Welcome to World Freedom Day!

World Freedom Day commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall as well as the end of communism's domination over Eastern and Central European countries. President George W. Bush issued the first proclamation for World Freedom Day on November 9, 2001, the twelfth anniversary of the opening of the Berlin Wall. In his remarks, Bush stated that the wall had separated those living under a dictatorship from those who were free and that its fall was "the turning point of the Cold War and a significant landmark in freedom's victory over tyranny." Bush said that World Freedom Day exists to "honor the spirit and perseverance of those who strived for freedom in East Germany and other repressive regimes," that it celebrates the new freedom that emerged after the wall's fall, and that it recognizes the billions of people still living under authoritarian regimes and repressive governments. In this spirit, he encouraged Americans to support those "who seek to lead their people out of oppression." He ended his proclamation by declaring, "I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities and to reaffirm their devotion to the aspirations of all people for freedom and democracy." The day was subsequently proclaimed by President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump.

Syracuse basketball vs. Lafayette: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse will host Lafayette in the season-opener for both teams on Tuesday, and the highlight of the night could be the return of basketball fans to the Carrier Dome for the first time since the end of the 2019-20 season.

The coronavirus pandemic forced Syracuse to play its entire 2020-21 season in an empty Dome. Only a few road games were played in front of fans. The Orange’s run to the Sweet 16 took place in front of limited capacity crowds in Indianapolis.

Now, fans are back, along with some players who were crucial to Syracuse’s NCAA success. Buddy Boeheim is back for his senior year after posting some monster games in the ACC and NCAA tournaments. Joe Girard returns for his junior year.

Syracuse must replace the departures of two starters and three reserves. Quincy Guerrier and Alan Griffin, SU’s starting forwards a year ago, left for Oregon and the pros, respectively. Kadary Richmond transferred to Seton Hall, Woody Newton to Oklahoma State and Robert Braswell to Charlotte.

As a result, SU coach Jim Boeheim dipped into the transfer portal to bring in Cole Swider, a 6-9 forward from Villanova; Symir Torrence, a 6-3 guard from Marquette; and Jimmy Boeheim, who dons the Syracuse uniform after spending three years at Cornell before having to sit out last season.

Lafayette has four starters back from a team that went 9-6 a year ago as the Patriot League played a drastically reduced schedule.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be televised on the Regional Sports Network, which includes the YES Network in the Syracuse area.

Here are five key things to know about the matchup:

Long time comin’

In recent years, Jim Boeheim has come out of the tunnel from the locker room to the Carrier Dome court to a Bruce Springsteen song. On Tuesday, Boeheim should make it “Long Time Comin’' off Springsteen’s 2005 “Devils & Dust” album.

That’s because it’s been a long time comin’ since Boeheim last coached against Lafayette’s Fran O’Hanlon.

Our 2021-22 comprehensive Syracuse basketball preview - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Staff)

The last time we saw Syracuse basketball play, the Orange was eliminated by Houston in the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Plenty has changed since then as the roster has undergone a major offseason facelift.

We break it all down in our annual comprehensive Syracuse basketball preview.

It all starts with our review of the 2020-21 season, where Syracuse finished 16-9 overall and 9-7 in ACC play. Though the Orange struggled early on in the year as several players missed time because of COVID, SU finished strong, winning three of their last four games.

Syracuse dealt with departure of six different players either to other schools or to the pros with the arrival of a top-rated freshman and three upperclassmen transfers. We break down the projected starting lineup as well as all of the key reserves.

Jim Boeheim believes this roster is ready to be tested early with seven straight high-major games before the turn of the calendar year, and TJO associate editor Jim Stechschulte analyzes the entire schedule. Editor in chief Brad Bierman goes a step further, giving his game-by-game predictions.

What will the Orange’s bottom line be at season’s end? Jim believes that SU will be on the bubble (again), but will be on the inside of it (again). We’ve asked the same questions of other experts in the media, and former players on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast:

  • ESPN and SNY’s Tim Welsh called Syracuse a second weekend team last year, and he thinks the Orange is going to get to ‘at least’ the Sweet 16 this season
  • The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil says that if the Orange’s 2-3 defense can make improvements, they can be a surprise in a wide open ACC
  • Adam Zagoria from The NY Times and ZagsBlog.com thinks that the Orange is a mid-range ACC team, but that should be enough for an NCAA Tournament berth
  • Syracuse.com | The Post Standard’s Mike Waters tells us that while the Orange isn’t nationally ranked to start the season, the coaching staff believes the Orange is poised for a big year
  • Former Syracuse center Baye Moussa Keita is also confident that SU will find a way to make the NCAA Tournament
That should be plenty to read and listen to as we get closer to tonight’s 7 p.m. tipoff against Lafayette.

