Welcome to VCR Day!
VCR Day is a day to celebrate the videocassette recorder. Over time, VCR's have been used to play back home movies and commercially made films and programs, as well as to record programming off of television. Prototypes and early versions of the VCR were made in the 1950's, but they cost thousands of dollars and were only used at large television networks. The Telcan, made it England in 1962, was the first home VCR, which cost what would be the equivalent of over $1,600 in 2014 US currency. It could only record for 20 minutes at a time and was exclusively in black and white. Other various VCR's competed for the market for the rest of the 1960's and into the 1970's. In 1972, commercial films were available to play on VCR's for the first time, and by the mid 1970's VCR's began having mass market appeal. At this time there were a few incompatible types of tape cassettes that were competing for the market share, and eventually the two main types to emerge were Sony's Betamax, sometimes just known as Beta, and JVC's VHS, which stands for Video Home System. This competition was known as a "format war". Eventually VHS won out, mainly because of their longer recording time. VHS was the preferred way to play and record video until shortly after 2000, when DVD's overtook the market and VCR's ended up in basements, attics, and yard sales.

SU basketball announces exhibition with Southern New Hampshire (PS; Waters)
Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team will play an exhibition game against Southern New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome, the school said in a release on Monday.
The Orange will host Southern New Hampshire, which plays in the NCAA’s Division II, on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
This will be the second meeting between the two schools in the last five years. Southern New Hampshire came to the Dome for an exhibition ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Southern New Hampshire finished 13-11 a year ago and earned a berth to the NE10 Championship.
Syracuse’s regular-season opener will be against Lehigh on Nov. 7.
Other non-conference games that have been officially announced are a Nov. 15 home game against Colgate, a Nov. 26 meeting with Bryant at the Dome, a Dec. 6 home game with Oakland and a visit from former Big East rival Georgetown on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Syracuse will also participate in the Empire Classic (Temple, Richmond, St. John’s) on Nov. 21-22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

On June 15th, college basketball coaches can officially begin contacting high school athletes about potential athletic scholarships.
Having the opportunity to speak and meet with college coaches has historically been the needle mover for some student-athletes who have an idea of what they want but are not sold on exactly where they see themselves.
In regard to where the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team is with their recruiting, they have already offered 12 recruits as of June 5th, according to 247 sports. Some of those offers have seemed to have moved on from the Orange, but it’s early enough that we’ll take a look at any recent updates to the list of 2023 offers:
Blue Cain: Cain has not had any official visits to any one of the five universities he’s being scouted by as of this writing. With no one knowing really where his interests lie, it's hard to project where the rising senior will end up at the college level.
DJ Wagner: The number two overall player in 2023, Wagner shined last week in the EYBL tournament playing for NJ Scholars. In five games, Wagner averaged 19 points, 5.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds on 49.3% shooting from the field and 37% from three. Wagner has had two official visits to Kentucky and Memphis but has offers from Syracuse and three other universities. As of this writing, Wagner's two top schools look to be Kentucky and Louisville.

Syracuse basketball 5-star priority targets on display at All-American Camp (itlh; Adler)
A handful of Syracuse basketball four-star and five-star recruiting targets in the 2023 and 2024 classes are participating in the 20th-annual Pangos All-American Camp at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, according to media reports.
This camp allows high-school prospects to showcase their talents, and numerous of this event’s alumni have gone on to star in the NBA.
At the Pangos All-American Camp, there are skills programs and other work-outs, games, speakers and seminars on topics such as brand building and name, image and likeness (“NIL”), according to the camp’s Web site.
Per a report from On3 senior national recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton, I’m counting at least seven guys in the rising junior and rising senior cycles who hold offers from the Orange and are playing in the camp.
Let’s look at Syracuse basketball top-flight recruits who are at the Pangos All-American Camp.
In the 2023 class, among those at this stellar camp are four-star center Ugonna Kingsley, four-star point guard Aden Holloway, four-star big man Papa Kante and four-star shooting guard Blue Cain.
The 7-foot Kingsley, offered by the ‘Cuse this past February, suits up for the Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Conn., and has seen his national rankings soar of late.
The 6-foot-1 Holloway, a top-10 point guard in his cycle offered by Syracuse basketball in July of 2019, is a stand-out for the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind.
The 6-foot-10 Kante, who picked up a ‘Cuse offer last August, is a power forward/center who competes for the South Kent School in South Kent, Conn.

NY lawmakers OK $10B in tax breaks to lure computer chip makers to Clay, other sites (PS; Weiner)
New York lawmakers have approved tax credits worth up to $10 billion to lure semiconductor chip manufacturers to the state, including a site in Central New York competing for a plant that would create thousands of jobs.
New York’s Excelsior jobs tax credits would be available for up to 20 years to any “green” semiconductor chip plant that meets the requirements for the incentives.
The 1,250-acre White Pine Commerce Park in Clay, owned by Onondaga County, would be the largest of any site in the state competing for the incentives, said Assemblyman Al Stirpe, D-Cicero.
Gov. Kathy Hochul asked Stirpe and state Sen. John Mannion, D-Geddes, to help shepherd the bill through the Assembly and Senate before the legislative session ended on Saturday.
Hochul told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard earlier this year that the state would offer a “very robust incentive package” for an undisclosed company to open a chip plant in Onondaga County that could employ up to 5,000 people. Hochul declined at the time to reveal details of the incentive package.
The bill that Stirpe carried for the governor will provide up to $500 million per year in job tax credits to semiconductor manufacturers that open new fabrication plants in New York.
The tax credit would be worth up to 7.5% of what a company pays in salaries and hourly wages. A company with $1 billion in salaries and wages, for example, would be eligible for a $75 million annual tax credit, Stirpe said.
To be eligible, companies would have to create at least 500 net new jobs and spend at least $3 billion in capital investments over 10 years.
In return, the chip makers would be required to build “green” plants that limit their greenhouse gas emissions and expand employment opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals.
