Welcome to Visit the Zoo Day!

Visit the Zoo Day takes place during the holidays, between Christmas and New Year's Day, at a time when children often have off from school. Family members who live out of town are often visiting as well. Given these circumstances, Visit the Zoo Day provides a great way for families to bond during the holidays.

A Zoo—short for a zoological park—is a place that contains animals and exists to entertain, educate, engage in scientific research, and focus on conservation. Early zoos, known as menageries, were private collections of animals held by the wealthy. They existed as early as 2,500 BCE, being found in Egypt and Mesopotamia. They were found soon afterward in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. Aztec Emperor Montezuma II had one of the first collections of animals in the Western Hemisphere.

Syracuse basketball vs. Brown: What to know (PS; $; Ditota)

It’s been 16 days since the Syracuse men’s basketball team played a basketball game. SU’s opponent Monday night in the Carrier Dome has not played a game in 17 days.

Expect a little rust, beginning at 6 p.m. when the Orange meets Brown. The game was scheduled after Syracuse underwent a Covid pause that temporarily excised Lehigh and Cornell from its schedule. The Brown game is a replacement for Lehigh; Syracuse announced Sunday it had rescheduled Cornell for Wednesday after Georgia Tech could not play the game because of its own Covid issues.

Got all that?

Syracuse is 5-5 and is coming off a 79-75 loss at Georgetown on Dec. 11, a game that seems like a distant memory. Brown is 8-5 and is coming off a 70-65 home loss to Vermont. The game in Syracuse represents Brown’s first of six straight road games; SU is scheduled to play three straight in the Dome.

Here are a few things to look for Monday:

Tale of two halves

Syracuse has struggled in the second halves of games it has lost and in a couple of games it has won, too.

The Orange held halftime leads in its last two games -- Villanova and Georgetown -- and lost both games. Teams that have beaten SU this season are shooting 50.9% overall in the second half and 41.3% from the 3-point line. The Orange, conversely, are not making second-half shots in those games.
...

Beat writers unanimously pick Syracuse to top Brown after 2-week COVID-19 pause (DO; Staff)

After a second half comeback from Georgetown, Syracuse dropped a second straight game and fell back to .500 for the third time this season. It appeared that the Orange would have two winnable games against Lehigh and then Cornell, but then at least four starters tested positive for COVID-19. Head coach Jim Boeheim said all players are vaccinated and received their booster, which helped reduce the effects of the virus, but the COVID-19 cases meant that the Orange had to go on a pause just like last year.

Out of the break, Syracuse (5-5, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) added Brown (8-5, 0-0 Ivy League) to its schedule. The Bears come to the Dome off of a COVID-19 pause of their own. This game will be Syracuse’s second-to-last nonconference game of the year, so it could be a final tuneup before the start of ACC play.

Here’s what our beat writers predict will happen against Brown on Monday at 6 p.m.:

Andrew Crane (4-6)
Shaking off the rust
Syracuse 65, Brown 55

This game features a team that hasn’t played in 16 days (Syracuse) and a team that hasn’t played in 17 days (Brown), and might turn into a game that’s won by whichever group has less rust than the other. It’s one of those nonconference games that the Orange shouldn’t have any problem winning, but last year, they won just one of three games after a postponement — with the one victory requiring a 43-point surge in the second half to erase what had escalated to a 20-point Notre Dame lead. In the two losses, they shot 36.7% and 30% from the field against Pittsburgh and Clemson, respectively.

But the Bears are an opponent that SU could struggle against, fail to find any shooting rhythm at first and still pull out a much-needed win. Look for a balanced offense to pace the Orange on Monday, with Jesse Edwards taking on a lead role given that Brown’s tallest player on its roster stands at just 6-foot-9.

Roshan Fernandez (5-5)
Back to work
Syracuse 70, Brown 57

Syracuse added Brown to its schedule to make up for what would’ve — or at least should’ve — been two guaranteed wins over Lehigh and Cornell. Those two games got canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak among Syracuse’s team, but unlike last season, players’ symptoms were mild and their return to practice seemed prompt (the Orange returned to practice on Dec. 23). Boeheim said last season that it took time for players like Joe Girard III and Buddy Boeheim to fully recover from COVID-19 and get back to 100%, but this year, he emphasized that having a fully vaccinated team helped ease his players’ symptoms. Look for SU to reestablish an offensive rhythm here when it returns to the office and gets back to work against Brown.

Gaurav Shetty (5-5)
Back to basics
Syracuse 80, Brown 68

Syracuse has not played at home since the double-overtime thriller against Indiana and hasn’t played a game since losing to Georgetown in Washington. The Orange would’ve had two presumably easy wins over Lehigh and Cornell, but due to positive COVID-19 tests on the Syracuse team, SU added a Dec. 27 game against Brown and rescheduled its game against Cornell for Dec. 29 due to Georgia Tech entering COVID-19 protocols. Syracuse has dropped games like this that they should win, like Colgate and Georgetown, so this game isn’t as much of a given. Even though Syracuse’s defense has been poor all year, I don’t see it being bad enough to give the Bears a chance of winning. The game against Brown should prove to be a simple tuneup out of a COVID-19 pause before ACC games start to pick up hard and fast.

Opponent Preview: What to know about Brown, SU’s 1st game since COVID-19 pause (DO; Crane)

Syracuse’s return from a COVID-19 pause to play its first game in 16 days coincides with Brown’s first game in 17 days, and the two teams will meet in the Carrier Dome on Monday night. The Orange last faced Georgetown on Dec. 11, but then about 14 of their players tested positive in the days that followed — leading to postponements against Lehigh and Cornell.

