Welcome to The Start of Ramadan!
Officials saw the crescent moon Sunday night in Saudi Arabia, home to the holiest sites in Islam, marking the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan for many of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims.
The sacred month, which sees those observing abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset, marks a period of religious reflection, family get-togethers and giving across the Muslim world. Seeing the moon Sunday night means Monday is the first day of the fast.
Saudi state television reported that authorities there saw the crescent moon. Soon after, multiple Gulf Arab nations, as well as Egypt, Sudan, Syria and Yemen followed the announcement to confirm they as well would start fasting on Monday. North American Muslims also will begin their fast Monday.

Brown is ‘probably the most valuable, most important’ player on SU basketball roster (PS; Ditota)
When Maliq Brown was an up-and-coming prep player, the two signature college basketball programs in his state, Virginia and Virginia Tech, initially recruited him.
But at some point during the process, they told his high school coach, Cade Lemke, that there were other prospects on their recruiting boards that seemed like better fits. Those two programs, Lemke said, ended up “going in a different direction.”
Lemke heard that frequently. Coaches who watched Brown at Blue Ridge School or on the summer circuit liked what they saw. But with Brown, the surface stats failed to pop from the page.
He wasn’t a dramatic dunker. He didn’t score a stupendous amount of points. He didn’t gobble every rebound.
“Those sexy things end up putting a player on your radar,” Lemke said, “and then someone like Maliq falls through the cracks.”
Brown, his coaches say, is so much more than a scan of his stats.
Syracuse’s 6-foot-8 sophomore leads the Orange in rebounds (7.0), steals (69) and shooting percentage (.693). In ACC-only games, no conference players have a better 2-point shooting percentage (.708) or effective field goal percentage (.689) according to kenpom.com. Brown has more steals than any other player in the conference.
But it’s his basketball acumen, his willingness to sacrifice self for team and the steadiness he delivers every game has endeared him to coaches and to Orange fans.
SU assistant Brenden Straughn, Brown’s position coach, describes Brown as “probably the most valuable, the most important piece of what we’re doing on both ends of the floor.”
Brown said he will return to Syracuse next season. Depending on how the Orange roster shakes out in the offseason, he could potentially play more power forward.
But now, as an undersized center, he is battling each night against opposing big men who sometimes dwarf him in height and weight. Lately, he has been tasked with making plays from the high or mid-post to keep Syracuse’s offense churning.

ACC men’s basketball tournament bracket: Syracuse gets No. 7 seed, but who will Orange play? (PS; Waters)
The Syracuse Orange basketball team will be the No. 7 seed in the ACC tournament and will play next in a second-round game on Wednesday at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.
Syracuse finished the regular season with a 20-11 overall and an 11-9 mark in the conference. The Orange was tied with Clemson and Wake Forest for 5th-place in the ACC’s final standings, but fell to the No. 7 in the tournament through a series of tie-breakers. The Orange lost twice to Clemson and once to Wake Forest in the regular season.
Syracuse will play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Orange will face the winner of Tuesday’s first round game between No. 10 seed NC State and No. 15 seed Louisville. Syracuse swept the season series with both of those teams.
Wednesday’s game will be televised on ESPN2.
The Orange will have a week between games. Syracuse lost to Clemson last Tuesday in its final regular season game. The Orange had a bye on Saturday while the ACC’s other 14 teams played their final games.
North Carolina earned the No. 1 seed with its win at Duke on Saturday. The win gave the Tar Heels a sweep of their arch-rivals and their first outright regular season conference title since 2017.
Duke will be the No. 2 seed. The No. 3 and 4 seeds are Virginia and Pittsburgh. The top four seeds receive double-byes into Thursday’s quarterfinal round.
If Syracuse wins on Wednesday, it would face No. 2 seed Duke at 7 p.m. Thursday. In the teams’ only meeting of the season, Duke beat Syracuse 86-66 in Durham, N.C., on Jan. 2.

While the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team (20-11, 11-9) enjoyed the weekend off, it waited for the rest of the ACC to wrap up the regular season with seeding for the ACC Tournament still up in the air. With those games now in the books, will officially be the No. 7 seed in this year’s conference tournament in Washington, D.C., the first time the program has been a top-eight seed since the 2020-21 season.
The Orange Syracuse will play its first ACC Tournament game under head coach Adrian Autry on Wednesday night versus the winner of the No. 10 NC State Wolfpack (17-14, 9-11) and the No. 15 Louisville Cardinals (8-23, 3-17).

Syracuse is entering this year’s ACC Tournament at an interesting point in the season. The program secured its most overall wins in five years and its second-most conference wins since joining the ACC in 2013-14. At the same time, it’s also safe to say the Orange’s recent loss to Clemson in their regular season finale likely put the nail in the coffin on an NCAA Tournament berth... barring a miraculous run in the ACC Tournament.

Syracuse basketball was one of 10 teams reportedly contacted to potentially participate in a historic in-season NIL related college basketball tournament that would start during the 2024-25 campaign. This according to a report Front Office Sports.
Here are the specifics of the tournament per the report:
- Up to $2 million in name, image and likeness deals to participating teams. $1 million distributed to all teams and another $1 million to the winning team.
- The tournament would be named "Players Era" and be played in Las Vegas.
- Eight teams will participate this fall and 16 the following year.
- EverWonder Studio and AND1 CEO of basketball Seth Berger will operate the event.
- EverWonder has not yet secured distribution but is in talks with both linear and streaming-based broadcasters
- Funds will be given to collectives, boosters, or other NIL entities. The coaches and teams will be able to distribute that money however they see fit, as long as the money goes to current players .

