Welcome to World Sea Turtle Day!

World Sea Turtle Day honors and highlights the importance of sea turtles and recognizes sea turtle conservation and protection efforts around the world. It is held on the birthdate of noted sea turtle biologist Archie Carr, who founded the Sea Turtle Conservancy and helped create the community that works to protect sea turtles today.

Only a fraction of the sea turtles that once populated the Earth remain on it today. Sea turtles have been killed for their meat, eggs, skin, and shells. Their feeding and nesting habitats face destruction, and they are under threat from pollution. In particular, they are threatened by plastic dumped into the oceans.

There are seven species of sea turtles, which are also known as marine turtles. The smallest is Kemp's ridley. It can grow to about two feet in length and to a weight of close to 90 pounds. The largest is the leatherback. It can reach a length of close to six feet and usually weighs between 650 and 1,300 pounds. The other species are the green, hawksbill, olive ridley, loggerhead, and flatback.

Overview from the USS Midway in the game between Syracuse and San Diego State in first half action in the Battle on the Midway. Dennis Nett/The Post-Standard

Remembering when Syracuse played on aircraft carrier nearly 10 years ago (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

Lawrence Moten used to always say, “Things happen for a reason.’'

That certainly seems to be the case in this week’s Mailbox. I had been holding onto a question about Syracuse’s game against San Diego State on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, waiting for the right opportunity to answer the question.

Well, that opportunity came along this week thanks to Michigan State and Gonzaga.

If you have any questions relative to Syracuse, the ACC or college basketball in general, please email them to mwaters@syracuse.com.

Q: This fall will be 10 years since Syracuse and San Diego State played a basketball game on the flight deck of the USS Midway. What do you remember most about that game and the format? I don’t recall another game after that being played outside on a ship.

Josh

Mike:
This is the perfect week to answer Josh’s question because just this week reports came out that Gonzaga and Michigan State are having serious discussions about playing in San Diego on a ship.

It’s been 10 years since college teams played on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. And I’m surprised Gonzaga and Michigan State officials are considering the possibility because there were a slew of problems surrounding the games back in 2012.

Syracuse played San Diego State on the USS Midway in the 2012-13 season opener, but the game was delayed for two days because of a forecast that called for rain.

What I remember most about that game are the weather conditions. There was a light breeze, but on the flight deck, the wind became a problem. The wind gusts prevented players from making any shot outside of 15 feet.

Syracuse packed in its 2-3 zone defense and forced San Diego State into 1-for-18 shooting from 3-point range. Syracuse took only four 3-point shots and made one. In addition to the wind, the sun was reflecting off the ship’s tower.

That was the last of the aircraft carrier games. Also that same year, games on different ships were canceled -- one halfway through the game -- because condensation dampened the court and made it dangerous for the players.

The Syracuse-San Diego State game created some dramatic backdrops and is still a game I’ll never forget, but I would think player safety would be put at a higher premium. If Gonzaga and Michigan State do wind up playing on an aircraft carrier this November, I’ll definitely watch, but I’ll have my fingers crossed the whole time.

Eric Devendorf (44) celebrates a Boeheim's Army championship in The Basketball Tournament standing between Adam Weitsman and Kevin Belbey in Dayton, Ohio. August 3, 2021 (Donna Ditota photo)

Splashy Syracuse names, fan favorites are on roster of defending TBT champ Boeheim's Army (PS; $; Ditota)

Boeheim’s Army revealed its 2022 summer roster Wednesday in its quest to repeat as $1 million The Basketball Tournament champions.

The roster offers a splashy mix of former Syracuse University favorites and a few potential ringers to help seal the TBT deal.

Tyler Ennis and Rakeem Christmas, two former SU players long-coveted by general manager Kevin Belbey, are on the roster. So is recent SU graduate Marek Dolezaj, a fan favorite whose drawn charge against Duke big man Zion Williamson remains an iconic Orange moment.

Andrew White and CJ Fair, both of whom helped Boeheim’s Army win in 2021, will return to the roster.

D.J. Kennedy and DeAndre Kane, two of the winningest players in TBT history, will play again this season for Boeheim’s Army after waving their TBT magic over the Syracuse-based team last year. The pair had previous success as members of multiple-championship Overseas Elite teams.

Boeheim’s Army, too, has added Dee Bost, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Mississippi State and Kyle Wiltjer, the 6-foot-10 Canadian big man who played at Kentucky and Gonzaga before embarking on a pro career that started in the NBA and most recently landed in Spain’s high-level pro league.

Bost, a prodigious scorer and All-SEC performer for the Bulldogs, has mostly played abroad since his graduation from Mississippi State in 2013. He spent the 2022 season playing for Galatasaray Nef in the Turkish Pro League. Wiltjer played at Tenerife this season.

“We look at those guys and we joke they’re like grad transfers,” Kevin Belbey said of the non-Syracuse Boeheim’s Army contingent. “They’re guys that didn’t go to Syracuse but we feel fit the DNA and guys that we feel will get along with our Syracuse guys chemistry-wise on and off the court. They’re all like complementary pieces. Adam and I really wanted it to be like a puzzle -- pieces that fit together.”

Instant Juice: Syracuse alumni team Boeheim's Army announces 2022 roster - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Boeheim’s Army announcing its 2022 TBT roster:

WHAT HAPPENED: Boeheim’s Army, a group of largely former Syracuse Orange basketball players, announced its 2022 lineup via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin as it seeks to defend its TBT Championship. The roster consists of returning players Andrew White III, CJ Fair, DJ Kennedy and DeAndre Kane. Newcomers include Rakeem Christmas, Tyler Ennis, Marek Dolezaj, Kyle Wiltjer and Dee Bost.

ANALYSIS: General manager Kevin Belbey has once again put together a competitive roster of players. He’s added Syracuse NBA talents Ennis, the 18th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and Christmas, the 36th overall pick in the 2015 draft. Wiltjer, who played at Kentucky and Gonzaga, also had a brief stint with the NBA’s Houston Rockets. Those three players bump up the overall total of Boeheim’s Army players to have had NBA service to five people (joining White and Kennedy).

HERO: Two other intriguing additions are glue guy Marek Dolezaj, a 2021 SU graduate who spent the past season with the Greek team Gymnastikos Syllogos Iraklis, and Dee Bost, who is playing in the TBT for the third time, having also played with Team Challenge ALS (2019) and Playing for Jimmy V (2021).

ZERO: The two most notable absences from this year’s team are Eric Devendorf and Keifer Sykes. Devendorf had played every game for Boeheim’s Army since it started competing in the TBT and had stated the 2021 tournament would be his last one. And Sykes will be forever etched in Syracuse lore (despite having never attended) for hitting the championship-winning shot in 2021. He earned a spot with the Indiana Pacers this past season and will use the summer to try to find a way back to the NBA. Certainly, both players will be missed.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Orange will play in the Syracuse Regional from July 22-25 at SRC Arena.

Surprised the Big 12 is willing to play the SEC in this event. I would guess it will not continue once Texas and Oklahoma defect.
