Welcome to World Elephant Day!

World Elephant Day asks everyone to "help conserve and protect elephants from the numerous threats they face" and "to experience elephants in non-exploitive and sustainable environments where elephants can thrive under care and protection." It is a day to express concern, share knowledge, and support solutions for the better care of captive and wild elephants; it is a day to honor elephants, spread awareness about the critical threats they face, and to support solutions to help ensure their survival. It brings "attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants" and is "a vehicle by which organizations can rally together to give voice to the issues threatening elephants."

The day was thought up in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark, and by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, specifically by Sivaporn Dardarananda, the Foundation's Secretary-General. It was founded on August 12, 2012, by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, and first observed on that day. The Foundation is a non-profit that was started in 2002 as a Royal Initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and has the mission of acquiring captive elephants and reintroducing them to live as wild elephants in protected forest habitats. The day was created in part to celebrate the work of the Foundation. On the first World Elephant Day, Patricia Sims and Michael Clark released Return to the Forest, a documentary which focuses on the work of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation.

Syracuse Set To Step Up NIL Game With First-Ever “Collective” – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

Three months ago, Syracuse’s NIL shortcomings flashed across the pan as a short-lived topic of concern. Headlines made by other ACC players’ earnings through name-image-likeness opportunities forced SU Athletic Director John Wildhack to answer questions about what his teams were doing with regards to new NIL chances. At the time, Wildhack didn’t offer many specifics – but predicted that Syracuse would have an “NIL collective” by Fall.

Yesterday, that prediction came to fruition.

A new group called the “315 Foundation” has recently entered the fray as Syracuse’s newest collective. Its organizers, Mike Bristol and Tony DeSorbo, have been planning its unveiling for nearly a calendar year, and has been organized as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3). Per Syracuse.com, the group is planning to go public shortly.

For anyone not caught up to speed, an “NIL collective” is something new now allowed under recently-implemented name-image-likeness rules for college athletes. Simply put, collectives are a way for boosters and fans to pool money together to pay athletes to perform a service. It’s a concrete way to make sure players can get compensated for one thing or another without having to hunt for a position as a spokesman for a product, for example.

Apparently, the 315 Foundation plans to operate like so: SU athletes will perform work for selected charities and non-profits such as camps, appearances, or clinics, and then be compensated for their work in a way that will be “photographed…it’s going to be documented”, according to Bristol’s interview with Syracuse.com.

Jim Boeheim unleashes NIL tirade, calls for Syracuse to raise funds (on3.com; Nakos)

Joining Cuse Sports Talk on Wednesday afternoon, Jim Boeheim painted a clear picture of how removed he is from the NIL world.

The longtime Syracuse basketball coach has made five Final Fours. He’s won a national championship, and he’s basically trademarked the 2-3 zone defense.

Yet, Boeheim dropped the ball Wednesday. He gave the NCAA a prime example of what NIL is not supposed to be.

“One thing I’ve always heard on radio shows is the university needs to spend more money on recruiting,” he said, calling into the radio show. “The university needs to spend more money on facilities. This has been for 20 years we’ve heard this talk. Well, now’s your chance. This is your chance to help recruiting, but NIL is nothing but colleges collecting money and arranging deals for players through their collectives.

“We have a foundation, but it’s the same basic thing. Ours is a foundation, 315 Foundation, which is tax-deductible money. You can get your tax deductible.”

New York does not have a state NIL law — Senate Bill S5891F has passed both the assembly and senate — meaning the NCAA’s interim policy is the law of the land. The NCAA clearly prohibits boosters and collectives from getting involved in the recruiting process, which was outlined in May’s guidance.

Is Syracuse Forced to Ride Out Babers' Contract? (audible.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Joseph Estrella wants a second family; that’s what Syracuse basketball is (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball fanatics, myself included, will have a long couple of weeks to sweat out before the top-20 prospect and ultra-talented big man Joseph Estrella announces his future collegiate home.

The four-star Estrella, a 6-foot-11 power forward/center, recently said via social media that he expects to unveil his college choice on September 2 at the XL Sports World in Saco, Maine.

According to a variety of media reports, the ‘Cuse is firmly in the mix for Estrella, who took an official visit to the Hill not too long ago. Estrella has also officially visited Iowa, Tennessee and Marquette.

Numerous comments from national analysts and other recruiting insiders point to Joseph Estrella likely picking one of those four schools, although to be fair, he has more than two-dozen scholarship offers.

Syracuse basketball recruit Joseph Estrella details what he’s looking for in a college program.

In a recent interview with 247Sports national analyst Brandon Jenkins, Joseph Estrella said that he’s looking for a collegiate team that is a good fit for him, allowing him to play right away.

Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, Estrella told Jenkins that a program’s culture is pivotal. “I want that second family feeling,” the Orange target said.

