Welcome to National Roller Coaster Day!

National Roller Coaster Day is dedicated to roller coasters, and has been celebrated since 1986. In the 17th century, "Russian Mountains", which were constructed hills of ice used as slides, were near what would become St. Petersburg. These were precursors to modern day roller coasters, which were first patented and built in the late 19th century in America. John G. Taylor was issued a patent in 1872 for a roller coaster in Rhode Island, and LaMarcus Adna Thompson built one in Coney Island in 1884. Early roller coasters were wooden, but now steel is mainly used in making them.

How to Observe National Roller Coaster Day

National Roller Coaster Day should be celebrated by riding on a roller coaster. Here are some amusement parks across the United States that have roller coasters. If you don't have the courage to ride in a roller coaster, make a trip to the National Roller Coaster Museum.

Syracuse Orange: CBB Rank 2022, Number 84 (cbbreview.com; Mlodzinski)

The Boeheim brothers move on, but the Syracuse Orange still has two talented seniors remaining in the starting lineup.

CBB Review is once again ranking the top 100 teams heading into the 2022-23 season. Each day we will reveal the next team until we reach the team slotted at number one. Coming in ranked number 84 are the Syracuse Orange. Last year’s Syracuse Orange team made history as Jim Boeheim coached his two sons, Buddy and Jimmy. While the storylines were second to none, the team finished with a losing record – the first in coach Boeheim’s career. While he had been quoted on how special the season was, it’s clear that the Orange as a program are in need of a refresh. They’ll surely get that this season, as the roster is dominated by freshmen and unproven returners. To those who have not, click here to learn more about our preseason top 100 teams heading into the 2022-23 college basketball season.

Head Coach: Jim Boeheim (47th season)

2021-22 Record: 16-17 (9-11)

2022 Postseason Finish: No Postseason

Notable Departures: Bourama Sidibe (Grad), Buddy Boeheim (Pro), Cole Swider (Pro), Frank Anselem (Transfer / Georgia), Jimmy Boeheim (Pro)

Projected Rotation

PG: Symir Torrence (6-3, 195, Sr.) 2021-22 stats: 2.6 points, 2.9 assists, 1.6 rebounds SG: Joe Girard III (6-1, 190, Sr.) 2021-22 stats: 13.8 points, 4.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 40.3 3P% SF: Chris Bunch (6-7, 180, Fr.) 247Sports Composite #105 overall rated recruit PF: Benny Williams (6-8, 208, So.) 2021-22 stats: 1.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, C: Jesse Edwards (6-11, 230, Sr.) 2021-22 stats: 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 2.8 blocks, 1.1 steals, 67.8 FG% 6: Judah Mintz (6-3, 172, Fr.) 247 Sports Composite #50 overall rated recruit 7: John Bol Ajak (6-10, 216, Rs.-Jr.) 2021-22 stats: 0.4 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 12 games played 8: Justin Taylor (6-6, 205, Fr.) 247Sports Composite #124 overall rated recruit 9: Quadir Copeland (6-6, 203, Fr.) 247 Sports Composite #136 overall rated recruit 10: Peter Carey (6-11, 200, Fr.) 247Sports Composite 3-star rated recruit 11: Maliq Brown (6-8, 213, Fr.) 247Sports Composite 3-star rated recruit

Team MVP: Jesse Edwards

While most may point to sharpshooter Joe Girard III, I’m actually going with the other senior on the team, Jesse Edwards. Edwards turned into a dominant ACC big man, improving so much across the board, it seems like a rook he wasn’t named the ACC’s Most Improved Player. NC State’s Dereon Seabron won it instead. At the very least, Edwards showed that he can not only be the starting center for the Syracuse Orange but can legitimately shine for SU in the frontcourt. His scoring improved drastically and his rim protection was arguably the best part of his game. Expect another monster season from Edwards.