Seeds, Bracket Announced for 2024 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the seedings and bracket for the 2024 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, which will be played Tuesday through Saturday, March 12-16, at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The 71st edition of the tournament will be played for the third time in the nation’s capital.
After capturing its first outright ACC regular-season championship since the 2016-17 season, North Carolina (25-6, 17-3 ACC) earned the tournament’s No. 1 seed as well as a double bye into the Thursday quarterfinals. Duke (24-7, 15-5) claimed the No. 2 seed in the tournament, while Virginia (22-9, 13-7) notched the No. 3 seed.
Winners of nine of its last 11 games, Pitt (21-10, 12-8) picked up the No. 4 seed, earning its first-ever double bye in the ACC Tournament.
The tournament opens Tuesday with three games. No. 12 seed Notre Dame (12-19, 7-13) faces No. 13 Georgia Tech (12-19, 7-13) in the opener at 2 p.m. No. 10 NC State (17-14, 9-11) plays No. 15 Louisville (8-23, 3-17) at 4:30 p.m., while No. 11 Boston College (17-14, 8-12) takes on No. 14 Miami (15-16, 6-14) in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
No. 8 seed Virginia Tech (18-13, 10-10) plays No. 9 Florida State (16-14, 10-10) at noon Wednesday to start the second round. No. 5 seed Wake Forest (19-12, 11-9) battles the winner of the Notre Dame-Georgia Tech contest at 2:30 p.m. In the second session, No. 7 Syracuse (20-11, 11-9) plays the winner of the NC State-Louisville game at 7 p.m., while No. 6 Clemson (21-10, 11-9) takes on the Boston College-Miami winner at 9:30 p.m.
The Wednesday winners then will move on to play the tournament’s top four seeds on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
All 14 tournament games will be nationally televised on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ACC Network. In addition, all games will be available for streaming via ACCNX.

Let the good times enroll: Syracuse University is one of the top five party schools in America (PS; Hernandez)
Party on, Upstate New York.
Seven colleges from all over the state are among the top 100 party schools in the U.S., according to Niche, a Pittsburgh-based website that analyzes neighborhoods, school districts and colleges. They looked at schools across the nation to find out where college kids like to “party.”
Syracuse University, a perennial top ranking party school, sits at number five on the list this year. The private institution in Central New York has been consistently in the top 10 party schools, ranked by different publications for over a decade.
A sophomore student review on Niche reads, “If you really enjoy going out to parties and other events, this may be the school for you. There is an impressive music scene with a number of appealing house shows, frats, sports houses, etc.”
The school cracked down in 2014 on some of the partying after Syracuse was named the No. 1 party school that year. It may have worked as it fell in Niche’s national ranking and also ranked #23 on The Princeton Review’s “Reefer Madness” list. This list is based on student ratings concerning how widely used marijuana is at their schools. Syracuse fell under Upstate New York’s top contender, Skidmore College (#2) in Saratoga Springs.
The only other school to crack the top 50 on Niche’s list was University of Albany.

Snow winds down today in Central NY, then springlike weather returns (PS; Coin)
Lake effect snow winds down this morning over Central and Northern New York, and another round of springlike weather arrives for the rest of the work week.
The combination of snow and high winds were enough to cause delays or closures in a number of local school districts today. Cortland County was hardest-hit, with several districts closing there.
The National Weather Service says a winter storm advisory remains in place until 11 a.m., and a wind advisory lasts until 8 p.m.
Once the snow and winds subside later today, it will feel like spring again the rest of the week. While we won’t be setting any high temperature records like the past two weeks, highs over the next few days will reach the upper 50s and low 60s, well above the normal high of about 40 in mid-March.

Jimmy Fallon makes more appearances in Upstate NY, stops at college party (report) (PS; Owens)
Jimmy Fallon has been busy making the rounds in Upstate New York the last few days.
Fallon, former Saturday Night Live cast member and current host of The Tonight Show, made a surprise appearance at Nate Bargatze’s comedy show Friday night at the Oncenter War Memorial in Syracuse, delivering a 15-minute opening set.
Then, on Saturday night, Fallon did it again, performing at Bargatze’s show at MVP Arena in Albany, according to a report from WNYT-TV.
Fallon spottings in Upstate New York weren’t limited to Bargatze’s concerts, though.
On Friday night, Fallon stopped off at Shaughnessy’s Irish Pub in Syracuse with Bargatze where he had some nachos and wings and posed for some photos, according to the pub’s Facebook feed.
Then, on Saturday afternoon, Fallon apparently was spotted joining some partygoers in the Albany area, the Albany Times-Union reported. Numerous social media users posted videos show Fallon at what appeared to be a college party, according to a Barstool Sports blog.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon made a surprise appearance at a Syracuse comedy show Friday night, doing a 15-minute set opening for Nate Bargatze in front of a sellout crowd at the Oncenter War Memorial.
The show was part of the Be Funny Tour, featuring Bargatze, a standup comic from Tennessee. Fallon, host of “The Tonight Show” and a former cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” was teased as a “special guest” early in the show. Among the three other openers was Steven Rogers, who is from Liverpool, N.Y.