I can’t speak for his other suitors, but I can say with utmost confidence that the ‘Cuse coaches, players and staff members are a tight-knit group.

Former Syracuse University Basketball players Eric Devendorf and Mookie Jones are teaming up to coach a new Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball League. Devendorf says the ED23 HOOPS AAU Basketball Program will start practicing this month, with tournaments starting in the fall.

"We will have both a boys and girls league for kids ages 10 under and 17 and under. This is a chance for kids to work on their skills before regular season practices start. We're excited to give the kids an opportunity to get better at basketball but more importantly be a better human being," he says.

Mookie Jones says The AAU basketball programs mission is to provide local youth with the opportunity to enhance both their basketball and life skills.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star big man target heads to elite prep-school team (itlh; Adler)

Fast-rising five-star big man Yves Missi, who was offered a scholarship by Syracuse basketball coaches late last year and has proven stellar in grassroots basketball in recent months, is headed to one of the country’s top high-school squads for his upcoming junior campaign.

The 6-foot-11 center recently said via his Twitter page that he will spend the 2022-23 season at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif. Most recently, as a sophomore, Missi attended the West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Md.

Excited to announce that next year I’ll continue my education and basketball career to prolific prep ( @ProlificPrep ). I also want to thanks West Nottingham Academy, coach Fabian ( @coach_fabian3 ) and the rest of the coaching staff for being the first to believe in me. pic.twitter.com/5L9BxV6ji6
— Yves Thierry Ouwe Missi (@Yves_missi) August 1, 2022

A stand-out over the spring and summer months for the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league, Missi picked up an Orange offer in December of 2021, before his recruitment really blew up.

More recently, Missi has vaulted to five stars and into the top-15 nationally within the 2024 class, per multiple recruiting Web sites. At the EYBL’s recently held Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., ‘Cuse head coach Jim Boeheim was in attendance for at least one PSA Cardinals game.
Syracuse basketball faces intense competition for five-star big man Yves Missi.

To date, per recruiting services and his Twitter page, Missi holds offers from teams such as Seton Hall, Kansas, Baylor, LSU, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Georgetown, UConn, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia Tech, Harvard, UCLA, St. John’s, Rutgers, DePaul, Norfolk State and USC Upstate.

Duke Launches Another NIL Approach (DBR; King)

Well this is interesting: Duke Athletics, in an attempt to keep up in the age of NIL, has launched the Blue Devil Exchange. This is a marketplace for NIL opportunities. Essentially it’s a data base that has the student information so that businesses can message them and so forth.

It also has stuff on Duke’s end that helps to keep track and organize payments and tax information.

It’s pretty smart and, given Duke’s huge profile in basketball, will only help. Because, invariably, some kids - well, anyone, really - is going to pay attention to the higher offer. If we've learned nothing from Kentucky basketball, we’ve learned that.

Kidding!

Sort of, anyway. The late Bret Bearup told us how the system worked at UK when he was there and named names, too.

But we digress.

Duke is smart to do this. The ACC should be working on this front as well. The conference is behind the other major conferences in revenue and while NIL does not go to the schools, obviously, it is nonetheless something you’d want to be good at.

Why?

Because if you draw the best talent, it will absolutely help the ACC’s revenue.

Yes, it’s asymmetric, but it makes sense. Take this hypothetical: if Duke football could promise recruits $500,000 more than, say, Kentucky, recruiting will improve. And better talent means better results.

MBB: Who develops talent best?

If you recruit top players who go on to the NBA, that's just expected - but what if they weren't top recruits?

— Parker (@CBKReport) August 11, 2022

It pretty much tells us what we already knew: UVA under Tony Bennett's coaching has been developing talent to an NBA-level (only Michigan does it better). UNC and Duke also sent a player or two via this route, but those two mostly just recruit NBA players right out of high school.

Guac toast at Rise and Grind Cafe in Township 5. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Longtime CNY restaurateur opens cafe in Township 5 (PS; $; Mille
r)

A longtime Central New York restaurant owner this week opened Township 5′s only coffee shop.

Marty Richardson, who has run Nestico’s...too! diner in Fairmount for 24 years and Chelsea’s Restaurant on Onondaga Hill for two years, opened her second Rise & Grind Cafe on Monday morning. She also has a Rise & Grind in the plaza next to Nestico’s at 4119 W. Genesee St.

Township 5 management approached Richardson last year about opening a coffee shop, the same time she was looking to open another cafe.

“The timing was perfect,” she said. “They really needed a coffee shop out there.”

The new Rise & Grind is located across the parking lot from several medical offices, including Upstate University Medicine. It’s in the building that houses Elite Personal Fitness, near the Brasserie Bar & Bistro and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The fact that JB is complaining about NIL, I think he must feel he’s losing ground in recruiting. JP to Tennessee is probably likely. There’s a reason he went to the radio to complain. It’s his mo when he’s he’s not happy about something.
