Welcome to Winnie the Pooh Day!

Winnie the Pooh Day is celebrated on the birthday of A.A. Milne, the English author who created the popular children's character, Winnie the Pooh. The name "Winnie-the-Pooh" first appeared in a story called "The Wrong Sort of Bees," on Christmas Eve in 1925, in The Evening News. The following year, Milne published a volume of stories about Pooh, simply titled Winnie-the-Pooh. He followed this in 1928 with The House at Pooh Corner.

A black bear named Winnie—short for Winnipeg, as she had come from Canada—was an inspiration for the character. Winnie had resided at the London Zoo, and Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne, liked to visit her; he even had the opportunity to feed her honey. Christopher named his own teddy bear Winnie the Pooh, after the real-life Winnie, as well as after a swan named Pooh, that the Milne's had seen while on vacation. Christopher's bear actually had originally been named Edward, and had been purchased at Harrods in London.

Syracuse basketball vs. Clemson: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse and Clemson, two teams that have been struggling, will try to get back on the winning track when they meet on Tuesday at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (8-9 overall, 2-4 ACC) has lost four of its last five games. The four losses have been by a total of just 14 points, but they’re losses just the same. The Orange finds itself below .500 this late into a season for the first time in Jim Boeheim’s 46-year coaching tenure.

Clemson, meanwhile, has lost two in a row and three of its last four games. The Tigers (10-7, 2-4) suffered a 70-68 loss to Boston College on Saturday. The home loss came after Clemson had raced to an early 34-11 lead.

This is the final game in a three-game homestand for Syracuse. The Orange will play three of its next four games away from home. Tuesday’s game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m.

Here are five key things to know about Tuesday’s matchup:

Beat writers split on whether Syracuse can hand Clemson its 3rd straight loss (DO; Staff)

Syracuse closes out a stretch of three consecutive home games hosting Clemson on Tuesday, aiming to prevent a fifth loss in its last six games and seventh in the last 10. Beat writers are split on whether Syracuse can hand Clemson its 3rd straight loss. The Orange’s most recent defeat came against Florida State on Jan. 15 when they blew a 28-18 first-half lead, fell behind by seven points midway through the second frame and ultimately lost following a dunk and two free throws by FSU in the final seconds.

The Tigers, who’ve lost two consecutive games and three of their last four, are led by P.J. Hall’s 14.5 points per game, and the 6-foot-10 sophomore also ranks as the team’s third-best rebounder with an average of 5.8 per game.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s beat writers think will happen when Syracuse (8-9, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) faces the Tigers (10-7, 2-4) at 9 p.m. in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday.

Andrew Crane (11-6)
(Briefly) back on track
Syracuse 80, Clemson 75

Even though the Tigers rank 15th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage, per KenPom, they’ve only shot 24.6% from beyond the arc in the last three games — two of which were losses, with the other game a five-point win over NC State. I think a strong start to the year offensively has helped mask some of Clemson’s recent struggles, and in those last three games, its adjusted offensive efficiency numbers were three of its four lowest totals of the season. The only one lower efficiency output came in the season opener, when Clemson scraped out an 11-point win against Presbyterian but only produced 64 points.

In most cases, I’d predict that playing Syracuse’s defense could serve as the exact solution that Clemson needs to get going offensively. And it definitely could, making this pick look ridiculous. But Clemson’s head coach Brad Brownell admitted on Monday’s ACC Coaches Zoom that his 3-point defense is “probably not as good as it needs to be,” and I think that’ll be enough of a window for the Orange to pick up a win they desperately need. Look for Cole Swider to continue his recent surge behind the arc, with his success opening up looks for Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard III, too.

Roshan Fernandez (10-7)
3-point defense … again
Clemson 74, Syracuse 71

Clemson ranks 15th in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (38.4%), per KenPom. Syracuse has been struggling recently against teams that didn’t specialize in 3-point shooting — such as Florida State and Wake Forest — so a matchup with Clemson might not be favorable for SU. I’m not convinced the Orange have a solution to their porous 3-point defense yet. Clemson also has a balanced offense that features four scorers averaging double-digits, an even more concerning look for an SU defense that’s slipped to 225th in the rankings, according to KenPom (I think Syracuse has fared slightly better against teams like Pitt that have one more dominant offensive player who the Orange can focus on shutting down).

Opponent preview: What to know about Clemson (DO; Crane)

Syracuse and Clemson meet for the first, and only, time this season on Tuesday night, with the Tigers traveling to the Carrier Dome for the Orange’s third consecutive home game. Both teams lost their last game — SU fell by five points to FSU, and the Tigers lost to Boston College by two — and sit 11th and 10th in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, respectively, as the 2021-22 season enters its final six weeks.

Here’s what to know about the Tigers (10-7, 2-4 ACC) before Tuesday’s matchup with Syracuse (8-9, 2-4).