Brown, which was picked to finish fifth in the preseason Ivy League poll, lost a game from its schedule when COVID-19 issues in Rhode Island’s program forced a cancellation. The Bears (8-5) will play SU (5-5, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) on Monday and then Maryland three days later before entering conference play for the rest of the season. As of now, this is the Orange’s second-to-last nonconference game of the season, with a contest against Cornell slated for Dec. 29 unless the postponed game against Lehigh is rescheduled.

Here’s what you need to know about the Bears ahead of their second-ever trip to the Carrier Dome.

All-time series

Syracuse leads, 4-3.

Last time they played

Behind 21 points from Pearl Washington, 17 from Rafael Addison and 15 from Rodney Walker off the bench, Syracuse cruised past Brown, 101-52, in the first round of the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Washington, who converted 9-of-11 shots from the field, also dished out seven assists, while 6-foot-10 center Rony Seikaly contributed five blocks and seven rebounds. Twelve different Bears players scored, but only Jim Turner (13 points) managed double-digits for a team that had won its first Ivy League title. The Orange managed at least 50 points in each half and extended a season that had opened with 13 consecutive wins.

Syracuse, a No. 2 seed in that year’s tournament, lost to seventh-seeded Navy by 12 points in the next round, allowing 65 points in the second half.
KenPom odds
Syracuse has an 83% chance to win, with a projected score of 77-67.

The Bears report

Brown didn’t play last year after the Ivy League canceled its season due to COVID-19, but the Bears returned Tamenang Choh, who averaged 13.2 points per game the previous year, as their second leading scorer. He’s one of three players to average double-digit points this season, though his 10.0 points per game trails both Kino Lilly Jr. (12.2) and Paxson Wojcik (10.8). Those players key an offensive group that’s struggled throughout the season, though, ranking 233rd nationally in terms of adjusted offensive efficiency even as Brown has topped 72 points in four of its last five games.
In its second game of the season, Brown narrowly lost a 94-87 game against North Carolina after scoring 50 points in the opening half and leading by three at the break. It took a 3-pointer from RJ Davis with 43 seconds left to seal UNC’s victory, spoiling a night where Brown shot 50.7% from the field. The Bears haven’t defeated a team ranked higher than 146, per KenPom, though their defensive turnover percentage, defensive rebounding percentage and defensive block percentage all rank inside the top 100 nationally. Dan Friday holds the highest percentage of shots taken on the team, but he’s only turned that into a 9.8 points per game average.

ACC basketball power rankings: Amid postponements, 2 conference games provide clarity (PS; $; Waters)

The coronavirus turned what was to be a light week of action in the ACC into an even lighter schedule.

Five ACC teams -- Syracuse, Florida State, Boston College, Louisville and Wake Forest -- sat idle last week as several games were canceled or postponed due to Covid concerns.

However, the ACC power rankings still got a little clarity thanks to a pair of ACC games last week. And there will be a full slate of games this coming week.

1. Duke

Record:
11-1 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 1st
Last week’s results: Win 76-65 over Virginia Tech
This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Clemson; Saturday at Notre Dame

Why No. 1? In its ACC opener, Duke took care of Virginia Tech and tightened its grip on the No.1 spot. The Blue Devils hit the road twice next week.

2. Wake Forest

Record:
11-1 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 2nd
Last week’s results: No games
This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Louisville; Saturday at Miami

Why No. 2? Wake Forest had its game against Boston College postponed, so the Deacons remain in this unexpected position for at least another week.

3. North Carolina

Syracuse Basketball: Next foe has played some tough teams really close (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is slated to suit up in its first game in more than two weeks on Monday night, and the Orange will face an Ivy League foe that is pretty darn solid.

The ‘Cuse (5-5, 1-0) had its two most recent non-conference contests against Lehigh and Cornell postponed due to Covid protocols, and SU athletics-department officials have said that they will see if they can make up these encounters at some point. To that end, the Orange on Sunday announced a home date with Cornell scheduled for December 29.

Meanwhile, Syracuse basketball will now host Ivy League member Brown (8-5) at 6 pm on December 27, with the ACC Network providing television coverage.

Given that numerous Orange players had recently tested positive for Covid, according to media reports, and the team’s practice schedule hasn’t been as robust of late due to Covid protocols and the holidays, I could foresee the ‘Cuse squad being a tad rusty versus Brown, which is no cupcake, by the way.

Let’s take a closer look at the next Syracuse basketball opponent.

Brown doesn’t boast many super high-quality wins at this juncture, but the Bears have played some solid teams quite close, and I hope Syracuse basketball players aren’t taking Brown lightly.

House of the Week: Owner is looking for the right ‘steward’ to carry on the legacy of Fayetteville’s ‘Fairfield Estate’ (PS; $; Croyle)

After Paul Dodd moved to Syracuse for business reasons in 2002, he would lament that he “was alone in the city.”

But his solitude was soon to change.

He met his future wife, Daynia, just 10 days after she herself moved to town. They married nine months later and have two children together.

Then, in 2009, they would purchase one of Onondaga County’s most recognizable homes, the unique Victorian house at 7078 East Genesee Street in Fayetteville, known as “Fairfield Estate.”

They would soon be having hundreds of guests visiting, allowing them to share their “showcase home” with the community.

Owner says living at this historic Fayetteville home has been a "dream"

“I loved it instantly,” he remembers. “It was pristine and too good to be true. It was a dream”

He had wanted to live in an older home, while Daynia preferred something a little more modern.

This property offered the perfect compromise.

Though the original portion of the more than 9,000-square-foot house dates to the Civil War era, it has received several upgrades and additions during its history.

It was built between 1864 and 1875 by Nathaniel Gillett, a local business investor and gentleman farmer, who hoped to breed horses, grow hops, and raise vineyards there.

In 1900, it was purchased by a prominent Syracuse attorney, Andrew S. White, whose uncle was first president of Cornell University.
