Welcome to Geek Pride Day!

Geeks and geek culture are celebrated and promoted today. The day began in 2006, but various precursors came before it. The Geek Pride Festival, organized by Tim McEachern, was held at a bar in Albany, New York, from 1998 to 2000. Dick Morley, the "father" of the programmable logic controller, organized Geek Pride Days at his retreat in New Hampshire, beginning in 2001. The Geek Pride Day we celebrate today originated in Spain, coming from an idea from Spanish blogger Germán Martínez in 2006. He chose May 25 as its date because that is the anniversary of the debut of the original Star Wars film, which was released in 1977. In Madrid, 300 self-proclaimed geeks played a game of human Pac-Man together on the day. Rights and responsibilities for geeks were also written up. These included rights such as "the right to not be 'in-style'" and "the right to not like football or any other sport," as well as responsibilities such as "attend every geeky movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else."

Syracuse Basketball: Highly encouraging that 4-star Brewster guard to visit (itlh; Adler)

We’ve documented on numerous occasions of late that Syracuse basketball coaches appear to be prioritizing 2023 four-star shooting guard Reid Ducharme in this cycle.

And while the 6-foot-6 Ducharme, a top-100 prospect in 2023 per multiple recruiting services, has plenty of impressive suitors, it does seem that he has high interest in the Orange as well.

To that end, Ducharme plans to make an official visit to the ‘Cuse campus from June 14 to June 16, according to an article from SyracuseOnSI publisher Mike McAllister.

Naturally, this is a highly encouraging development for the Orange and its fan base. Ducharme is one of the top shooters across the country in his cycle, according to national analysts and scouts.

He also put forth a really strong junior season for the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., landing on the All-NEPSAC (“New England Preparatory School Athletic Council”) Class AAA second team.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star recruit, fast-rising target ball out in Baltimore (itlh; Adler)

A Syracuse basketball five-star recruit and a newer, fast-rising target both continue to perform at an ultra-high level in AAU contests, according to experts.

Last month, during NCAA live periods on the grassroots basketball circuit where college coaches could watch high-school players compete in person, both 2024 five-star big man Derik Queen and 2023 wing/forward Tafara Gapare earned the praise of various national analysts and scouts for their performances.

More recently, the 6-foot-10 Gapare, a scorching-hot prospect in his class, did quite well at the annual GymRat Challenge in Albany, N.Y.

The 6-foot-9 Queen, meanwhile, was one of the stars at the recently held KYDA Invitational in Scranton, Pa.

Two Syracuse basketball recruits crushed things in Baltimore last weekend.
This past Sunday, at the Saint Frances Academy, an AAU event called the Battle of Baltimore took place, as the Team Thrill and Team Melo programs suited up across various recruiting cycles.

Queen plays for the Baltimore-based Team Thrill in the Under Armour Association (“UAA”) league, while Gapare is a member of the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league.

In a tweet, national scouting service ELITE High School Scouting listed Queen and Gapare among its standouts at the Battle of Baltimore event.

SU recruits (left to right) Justin Taylor, Peter Carey, Chris Bunch, Judah Mintz attend the Duke game in the Carrier Dome on Feb. 26, 2022.

Syracuse’s big basketball Class of 2022 is trickling into town: ‘Everyone’s super excited’ (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse’s Class of 2022 does not qualify as the largest men’s basketball recruiting haul in program history. But adding a transfer to the mix provides an asterisk to a number that already tied as the most ever.

Six freshmen – Maliq Brown, Chris Bunch, Peter Carey, Quadir Copeland, Judah Mintz and Justin Taylor – have either arrived on campus this past weekend or will be trickling into town soon. They know each other, some from previous AAU or prep school teams, others after either meeting at the Carrier Dome for last winter’s Duke game or from various ping-ponging texts.

“It seems like we’ve got a really good group of guys who are all kind of familiar with each other and see the same vision and want to impact our program,” SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara said.

Taylor’s tentacles run through every new Orange recruit and began with Benny Williams. Taylor and Williams were once AAU teammates and Williams, now a Syracuse sophomore, alerted the Orange staff about Taylor.

Taylor then paid the favor forward. He told SU coaches about his longtime friend and former AAU teammate Maliq Brown, who eventually agreed to play for Syracuse, too. Taylor and Benny Williams were once AAU teammates with Judah Mintz, SU’s most recent freshman signee.

Taylor, too, played a final season of high school basketball at IMG Academy with Copeland. And he met Bunch and Carey in Syracuse for the Duke game last winter, when Mintz was on campus for a visit.

Four of SU’s freshmen reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia (the DMV). Carey (Massachusetts) and Bunch (Oklahoma) are the geographical outliers.

“I didn’t know Chris and Peter until I went on the visit (for the Duke game),” Taylor said. “I talked to them a little before. We’ve been talking since. I think that will make it a lot easier. We already know each other. There’s already a comfort level with each other. And there’s a lot of us.”

“Going in there, I already know a lot of these guys,” Brown said. “I know what they like to do. I’m familiar with them, so it’ll be easy to adjust to.”

The Fly More Than You Fall cast in Utah, from left to right: Jennifer Fouche, Lexi Walker and Syracuse University's Thom Miller.

A musical with roots at Syracuse University makes it to Broadway (PS; $; Veiga)

A musical that got its start at Syracuse University is making its way to Broadway.

SU professor Thom Miller was part of the original workshop of the musical “Fly More Than You Fall,” the story of a father and daughter coping with a wife and mother’s terminal illness. The workshop took place in the drama department at SU.

Miller, who played the lead role of the dad in the workshop, reprised his role in a production in Utah. That’s when it caught the attention of his friend and former boss, Broadway producer Marc David Levine (‘Mr. Saturday Night’, ‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’).

One day in 2019, Levine saw a Facebook post from Miller about his role as the dad at the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts on the Utah Valley University campus. So Levine went to see the show.

“I thought… I haven’t seen Thom in years. He was such a great guy,” Levine said. “I’m gonna fly to Utah to see him in this show.”

‘Fly More Than You Fall’ was based on a book by Eric Holmes, and has lyrics by Holmes and Nat Zegree. The musical explores the terrible death of a mother, and how the 14-year-old daughter she left behind, Malia, and her father, Paul, must deal with her passing.