All-time series

Clemson leads 7-5.

Last time they played

Behind 22 points from Alan Griffin, Syracuse picked up a 64-54 win over Clemson to close its regular season with back-to-back wins that solidified an NCAA Tournament position pending conference tournament results. The Orange led by three points at halftime despite shooting only 25% in the opening frame, and their defense limited Clemson to 33.9% shooting from the field.

In the second half, SU’s offense — and, specifically, Griffin — started clicking to the tune of 51.9% shooting, including a 150-second stretch after the break where Griffin made three consecutive 3s. Marek Dolezaj was held scoreless for just the second time all season, but he still contributed eight rebounds and a block while anchoring the center of the 2-3 zone. It was the first time the Orange emerged with a victory against Clemson since January 2019, and they closed the regular season with eight wins in 12 games.

“We woke up in the second half,” Griffin said. “We started a little shaky, and we started to get things rolling in the second.”

KenPom odds

Syracuse has a 56% chance to win, with a projected score of 78-76.

The Tigers report
Clemson’s defense, which ranked 19th nationally in adjusted efficiency last year, per KenPom, has dropped to 86th this season, but the Tigers still rank seven slots higher than SU in the conference’s ranking for points allowed per game. Aamir Simms graduated, Clyde Trapp transferred to Charlotte and that left players like PJ Hall, Nick Honor, Al-Amir Dawes and Hunter Tyson forced to step into expanded roles.

Hall leads the Tigers in scoring with 14.5 points per game, one of four players to average double-digits, and his percentage of shots taken — 30.5%, per KenPom — ranks 89th in the country.

Early in the season, Clemson surged to a 9-4 start behind consistent 3-point makes and a balanced offense. It converted nine or more 3-pointers in eight of those games, and its 3-point percentage (38.4) still ranks 15th in the country despite struggling in recent games. The Tigers endured a 13-day break between games against Virginia on Dec. 22 and Jan. 4, and since returning, have only hit 24-of-81 shots from 3 and managed 70 or more points just once.

How Syracuse beats Clemson

It’s been a weakness of the Orange’s throughout the entire season, but they’ll need to ensure that Clemson’s recent stretch of shooting struggles from beyond the arc extends at least one more game. Honor torched Syracuse with five 3s in their first meeting last year, but the sophomore hasn’t replicated that performance since and has only hit three 3-pointers in his last seven games. SU needs to ensure that those same shooting windows from February 2021 don’t open once again, while also taking away Hall’s ability to maneuver inside the paint.

Offensively, Cole Swider has started to find a bit of a rhythm over recent games, and SU will need him to continue his emergence as a viable option to not only make the open looks but also aggressively create his own. The Tigers held Buddy Boeheim to a combined 9-for-28 shooting in the two meetings last season, and the Orange managed to pull away with a win in the second meeting because of secondary scoring — an area where they’ve struggled this season, especially with inconsistency from Joe Girard III at times and recurring foul trouble from Jesse Edwards.

Stat to know: 2 fouls

Clemson averages more personal fouls committed per game and has committed more total fouls this season than Syracuse — 15.9 compared to 14.6 and 270 compared to 248, respectively — but the Tigers have only had a player foul out twice this season. SU, on the other hand, has had a player foul out 12 times, with nine coming from Edwards, two from Swider and one from Buddy. Only Prairie View (15) and Montana (13) have had players foul out more times than SU this season, while Mississippi Valley and Illinois State sit tied with the Orange at 12.

Clemson men's basketball heads to Syracuse (tigernet.com; Staff)

Clemson (10-7, 2-4 ACC, 57 KenPom ranking) looks to break a losing spell in a Tuesday evening tilt at Syracuse (8-9, 2-4, 82 KenPom).

Tipoff in the Carrier Dome is set for 9:05 p.m. ET. Dave O'Brien and Randolph Childress will call the broadcast for ACCN. Don Munson and Tim Bourret will broadcast the game on the Clemson Athletic Network.

After winning four in a row previously, the Tigers have lost three of the last four, including on Saturday at home versus Boston College after holding a 23-point lead.

Notes

• Clemson and Syracuse will match up for the 13th time in program history, where the Orange hold a 7-5 advantage.
• Both teams split the season series a year ago with both home teams winning games.
• Overall the Tigers have won three-out-of-four against the Orange in the series.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star point guard as crafty as they come, per analyst (itlh; Adler)

In his first season suiting up for a powerhouse prep-school team in Indiana, Syracuse basketball four-star recruiting target Aden Holloway has put forth some really impressive showings at several big-time events.

The latest dazzling by the 6-foot-1 point guard came at the prestigious 2022 Spalding Hoophall Classic, which featured a bevy of top-flight squads and took place at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Holloway, a junior at the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., and his teammates competed against two fellow top-10 groups at this event, and the Orange recruiting prospect certainly caught the attention of national analysts and scouts for his play at this year’s Spalding Hoophall Classic.

