Welcome to National Dog Fighting Awareness Day!

The ASPCA coined April 8 as National Dog Fighting Awareness Day each and every year to reveal the truth behind dogfighting and encourage dog lovers around the nation to take action to prevent and/or stop this cruel act.

There’s no wonder why a day has been developed to raise awareness of dogfighting crimes. Dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states, but the ASPCA believes there are still tens of thousands of dogfighting rings in the United States alone.

Dogfighting is a brutal “sport” where dogs are trained to severely wound or kill their opponent.

The dogs involved in dogfighting become loyal to their “owner” in many cases and seek to please them. These dogs have been trained to believe fighting is equal to loyalty.

This is a kill or be-killed sport. The losing opponent often does not receive any type of veterinary care and is left to pass away alone.

Syracuse basketball player Joe Girard joined the podcast to talk about this past season for the Orange, how he handles haters on social media and how his role could change dramatically next season.

Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball (audacy.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Former local Syracuse HS product, Quincy Ballard, is back on the market after two seasons at Florida State. The Center is up visiting Syracuse this weekend. Could he be the Frank Anselem Replacement next season? Should fans be excited if Syracuse adds Quincy Ballard? What does he bring to the table? Would this be the only move Syracuse would make in the transfer portal this year? We tackle all of that and more. Also, Syracuse has reportedly added Bryant on the non-conference schedule for next season

The best fit for the 22-23 Syracuse men’s basketball roster might be one who got away (thiaam; Wall)

As we preview the 22-23 Syracuse Orange men’s basketball roster we’ve talked a lot about the Orange needing a back-up center and more shooting. Personally I’m on record saying that the Syracuse coaches should be looking for a Cole Swider replacement at the power forward spot first and a former Orange reserve would have been an ideal fit.

During his Syracuse career Robert Braswell dealt with injuries which limited his playing time. He emerged in the 2021 post-season when he played more than 20 minutes in four of the five Syracuse ACC/NCAA Tournament games. He was a crucial part of Jim Boeheim’s March strategy to surround Buddy with four of his best defenders. Braswell provided floor spacing and athleticism in the back of the Syracuse 2-3 zone.

During that March run, Braswell shot 14-25 from the field including 7-16 from 3. He helped the Orange hold onto leads against San Diego State and West Virginia with his activity on the wing in the zone and Syracuse fans saw him emerge as a trusted reserve.

Syracuse basketball 4-star PG recruit, Philly team poised for big 2022-23 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2024 four-star recruiting target Robert Wright III recently helped lead his Philadelphia high-school squad to a state championship, and a high-school hoops expert thinks that Wright and his teammates are positioned well to do stellar things next season.

Not too long ago, the talented 6-foot-1 point guard collected 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists as Neumann-Goretti High School defeated Quaker Valley High School out of Leetsdale, Pa., by a final of 93-68 to capture the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (“PIAA”) 4A state title for the 2021-22 campaign.

As Neumann-Goretti High School went on its excellent post-season run, Wright averaged an impressive 21.8 points per contest, according to Rich Flanagan, who writes for the Philadelphia Sports Digest and City of Basketball Love.

For the entire 2021-22 stanza, Wright generated 19.3 points, 4.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game, per his bio on the MaxPreps Web site. Neumann-Goretti High School, by the way, wrapped up the most recent term with an overall mark of 23-4.

Syracuse basketball 2022 class, w/ Judah Mintz, boasts scoring & balance (itlh; Adler)

In his senior season for the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., new Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star commit Judah Mintz was among the scoring leaders for the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (“NIBC”), a super league of sorts featuring some of the country’s premier independent basketball academies and prep-school squads.

The 6-foot-3 Mintz, who recently picked the ‘Cuse over other finalists DePaul, Wake Forest and N.C. State, gives the Orange a total of six commits in its 2022 cycle.

According to most recruiting services, Mintz is the highest-rated commit for the ‘Cuse in the 2022 class, with ESPN ranking him at No. 35 across the country. He’s also deemed a top-10 guard in this cycle.

In adding Mintz, the Orange has seen the scoring prowess within its 2022 class get significantly enhanced. Mintz is also versatile, with the ability to suit up at both point guard and shooting guard.

Syracuse basketball has a well-balanced 2022 recruiting cycle, buoyed by four-star guard Judah Mintz.

The Orange’s six commits in 2022 cover all five positions: a four-star point guard, a four-star combo guard, a four-star shooting guard/small forward, a four-star small forward who likely can play either forward spot, a three-star power forward who probably could play some center, and a three-star power forward/center.

Pittsburgh Basketball: 5 key storylines heading into 2022 offseason (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Pittsburgh Basketball ended the 2021-22 season with an 11-21 record, starting off with a blowout home loss to The Citadel and ending it with a blowout loss to Boston College in the ACC Tournament.

It was a season filled with storylines, both good and bad. The Panthers lost guard Nike Sibande in an exhibition game before veteran Ithiel Horton was suspended for over half the season after an off-the-court incident. This was a team that just never could get its footing, losing several buy games in the non-conference.

It wasn’t all bad, as Pittsburgh was able to win six ACC games for the third straight year. That includes wins over Louisville, rival Syracuse, and a shocking road win over North Carolina before they made their run to the national title game.

But as has happened before, Pitt lost its final five games of the season, with the last four coming by 20+ points. After thinking that head coach Jeff Capel was “safe”, his job certainly was under fire in the first couple of weeks after the ACC Tournament. However, he’s set to return for the 2022-23 campaign, one of the many storylines that can be talked about in the offseason.

Considering Coach Capel’s confirmed status, there’s no reason to go any more in-depth. Instead, let’s take a look at what’s left of the roster, as well as what’s to come in the looming weeks for Pittsburgh Basketball as the transfer portal heats up, including a look at who’s leaving and who’s coming.

Downtown arcade bar with fun cuisine plays to the kids at heart (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Jerome)

(As the mom of two preschoolers, eating out as a family can be a challenge to say the least. Between the highchairs, kids’ menus and sippy cups, dining at restaurants sure looks different than it did a few years ago. But as a foodie, I’m determined to not let these houligans ... I mean, the loves of my life ... keep me from enjoying one of my favorite hobbies. Join me on my quest to find great family-friendly restaurants in CNY, where you don’t have to choose between a delicious meal or getting the side-eye.)

It can be difficult for working parents to get downtown during the week, so when Three Lives launched its “pajama & cartoon” brunch we were excited to give the gaming-themed bar in Armory Square a try. We finally got that chance last weekend when we met my parents for a pre-show meal before a matinee performance at the Landmark.

The event description sounded perfect for our group of six whose ages span 70 years: “We’ll provide the food, fun and cartoons to vibe to. This is an ‘E for Everyone’ event for kids of all ages!” Garrett was incredibly excited to wear his pajamas to a restaurant, and I couldn’t wait to try a donut slider.

The place was already busy when we arrived at 11 a.m., but we were surprised not to see any other families when we walked inside. We knew we had misinterpreted the kid-friendliness when the host informed us they didn’t have any high chairs. Worse, the few regular tables were full so our only option would be bar height.

Celebrate National Dog Fighting Awareness Day by remembering:

Can't believe there's a day to remind us where they hold dog fights. Seem barbaric.
