Benny Williams played at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Md., prior to transferring to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., for his senior campaign.

Williams and his friend, ‘Cuse 2022 high-priority target Justin Taylor, have suited up on the AAU circuit for D.C.-based Team Takeover. And a recent tweet that I came across suggests that Orange coaches may have offered a scholarship to an emerging high-school prospect who also competes for the Team Takeover organization.

Syracuse basketball remains aggressive recruiting in Washington and Baltimore.

According to a tweet from 365 Recruits, 2024 wing Donnie Freeman has offers from Syracuse basketball and Georgetown, along with interest from teams such as Louisville, Maryland, Villanova, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

JJ Starling Schedules Official Visit to Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Class of 2022 point guard JJ Starling will officially visit Syracuse the weekend of June 25th, AllSyracuse.com confirmed. Starling has already visited Maryland and will also visit UConn starting on the 28th.

"My relationship with them is a very strong relationship because I've known them for so long. It's my hometown," Starling said of Syracuse previously. "The relationship is definitely there and it's strong. They text a lot, just checking in what to see how I'm doing, but not too much that it's like they're bugging me or anything, which they're not of course. I definitely have a really strong relationship with coach G-Mac and coach Autry. It could be a variety of things. Sometimes they reach out to say 'we need you' or 'we really want you' but other times it could be in a joking manner. A few minutes ago, coach Autry reached out and we were talking about music. It's just little things like that."

In addition, Starling also picked up an offer from Duke on Tuesday, according to his Instagram story.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack discusses succession plan for Jim Boeheim’s eventual retirement (PS; $; Waters)

It may seem at times like Jim Boeheim is going to coach the Syracuse University men’s basketball team forever, but eventually Boeheim’s tenure will come to end.

Boeheim, who turns 77 in November, will enter his 46th season at the helm of his alma mater’s basketball program next season.

Normally, Boeheim’s retirement and SU’s plan for the future are topics to be avoided.

But in light of the recent retirement announcements of North Carolina’s Roy Williams and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Boeheim’s future and Syracuse’s plan for his successor were questions raised during a press conference with Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack on Wednesday.

“It is relevant when you see Coach Williams and Coach K step aside,’' Wildhack said.

Duke and North Carolina both went in-house, hiring assistant coaches Jon Scheyer and Hubert Davis, respectively. Neither Scheyer nor Davis has any head coaching experience at the college level.

Wildhack gave no indication as to whether he will lean toward hiring a member of Boeheim’s current coaching staff or look for an outside candidate.

Wildhack did mention each of Boeheim’s three current assistants, specifically noting associate head coach Adrian Autry and assistant Gerry McNamara.

“We’re very fortunate in our three assistants,’' Wildhack said. “Coach Autry (and) Coach McNamara, they will both be head coaches someday. I firmly believe both will be successful. Coach Griffin. Allen’s done a really good job since he’s been here. He doesn’t have quite the experience that Gerry or Adrian does, but we’ve got a great staff.’'

Syracuse basketball 4-star target to join top-60 J.J. Starling prep power (itlh; Adler)

A Syracuse basketball 2023 four-star prospect is transferring to the same prep-school program where Orange 2022 high-priority target J.J. Starling also plays, according to several media reports.

For one, national analyst Jamie Shaw recently tweeted that 2023 point guard Aden Holloway has elected to transfer to the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., which is also the home of Central New York native and 2022 four-star point guard Starling. That will make for some kind of stellar backcourt.

The 6-foot-1 Holloway is currently a sophomore at the Covenant Day School in Matthews, N.C. Syracuse basketball was the first to offer him a scholarship, back in the summer of 2019.

His other offers to date, and Holloway’s recruiting process has a way to go, are from teams such as Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Wake Forest and Winthrop.

— Jamie Shaw (@JamieShaw5) June 11, 2021

The 247Sports recruiting service rates Holloway as a four-star player, No. 50 overall and No. 10 at point guard in the 2023 cycle. I’ve read a handful of comments from analysts of late that suggest Holloway is poised for a rankings jump down the road.

What’s more, Holloway suiting up for the La Lumiere School will provide him with greater exposure, and that should lead to many more offers coming his way.

Syracuse basketball will have two elite prospects playing for a big-time prep squad in Indiana.

Broadway in Syracuse shows to rehearse at downtown theaters, creating boost for city (PS; $; Cazentre)

Live theater is coming back to downtown Syracuse starting this fall, and along with it will come an extra jolt of economic impact.

Four national touring companies — “Cats,” “Tootsie,” “Charlie & The Chocolate Factory,” and the Blue Man Group — will spend extra weeks in rehearsals at either of two downtown venues, the Landmark Theatre and and the Redhouse Arts Center.

Those rehearsals, which are typically not open to the public, will bring dozens of cast, crew, and support staff to the city for extended stays that could generate as much as $10 million or more in economic benefit, Landmark executive director Mike Intaglietta said today. That will come through hotel stays, dining out at restaurants and other local spending.

“The shows generate impact on their own, of course, and this just gives us so much more,” said Intaglietta, who estimated each show brings “north of 50″ people to town and the rehearsals add a few weeks or up to a month to their stay. “It will be a great boost for downtown and the city.”

Some interesting comments from Wildhack in respect to Red and Gerry. Nothing surprising but it's at least notable when speaking about them and then about Griff in respect to him having less experience.

I'm thinking he meant in terms of Syracuse coaching experience, specifically.

Griff is the more experienced coach overall than GMac, and that's not debatable.
But he's the 'new guy' on staff here.

Yeah - definitely notable to call that out vs saying we have 3 experienced asst coaches etc.
