Welcome to National Elephant Appreciation Day!

In 1970, when Wayne Hepburn's daughter, Lisa, was a child, she gave him a paperweight that had a base with a parade of elephants around it. He became interested in elephants and kept buying elephant figurines and other paraphernalia, learning more about elephants, and riding elephants. By the time Hepburn created Elephant Appreciation Day in 1996, he had thousands of elephant artifacts: figurines, books, toys, clothing items, jewelry, art, and music boxes.

Lightning round for Mike’s Mailbox: Nicknames, uniforms, Weitsman’s next guest (PS; $; Waters)

With the start of the college basketball season just over a month away, the backlog of questions here at Mike’s Mailbox is becoming a problem.

At my current rate, I’m not going to get to a lot of them before more questions start flooding in when the season begins.

So we’re going with a lightning round of questions this week. Short questions and short answers.

Here we go!

Q : Do you anticipate SU ever wearing blue uniforms again while Jim Boeheim is still coaching?

Mike:
No. The last time SU wore anything other than home white or road orange uniforms was the 2014 loss to Boston College. Syracuse wore orange jerseys and blue shorts. Hideous.

Q: I was curious if you have the nicknames of some of your favorite SU players during the Boeheim era.

Mike:
Theodore “Mookie” Jones. Antonio “Scoop” Jardine. Ronneil “Rev” Herron. Dave “Gus” Siock.

Q: Does Syracuse hold any private scrimmages with any other colleges?

Mike:
Teams can play two exhibition games. Some teams play a private scrimmage instead of one of those exhibition games. Syracuse has always gone with two exhibitions.

Syracuse men’s basketball: factors that could impact 2023 recruitment (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

While the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season looms over the horizon, the program has been busy behind the scenes working toward the upcoming 2023 recruiting class.

SU faces a difficult road ahead in maintaining the historical success of men’s basketball. For this season, just three players on the Orange’s roster are seniors. An astounding nine players on the team are underclassmen, six of which are incoming freshmen.

Moving forward, Syracuse will be embracing a new direction for a team that has consistently been the best of the best in the NCAA. With recruitment season beginning for the Orange, there are many factors at play to watch in the upcoming months.

The Future of Coach Boeheim

It’s no secret: head coach Jim Boeheim has been incredibly important for Syracuse since he took the job back in 1976. The coaching resume, success, and deep postseason runs are well documented.

Yet, it’s hard to imagine that there isn’t too much gas left in the coach Boeheim tank. After all, Boeheim was originally supposed to retire in 2018 before signing a new contract. Boeheim’s son, Buddy, played his first season with the Orange just months after his father’s original retirement timeline.

Amazon in Clay ramps up hiring as it prepares to ring in its first holiday season (PS; $; Moriarty)

Online retailing giant Amazon has quickly become one of the Syracuse area’s largest private employers.

Just four months after opening, the company’s distribution center in Clay — at 3.8 million square feet, one of the largest warehouses in the world — employs 2,500 full-time workers.

And that number will be going up to 3,000 by the time the holiday rush begins around Thanksgiving, said site leader Irfaan Hafeez.

“I think we’re going to have a very big footprint in Central New York,” he said.

The center is already a busy place. Every day, 300,000 products come into the facility and the same number go out. During the holiday season that runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas, that number will rise to 400,000, according to Hafeez.

In total, the facility holds more than 25 million products, but that number will rise, too. The center has a capacity for 40 million products.

"Q: Can SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry students play for SU
Mike:
No. Syracuse and SUNY-ESF are two different schools."

As I recall, an ESF student won a lawsuit because she didn't want to pay SU student fees. The end result was loss of great opportunities for ESF athletes.

I think it was. They were never enrolled in Syracuse University. They are part of the SUNY system.