Preview and predictions of the new faces on Syracuse men's basketball (DO; podcast; Staff)

Syracuse men’s basketball enters this season with a new round of faces. After its Sweet 16 run, head coach Jim Boeheim saw the departures of players such as Kadary Richmond, Alan Griffin and Marek Doležaj. Then the new wave came in.

In this episode of the Daily Orange Sportscast, our beat writers discuss what the new players will bring this year. Jimmy Boeheim is using his fifth year to reunite with his brother and father. Benny Williams’ time at IMG Academy unlocked the potential on the court he needed to get to Syracuse. Cole Swider transferred from Villanova, a move likely to help his shooting skills.

Three Bold Predictions For The 2021-22 Syracuse Basketball Season – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

It’s almost that time! You can smell basketball in the air as Syracuse gets ready to tip-off its 2021-22 season. However, before the action gets going, the H0T Takes need to be given.

Now, I want to make this clear – these predictions are called bold predictions for a reason. They are not very realistic, but they are fun to hypothesize. With that being said, here are three bold predictions for the upcoming season:

BUDDY BOEHEIM WINS ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This prediction is probably the most realistic of the three. Buddy Boeheim is easily Syracuse’s number 1 option on offense. The senior is coming off a season where he averaged 18 points on 38% shooting from three. He especially turned it on late, putting up 25 points per game in the NCAA Tournament. However, because of that coming out party, Boeheim is going to garner much more defensive attention this season. His chances of being ACC Player of the Year rely heavily on his ability to handle that extra pressure. If he can continue to shine, Boeheim can absolutely bring home the honor.

The other options for Player of the Year are Duke’s Paolo Banchero, the highly touted freshman, Virginia Tech’s Keve Aluma and North Carolina’s Armando Bacot. It’s not crazy to say that Boeheim has the same probability of winning as those guys.

SYRACUSE MAKES THE FINAL FOUR

Syracuse making a Cinderella run and somehow finding itself in the Final Four??? Sounds pretty familiar. Being realistic, the Orange aren’t a top-four team in the country. They have plenty of question marks with all of the new faces. Plus, SU’s lack of depth is a big worry. However, if we want to be bold, it’s not completely ridiculous to say Syracuse could go on a run in the tournament. As long as the Orange make it, they could rattle off some wins. With Joe Girard feeding off the fans, Buddy lighting it up offensively, and Cole Swider and Benny Williams surprising people, they could catch fire and make it to the Final Four.

FRANK ANSELEM IS THE STARTING CENTER BY ACC PLAY

Jim Boeheim loves to put people in the dog house. Last season it was Kadary Richmond. The year before that it was Jalen Carey. Could Jesse Edwards be the culprit this season? If so, Frank Anselem would fill in as the starting center. Bourama Sidibe would technically be the next guy up, but he is so injury-prone who knows if he ever plays this year. So, maybe it is the dog house that puts Anselem in the starting lineup.

Syracuse Basketball: Kentucky offer likely coming soon for 5-star target (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 five-star target Justin Edwards, one of the hottest prospects across the country in his class, could find himself with a scholarship offer from recruiting juggernaut Kentucky in the near future.

In recent weeks, there have been rumblings among some national analysts and recruiting insiders that those Wildcats are showing serious interest in the 6-foot-7 wing, and that an offer could arrive for the top-10 Edwards once he took a trip to Kentucky.

Well, word has come out that Edwards plans to take an official visit to Kentucky on November 18, according to recruiting services and media reports, including one from Joe Tipton of On3 Recruits.

2023 five-star Justin Edwards will take an official visit to Kentucky on Nov. 18, he tells @On3Recruits.
— Joe Tipton (@TiptonEdits) November 2, 2021

As we previously documented, at least one recruiting insider on has already logged a prediction in the direction of the Wildcats for Edwards.

If he is offered by Kentucky on his official visit or shortly thereafter, let’s see if other analyst projections start flowing in for the Wildcats as it pertains to Edwards’ recruitment.