Make-or-Break Player: Benny Williams

The Orang has so many freshmen that will be make-or-break players. Judah Mintz is likely to be counted upon in a major scoring role. Chris Bunch and Justin Taylor could both start at small forward throughout the season. But sophomore Benny Williams is the one Syracuse Orange player that has to turn it around. Last season was a whirlwind for Williams, so came in as one of the highest-rated recruits in Cuse’s history. He struggled mightily on the court and often battled questions of whether or not he would consider transferring out of the program. But Williams stayed consistent with his approach – he came to Syracuse University to play basketball. This year, even more pressure will be on Williams to perform. With the Boeheim bros and Cole Swider out, and a whole lot of freshmen in, Williams will need to help fill a scoring role. Orange fans will likely be more patient, due to his lackluster freshman season, but Williams will need to show some type of improvement to help the team win games.

Analytic to Know: 15th in Adjusted Offense in 2021-22

Can the Orange repeat the offensive showings they had last season? Buddy, Cole, and Jimmy had no trouble scoring the basketball, as the main reason why they finished so high up in adjusted offense last season. But this year looks to be different. JG3 and Edwards are the only proven scorers back and Syracuse didn’t pick up any transfers to help mend the losses. That means either the two seniors will have to really turn it up, or the Orange are going to be led primarily by freshmen. Either way, this has the feeling of the 2018-19 Syracuse Orange team that only averaged 69.7 points per game.

Roundtable: Who starts for Syracuse men’s basketball in 2022-23? (TNIAAMl Szuba, Wall & De Guzman)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season will of course be preceded by football in the coming weeks, but as the calendar turns to mid-August, it marks just ten weeks from the first hoops exhibition game.

On the back of last week’s news of Syracuse starting a new NIL collective under the 315 Foundation name, Jim Boeheim made rounds on local radio last week to disseminate more information on that topic.

After appearing on Orange Nation, Steve Infanti asked the head coach about a media personality’s projected starting lineup for Syracuse, which included three guards in Judah Mintz, Joe Girard and Symir Torrence. Boeheim wouldn’t give any hints as to who might start, but he dismissed the idea of thee guards starting and suggested Syracuse would only use that lineup if it were playing man-to-man defense.

So with that, it felt like the perfect opportunity for the TNIAAM team to opine on this year’s potential starting five. There’s no way you’ll disagree with any of us.

Kevin: PG - Judah Mintz, SG- Joe Girard, SF- Chris Bunch, PF- Benny Williams, C- Jesse Edwards

Girard and Edwards are the only two locks of this group so let me explain my reasons for the others. Mintz didn’t come to Syracuse to sit the bench and his ability to create offense is going to be needed on a team that lacks that aspect. Bunch has the reputation as a shooter and floor-spacer and can help defenses from collapsing in the paint. Williams’ rebounding is going to be needed and the hope is that he can find ways to contribute around the rim on offense. Symir Torrence seems like the top choice for 6th man and depending on the opponent the Orange could use a 3-guard line-up more often this season.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball: Who's Going to Start for SU Basketball in 2022-23? on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Matt Bonaparte and Owen Valentine discuss the upcoming men's basketball season on the hill by deciphering each of their 2022-23 starting lineups.

Syracuse Basketball: Judah Mintz to ‘probably’ start at PG, per head coach (itlh; Adler)

Ever since 2022 four-star combo guard Judah Mintz committed to Syracuse basketball at the end of March, I’ve been curious to see what his role would be for the Orange during the upcoming campaign.

The 6-foot-3 Mintz, a versatile combo guard who can suit up at point guard or shooting guard, is an efficient three-level scorer who gets after it on the defensive end, according to analysts and scouts. He was a stand-out in the 2021-22 season for the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.

‘Cuse head coach Jim Boeheim isn’t afraid to start players in their freshmen years, if he feels they’re ready. But I kind of figured that Mintz might be the team’s 6th man in 2022-23, given that guards Joe Girard III and Symir Torrence are both seniors.

However, in a recent article from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria, Boeheim provided a glimpse of what the near-term future may hold for Mintz, a consensus top-80 prospect in the 2022 cycle who was rated as high as No. 33 nationally by ESPN.

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim lauded freshman guard Judah Mintz.