The La Lumiere School fell by a couple of points to the mighty Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., but then Holloway and his teammates responded with a tremendous two-point triumph over the juggernaut AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Ariz., a unit whose line-up features former ‘Cuse recruiting target Chance Westry, a 2022 four-star guard committed to Auburn.

Let’s look at how Syracuse basketball target Aden Holloway fared.

Per theseasonticket.com, the La Lumiere School lost to the Oak Hill Academy, 66-61. In 28 minutes, Holloway was 5-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, compiling 16 points and three rebounds.

When the La Lumiere School squeaked by the AZ Compass Prep School, 54-52, Holloway registered 14 points, four boards, three assists and three steals.

Holloway is a consensus top-80 prospect in the 2023 cycle, according to the primary recruiting services. Some recruiting Web sites rate him as a top-50 player and a top-10 point guard in this class.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star hears from blue-bloods a lot; what about SU? (itlh; Adler)

Five-star junior Matas Buzelis, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer, recently detailed in an interview which schools he hears from on a weekly basis.

Was the Orange on his list? Unfortunately, not. Does this mean the ‘Cuse has no shot at the 6-foot-10 Buzelis, a guard/wing who suits up for the powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.? I hope that’s not the case, although I am the first to admit that I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Buzelis’ inner circle.

One thing I’ve always wondered when it comes to the recruiting processes of high-school prospects is just how important it is that a particular college team is in “regular” communication with these players.

Because a college squad may be in really great shape with a high-school prospect and not have to communicate quite as much as, say, another team that has ground to make up, so to speak, in that player’s recruitment.

In any event, when asked by recruiting guru Joe Tipton of on3.com which schools he hears from on a weekly basis, Buzelis replied, “I hear from Michigan, Florida State, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Wake Forest.”

Syracuse basketball coaches did reportedly visit with five-star Matas Buzelis last year.

As we’ve noted in the past, Orange coaches did travel to the Brewster Academy in mid-September to visit with Buzelis and several of his prep-school teammates.

And I credit the ‘Cuse coaching staff for getting involved with Buzelis relatively early on, as Syracuse basketball offered him in November of 2020, well before his recruitment took off and his national rankings soared.

Now, is there mutual interest these days between Buzelis and the ‘Cuse? I do not know. To my knowledge, Buzelis hasn’t trimmed his list of contenders, so my hope is that the Orange remains in contention.

No. 6 Duke only ACC team in AP Top 25; Georgia Tech's Josh Pastner thinks UNC is a top-10 team - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

This week’s AP Top 25 Poll is out. Once again, only one ACC men’s basketball team is in the poll: the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils.

Only two other ACC programs even received votes in the poll: Miami and North Carolina.

POLL ALERT: Gonzaga reclaims No. 1 in AP Top 25, edging out No. 2 Auburn after wild week; Baylor falls to 5th, USC to 16th.
Full poll: NCAA College Basketball Rankings: AP Top Basketball 25 Poll | AP News pic.twitter.com/9hiLABLbtg

Currently, only two ACC teams land inside the top 25 of KenPom’s adjusted efficiency margins: Duke and North Carolina. Virginia Tech is the only other team inside the top 45.

At least one ACC coach strongly disagrees with North Carolina’s ranking: Josh Pastner of Georgia Tech.

The always loquacious Pastner ranted about this on this week’s ACC basketball teleconference: “I think they’re good enough to go to the Final Four.”

“They’re a Top 10 team. I don’t get why they’re not ranked.”

Of course, over the weekend, Georgia Tech lost to North Carolina for the second time this season. The Tar Heels have outscored the Yellow Jackets by a total of 40 points across two matchups.

A Syracuse restaurant opened with a buzz last summer. Six months later, it’s closed (PS; Cazentre)

Luna Loca, a “California Tex Mex” restaurant that opened to much acclaim in downtown Syracuse last summer, has closed permanently.

The restaurant at 304 E. Onondaga St. near Columbus Circle (in the former location of The Mission) served its last meals on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Owners Ryan and Leigh Ann Benz, who also operate the Oh My Darling! restaurant on South Salina Street downtown, had announced the Luna Loca closing via an Instagram post on Friday.

“Thank you! To our loyal customers and community, after loving this business and the team that made it what it was, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors. Our last day is Saturday, January 15. We have loved what this brand has become and appreciate everyone that dined in our space! Thank you for understanding and continue to stay healthy. We will honor all Luna gift cards at Oh My Darling! For any questions please email us at info@darlingsyr.com

Ryan Benz declined further comment when contacted by syracuse.com today, other than to text: “Industry challenges right now are well documented.”