Lafayette (0-0) vs. Syracuse (0-0) Carrier Dome, Syracuse, New York; Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST BOTTOM LINE: Syracuse gets its 2021-22 season rolling by hosting the Lafayette Leopards. Lafayette went 9-6 last year, while Syracuse ended up 18-10. TOP ARTICLES DID YOU KNOW: Syracuse went 8-2 in non-conference play, averaging 75.8 points and giving up 67.7 per game in the process.

Syracuse Basketball: Top 3 NCAA Tournament games in Boeheim era (itlh; Clark)

Leading up to the early part of the 2021-22 Syracuse basketball campaign, it’s a good time for a 10-part series highlighting the best of the Boeheim era (1976-present).

I'll give my takes, ranking the “Top 3” in many categories, from best free throw shooters to most exciting on a fast break. From top games in the Dome, to top games in the NCAA tourney and everything else in between.

I was 7-years-old in 1976 when Jim Boeheim, who is second all-time in career victories within Division I men’s basketball, became the head coach of the Orange. If I haven’t watched (or listened on the radio) intently to every single Syracuse basketball game since then, then it’s close to 98%.

Statistical facts in each Top 3 are fueled by the awesome OrangeHoops.org web site.

Part 1: Top 3 Triple Doubles.
Part 2: Top 3 Free Throw Shooters.
Part 3: Top 3 Most Exciting on Fast Break.
Part 4: Top 3 Games at the Carrier Dome.
Part 5: Top 3 Shot Blockers.
Part 6: Top 3 Scorers.
Part 7: Top 3 Dunkers.

Today, it’s Part 8: My Top 3 NCAA tournament games in the Boeheim era.

Jim Boeheim, in his 44 years as coach, has taken Syracuse basketball to the NCAA Tournament 35 times. He’s advanced to the Sweet 16 in 20 of those tournaments and the Elite Eight 7 times. Boeheim has been head coach of the Orange for 5 Final Fours, been to 3 national championship games, and of course, won the National Championship once.

He’s fourth all-time in NCAA tournament wins, behind only Coach K (Duke), Roy Williams (Kansas and North Carolina) and Dean Smith (North Carolina).

That’s a long way of saying Syracuse basketball fans have enjoyed an awesome ride through the magic of March Madness for decades, so choosing the top 3 NCAA Tournament games in Boeheim’s career isn’t easy, but here it goes:

Johnny Angel's, 22 Jordan St., Skaneateles. Skaneateles business executive and resident Adam Weitsman is buying the hamburger place and converting it into a breakfast-focused diner called Clover's Cafe.Michael Greenlar

Adam Weitsman buys well-known Skaneateles restaurant for new version of Hilltop diner (PS; $; Cazentre)

Last week, Skaneateles resident and business executive Adam Weitsman vowed to hire all the staff from the soon-to-close Hilltop Restaurant just outside the village and open a new place for them to work.

A week later, he’s made good on the promise.

Weitsman is buying Johnny Angel’s, a well-known hamburger joint at 22 Jordan St. in the village. For now, he’s turning it into a 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. breakfast-focused diner that will be open seven days a week.

It will be called Clover’s Cafe, after Weitsman’s 12-year-old daughter. It will incorporate much of the Hilltop menu and some of the Johnny’ Angel’s favorites.

Weitsman is offering jobs to 16 or 17 staffers from the Hilltop, and offering two managers from that restaurant “equity shares” in the business. He is also planning to offer jobs to all of the Johnny Angel’s staff.

Clover’s Cafe will open after a brief shutdown of Johnny Angel’s for a transition.

He said he plans to keep the prices low and donate profits from the new cafe to charity.

“The prices will be very equal to the Hilltop,” Weitsman said. “It will be an affordable place for everyone.”

Weitsman said Johnny Angel’s owner Bill Lynn approached him about a deal after reading of the closing of the Hilltop and its Cedar House Bowling Lanes last week. Lynn has moved to Florida and was looking to sell the hamburger joint, Weitsman said. (Lynn will keep the nearby Scoops ice cream shop for now).

Weitsman is the owner of Upstate Shredding, the largest scrap metal business on the East Coast, and also owns The Krebs and The Elephant and the Dove restaurants in Skaneateles. He lives on Skaneateles Lake.

The Hilltop and Cedar House, just west of the village line on Route 20, have been purchased by The Woodbine Group of Syracuse, a developer of boutique hotels and other properties.