Zagoria’s recent piece was primarily about rising-sophomore forward Benny Williams, although Boeheim had this to say about Judah Mintz.

“He’s really good, he’ll be a pro. He’ll probably start at the 1 and move Joe over to the 2, we’ll see how that goes.”

First and foremost, it’s still the summer, and the 2022-23 campaign is a few months away, so we’ll have to wait and see what Boeheim’s initial starting rotation ultimately entails.

Secondly, I’m glad to read that Girard may end up as a shooting guard within the 2022-23 line-up for the Orange, and I’m not alone in this sentiment.

As the ‘Cuse struggled to a 16-17 record a stanza ago, many Syracuse basketball fans chimed in on social media and via chat rooms that they felt Girard would have more success as a shooting guard, rather than the squad’s point guard.

Syracuse Basketball: Expert has Benny Williams as break-out ACC player (itlh; Adler)

This spring, Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim said some pretty encouraging things about rising-sophomore forward Benny Williams, who played sparingly as a freshman and served as the subject of much debate among Orange fans for his relatively small role in the 2021-22 campaign.

But Boeheim isn’t alone in his optimism for what he believes Williams can, and will, do for the ‘Cuse in the upcoming term. Noted national pundit Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports recently included the 6-foot-8 Williams in his off-season report on the Atlantic Coast Conference ahead of the 2022-23 stanza.

For one, Rothstein projects that Williams will be a part of the Orange’s starting rotation when the 2022-23 season begins in a few months’ time. I agree with Rothstein’s assertion here.

Additionally, the CBS Sports writer has included Benny Williams among his 10 break-out players within the ACC prior to the 2022-23 campaign commencing. I could envision this transpiring for Williams as well.

Syracuse basketball forward Benny Williams is poised for good things as a sophomore.

Williams, a Bowie, Md., native, arrived on the Hill as a highly touted freshman who spent his senior season at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Nationally speaking in the 2021 recruiting cycle, all of the primary recruiting services rated Williams as four stars and in the top-50 overall. , for one, had him as five stars and in the top-25 across the country.

Syracuse Basketball: Jesse Edwards competing for Dutch national team (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball senior center Jesse Edwards looks to capitalize on a strong junior season, before he got injured this past February, and put forth a senior year where I believe he could absolutely contend for All-ACC honors.

The 6-foot-11 Edwards, a native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, is joining the Dutch national team this week, according to a press release from SU Athletics.

The statement says that Jesse Edwards, one of the leading shot-blockers in the Atlantic Coast Conference during the 2021-22 campaign, will play in international competitions such as World Cup qualifying and EuroBasket, which is also known as the European Basketball Championship.

Per the cuse.com release, Edwards has both trained and played with the Dutch national squad over the course of the last two summers. By the way, if you want to find box scores for when Edwards plays for the Dutch national team, it looks like they can be found here.

The number of counties under a drought watch (yellow) has more than doubled over the past three weeks.

Drought watch area more than doubles in Upstate NY as rain remains scarce (PS; Coin)

The number of Upstate New York counties heading toward drought has more than doubled in the past three weeks, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

In late July, 21 counties in Central and Western New York were placed under a drought watch. That number has climbed to 49 counties, extending from far Western New York to the lower Hudson Valley.

A drought watch is the first of four levels of drought advisories issued by the DEC. No water restrictions are in place.

The advisories are based on rainfall, levels of lakes and reservoirs, groundwater levels and water flow in streams and rivers. All of those are below normal.

Most of Upstate has had a rainfall shortfall this summer. Some areas under a drought watch have seen just 25% to 50% of the normal amount of rain since mid-June. Temperatures have also been 2 to 3 degrees warmer than normal, leading to more evaporation and lost moisture from the soil.

Syracuse set a record for the hottest start to August since records began 120 years ago.

After a weeklong reprieve, Upstate will get hot again, starting late this week. Highs will likely be in the upper 80s this weekend and into next week.

The good news is that next week is likely to be rainier than normal, the National Weather Service said. It’s too early to know how much rain will fall and where, or whether it will be enough to make up for the lack of rain so far.
